Right from the official EA Battlefield 2 website... (http://www.ea.com/official/battlefield/battlefield2/us/editorial.jsp?src=communityupdate_070506)
We are beginning the first phase of our 1.4 patch beta testing! This initial phase of testing will only include a small number of servers whose focus is to ensure stability in a live environment. At the completion of this phase we will be rapidly expanding the number of servers hosted to allow everyone an opportunity to review this latest patch.
I would like to stress that everyone who downloads the beta files should take the time to read the included text file so that you can properly safeguard your current BF2 install.
Thanks to Blues (http://bluesnews.com/) for the tip.
Anyone game for being a guinea pig?

With DICE software? You already are! I wouldn't touch their Beta software with a ten-foot barge pole.

Wouldn't touch that crap with a 10ft pole.
Huh, testing a BF2 patch before it is released? When did EA start doing that?

My friend bought BF2 and he says this server he joined had a message up that the server crashes randomly with 1.3, so if you're kicked just reconnect.
I laughed.
In all seriousness, though.. Is this the patch that adds the cheaper price?

Hey, heres some suggestions: how about a new map FOR FREE (edit- ohw wait, kust read the ful thing). Also, how about making Wake 2007 balanced? Like making it so the Chinese start losing tickets when the US has captured 3 bases. Putting the A-10 on the carrier would also work.

It'd be nice if they mentioned what the patch addresses.

Patch 1.4 will add new features to purchase... such as stability for $5, and fun for $20. Another subpatch for $100 will remove the stupid load-times on menus and make the ingame server browser good.

the a-10 wouldnt work because its a bomber only. and its slow. and theres a ton of anti-air on that map. it would be shot down fast. the j-10 jets would slaughter it.

Don't be daft. Nothing is ever going to make a Gamespy in-game browser usable, much less good.

It's a bait and switch. They're testing one patch, but they'll be releasing something else. That seal hasn't been opened yet.

I really don't understand how any games, never mind AAA titles, still use the Gamespy browser. I mean... it's really... really... bad... It was surpassed years ago by programs as simple as all-seeing-eye. Anyone in the business have any insight as to why it's still used?

The browser in bf2 is a special case. They had a falling out with gamespy shortly after release, so that code is never ever going to be fixed.

They're the only company working with developers to incorporate their browser into the game?
The other browsers do the opposite, work to incorporate the game into their browser.
The gamespy stuff could be great, but nobody a) goes to the effort to really tailor it to a specific game, or b) optimize it.

Say what you want, but despite it's flaws I like BF2. Sure, there are some issues, like the shitty game browser as has been mentioned, but the game is awesome. We'll see if Quakewars can take it away from me.

If I quote Paperghost (http://www.vitalsecurity.org) here and say:

Would that be wrong?

I don't like in game browsers. I've never seen one that worked right. I stopped playing TFC/TF1.5 because my brother said ASE didn't work anymore, and I'd have to switch to Steam.
I must say the day ASE sold to yahoo, while perhaps a good day for the ASE creators, was a bad day for me.
You're the first person I've ever heard say anything good about gamespy since Arcade was announced, so I'm going to have to take your word for it.

Yeah, that's me as well. The shitty game browser and the random crashes are what tunes me right up. There was a while when I didn't play medic anymore because if I was trying to throw a medkit at the same moment someone killed me, I'd crash every time.

I've had nothing but fun with BF2. Stop the whining already.
I tried 1.4 last night and had a lot of fun with the new map.
It has the same style of play as Karkand and it is well made.
Kudos to Dice for learning from their mistakes and being open to the community.
As far as Gamespy, yeah, they suck. I don't mind using their server list utility but I'm really sad the BF2 accounts are with them as well.
Hopefully for BF2142 Dice will stay clear of Gamespy for accounts.

Can you bind keys yet? That'd be neat eh, being able to actually bind keys to what you want?
Crazy, I know.

Umm, yeah, you've always been able to change the key assignments. Go to "options" and "controls".
I also don't understand why everyone complains. I love the game. Been playing it on and off for over a year now. That's AWESOME for me. Of course, I have mad flying skills, and a computer fast enough to get me into the maps first. :)

Bind crouch to left-shift.
I'll wait.

I agree with you on this one. If only they could work out some of the more frustrating issues (verifying client data? anyone know why this takes so damn long?!?!) it would be like buttah.
I am hoping that Quake Wars can knock Battlefield off it's throne, if only for the increased competition between DICE and id/Splash Damage.
Edit: Quake Wars delayed until 2007 for teh lose. :(
