FiringSquad chats with UbiSoft's Marie-Sol Beaudry about their upcoming Nintendo Wii developed first person shooter Red Steel. You can check out the interview right here (http://www.firingsquad.com/news/newsarticle.asp?searchid=11001). Here is a snip:
FiringSquad: Some people might see Red Steel as nothing but a different kind of "light gun game". How is working with the Wii controller with the weapons different than the typical light gun title?

Marie-Sol Beaudry: Working with the Wii controller is different because we can really offer an immersive game, in a way it was not possible in a classic gun game. Because you have this feeling that what you are seeing on the screen is your arm, you are “in” the game. The moves you are doing are the ones in the game. This way we can be more precise than any other gun game.

The Wii controller also gives this opportunity to learn to master your moves. This brings this idea of becoming more efficient. In the story we are translating this by learning to be a modern samurai. In Red Steel, the game is to fight and have fun doing it like a classic gun game, but we are going further in the experience. We also add to the gun fight sword fight to give the players more diversity.

Launch titles are seldom anything special no matter how much they are hyped up ahead of time. The developers just don't have the time working with the final hardware that they need to optimize the title for the platform and the deadlines are killer because the game has to be on the shelves before the hardware does.

one word: Halo.

Anyways, I always assumed that you could move around like a normal FPS. Is this game "on tracks"? If so, that's a major dissapointment :(

What's wrong with light gun games?
House of the Dead & Point Blank FTW!

Marie-Sol Beaudry: Sony & Microsoft are more fighting again each other to have the number one console at the cutting edge of the technology. Nintendo is more focus on the gameplay & the fun. For Red Steel we will accordingly focus on delivering an action packed game & impressing with actions & situations rather than details.
in other words, dont expect any jaw dropping graphics.

but I actually think this loopks interesting and I'd love to play it. I think lightgun games a brilliant and yes I think this is off rails so that should add a FPS element to it as well.

I am cautious and skeptical of this game. It could come out and be the bee's knees, or it could totally tank. It sounds like the team has some really ambitious ideas. I'm curious to see how it plays myself.

One thing I keep coming back to though is that Wii is going to make everyone into a N00b. We won't be able to pick up the game and rock at it right away. That's going to be frustrating to a lot of gamers. I'm trying to keep an open mind about new control schemes.

I think your right in the sense that no one has used the Wii, but I don't think it will take more than 15 minutes for anyone to pick up on it with ease. The controller is too simple a design to be all that complex, which is good because thats what Nintendo was going for. A new, innovative way for gamers too play, and a reason for non-gamers to play.

Besides, how hard can "point, shoot" be? Pretty self explanitory, and the rest can be discovered through tutorial and gameplay.

Easy to play, difficult to master.

I hope Ubisoft nails it with this one, but I'm not excited about it yet.

I think the whole point of this system is that you can just pick up and play. My dad is going to be a lot more likely to pick up a controller that looks like a remote and try to shoot at my ass than pick up a controller that looks like a rediculously complicated tech boomerang.

It's been stated time and time again that this is an FPS and you can move around freely. The "light gun" remark comes from people comparing the shooting element to that of a light gun game.

Eh...this is going to be mediocre. It also seems like from those comments the sword thing was an afterthought...which is how it looked to me from the E3 trailer. Won't be bad, and probably fun for a playthrough...especially with the novelty of the Wii...but that'll wear thin quick.

Rental, at best.

Easy to play, difficult to master.

I don't see it being any more difficult to master than other intuitive game designs i.e. first person fighting in Riddick, blue sparks in Double Dash, army control in the Total War series, Guitar Hero, or web slinging in Spiderman 2. All of these concepts are unique to their respective games and are different from most things before, yet people still played and still mastered them all. I'll agree that we aren't talking about a different way to use a controller, but a different controller enitirely as well as new way to play games. That said, I still find it hard to believe it will be any more difficult than mastering Guitar Hero.

Super Mario Brothers, Super Mario World, Mario 64, Soul Calibur, Halo, Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved, Duck Hunt, Excitebike, F-Zero, Piliotwings, Piliotwings 64, Tetris, Super Mario Land, Warioware: Touched, Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, Super Dogeball Advance, Luigi's Mansion, Super Monkey Ball, Rouge Squadron 2, Raiden Project, Twisted Metal, SSX, Armored Core 2, Wipeout Pure, and Lumines, and that's just the games I liked/played.

What can we learn from this? Nintendo tends to have good games at launch.

I'd love it if this game ended up not sucking, but I'm not very optamistic.

Halo? Twisted Metal? Geometry Wars? Twisted metal?

Those represent Nintendo having good games at launch?

We will just have to wait and see if this game is worth it

I would hope that nintendo wouldn't let the game be released if it ends up being a game that makes their brand new system look bad. They need to make sure its ready and fun to play before it hits the shelves. If I get the Wii and buy this game with it and the controls suck well then I may think to myself that the XBOX 360 is looking mighty nice especially since we know the games simply wont measure up graphics wise. Now thats not really me talking but thats what a lot of people may think so I hope they help them to get it right before its available to buy.
