View Full Version : Warhawk Q&A

IGN has a Q&A (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/716/716051p1.html) with Incognito (http://www.incognitostudio.com/) about their PS3 game, Warhawk.
Upton: The environment we showed at E3 is an island military base off the coast of the main continent; about 5% of the total play space. In addition to the island, we'll have a variety of distinct regions and cities created to specifically provide a playground for the Warhawk. For example, our mountain area has these huge towering peaks and deep, deep valleys. We wanted to give the player lots of terrain to fly around through - it's a rush that you don't get from other aerial action games.
There is some new info to be gleaned from the interview as well as some new screenshots. Unfortunately, Incognito is being quite tight lipped about the game for now.
I don't know if this is a mistake, but you can't see the shots in the actual article in a larger size. Kind of upsetting as these new screens look to show off some improved graphics and details.

At least he didn't accidentally link to something embarrasing, like furrry porn. Anywho, here's the link (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/716/716051p1.html) for those who are lazy.

It looks like it might be a good game.

Those shots look plenty big to me. The textures look nice, but the smoke effects seem to lag behind in quality. Not that it matters, since all combat flight sims have gone in the same gameplay direction since Crimson Skies.

I wasn't all that interested in this game before, but upon closer inspection it seems pretty sweet sounding.

It sounds to me like that StarFox game where you can run around on foot. Or that Rouge Squadron game where you can run around on foot. In fact, I don't know if there is a game that ever got great flying and great on-foot sequences done right together. :(

http://www.us.playstation.com/Content/OGS/GMID-004/Site/ has some very impressive video footage as well. The second video in particular. The last two are a good glimpse into the development.

Warhawk looks kinda interesting, but what's going on with Lair? There's no PR basically, and they seem to release one trailer a year.

Theres a post on ps3.ign.coms messageboards from Jeremy Dunham asking for questions to ask the developers of Warhawk and Lair. The Warhawk Q&A was just posted, so I would assume Lair is coming up.

Played this too, but I was totally unimpressed. The sort of "effortless" feel of just tilting the controller to fly was nice, but... that was about it. It looked pretty good, but no better than 360's current offerings. Crimson skies felt tighter and generally more fun. Not saying it's anything terrible, but it appears to be the only sony launch title with decent buzz and I didn't think it was anything special.

But it would have been awesome if he had.
Speaking of large outdoor enviroments to fly around in, anyone ever play Terminal Velocity on the PC? I'm beginning to wonder if Warhawk will have the same type of planet-wide flight feel to it. Or maybe no one wants to make games THAT large again?
I'm still interested in this game, but less-so after seeing the Mercenary-wannaba run around on the ground BS.
Warhawk was about epic sky battles. It had NOTHING to do with running around clumsily on the ground with some sort of "sandbox bullshit" gameplay that some marketing jerk or producer came up with "because the kids dig sandbox".

I'm not at all behind this new Warhawk, and this is from a kid who is/was 100% devoted to every SingleTrac/Inog project ever made. Even Streak and Rogue Trip.
The on foot idea is just stupid and serves to make the game unfocused, and the tilt control is just terrible for a Warhawk game. For a game like Pilotwings, in which the point of the game is to lose yourself in the whimsy of flight, it's a perfect idea. But for fora shooter/flight sim I want to CONTROL the plane, not BE the plane. Inevitably precision of control is goign to be taken away from the gamer yet again, like they did with analog sticks, and gams are going to default to requireing the gamer to be less precise to compensate. Just like they did in the switch to analog. Then challenge and skill will once again be removed from the videogame equation and gamers will continue to complain that games are boring without realizing why.

Have you played this new Warhawk? Shouldn't you wait to see how it plays before you slam it?

I dont think they should have done the ground combat parts at all. The flying looked very interesting, but the ground stuff.. wow, that looked pretty terrible.

Good point. I doubt the US airforce will change all their fighter controls to emulate the PS3 controller anytime soon.
Flightsticks and wheels have been used for years. Not sure I've heard of an actual plane using a tilt controller. Now that would be funny. Maybe in the Movie Airplane III :)
Ted Striker: My orders came through. My squadron ships out tomorrow. We're bombing the storage depots at Daiquiri at 1800 hours. We're coming in from the north, below their radar.
Elaine Dickinson: When will you be back?
Ted Striker: I can't tell you that. It's classified.
Rumack: You'd better tell the Captain we've got to land as soon as we can. This woman has to be gotten to a hospital.
Elaine Dickinson: A hospital? What is it?
Rumack: It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.
