I'm a big fan of cover songs, and watching how other artist add their own interpretation. I thought it would be cool to start a thread where others can share some of their favorite covers.

You have the Johnny Cash hurt up there but not the David Bowie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCMLwbdSrTY) one? Blasphemy! You did happen to pick mad world so all is forgiven.
Here are some fun covers I enjoy...

Also there's the legendary (locally) Cliff Erickson (http://www.clifferickson.com/). He plays a MEAN TWELVE and covers everything under the sun that's classic rock related. Hell I even got to dance on stage with him when I wore one of those http://a4.l3-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/78/d8934a4a6dccee3bd981b634b3e58c98/m.gif to a show and he decided to tune his guitar to it, then played dueling banjos while I danced Two Fisted with white russians. Good times!
For more than 30 years, Cliff has had a sustaining entertaining career. Cliff has traveled as a solo performer from his hometown of Port Huron, Michigan to venues all over the world. Though his home base is the Detroit, Michigan area, Cliff has entertained on Cruise Ships in the Greek Isles and currently performs at universities, clubs and conventions across the United States and Canada.
His charismatic stage presence sets him apart from other performers and his ability to capture an audience has been a welcome addition to the performances of headliners such as Ringo Starr, Kenny Rogers, Jim Carrey and the Beach Boys, among others.
Cliff has received acclaim not only from his fans, but has received the award of "Consummate Entertainer of the Year" by Orbit Magazine and The Vietnam Veterans Appreciation Award.
Cliff has two albums released by Accurate Records, and is currently working on his third album.

RE: Famous Blue Raincoat
That's by far my favorite Cohen song sung by Cohen. I haven't listened to your link, yet, but I'll probably like it as well.
If you're talking Cohen covers you are required BY LAW to link Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah version. (no time right now to grab a link)

Not sure if that counts a cover as much as just a different version of a Blues classic, but I like their version best.

Gotta say Cash's version of Hurt is one of my faves of all times. In different realm of music I always liked Leaving on a Jet Plane by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. Punk/pop rock of 90s- early 00s that did nothing but covers.

No problem. The Bowie one instantly popped into my mind because I was there. Not many good covers out there actually. If I can get a decent recording of my buddy, he could easily cover anything by Robert Plant or John Anderson.

Call me crazy, but I'll take UB40 + Chrissie Hynde over Sonny & Cher. Really can't beat The Pretenders.

Might even like that more than the Radiohead version...
Couple of solid covers from Alex Parks:

and to bring it full circle, Coldplay doing a cover of a Pretenders song:

I'm totally down with this thread. The older I get, the more I find myself enjoying covers. It's really hard to pear down a list small enough to post. I left out a ton and still feel like I went overboard.
Here's a few of my favs:

It amazes me how some songs seam to have this quality about them that produces some really excellent covers. Songs like "Use Somebody" or "Don't Stop Believin'" can't seam to be done wrong, as long as the performer is competent of course.

This has been really awesome to read/listen to.
Major props to see colon for posting Trent Reznor and co. doing the Warm Leatherette cover. The original was weird and great, the cover is effing amazing.
Dunno if there are any Peter Gabriel fans here, but the band Coal Chamber did an interesting cover of his Shock the Monkey that grew on me:
GMk-8pmTpgU
The Finnish metal band Suburban Tribe also did a cover of it I enjoy:

Yeah, I found that one on accident one day looking at some Peter Murphy stuff. His voice is awesome. I was embarrassed that I hadn't heard it yet, because it's from 2006 (found it in 2009 i think), and had gone through a spat of Warm Leatherette remix searching only a few months earlier.
The other thing that's crazy about covers is that some are as fantastic as you'd imagine, like the Warm Leatherette cover. All of the people in that room are accomplished in their own right, and it comes together perfectly. I won't call anyone out for sucking, but I think we can all think of a few covers by accomplished musicians that came out wrong. What's really weird, and this holds true for me and the 7000 dying rats cover of Jock-O-Rama is that, while I really enjoy that cover, I've never found anything else from them that I've found even listen-able.

Maybe not technically a cover, since it's still Jonathon Coulton, but it is performed by a different vocalist:

Still Alive performed by Sara Quin from Tegan & Sara. I <3 me some Tegan & Sara.

Anyone else use Second Hand Songs (http://www.secondhandsongs.com/)? I go there almost daily and check out obscure covers. It also surprises me when I come across a song that was a hit which I didn't realise was a cover.
Anyway. I absolutely love this cover of House of the Rising Sun.

heh My personal inclination to Blues-rock may have led me to pick the versions that are heavier on that aspect. Awesome to see one song get reinterpreted so much though, in so many ways. Way too many versions for one post.
