As the mighty Justin suggested in an earlier news post tonight, Episode 18 (http://www.evilavatarradio.com/audio/EAR.Episode18.AmyJoJohnson.mp3) of the Evil Avatar Radio (http://www.evilavatarradio.com) podcast is now available for your listenage. We get down and dirty talking about Power Rangers and thecrazyd and such. Also, Justin does a really strange dance, but you can't really tell, since it's radio. Listen, what do you expect?
Give it a listen, and the full might and glory of the EvAv podcast will be back for recording a new live episode one week from tonight with a great guest interview to boot! Also, we'll be doing a roundtable and posting it next week, so stay tuned for that. Here at Evil Avatar Radio, we never rest in our constant pursuit of audio love with a high potential to give you entertainment. Except this week, I guess, since we're not recording the show. Um... I need to go.
And....downloading. I can finally stop reading this book for lack of anything else to do on a Friday night. You have saved my Friday....this time.

What book?
Also, this is really my fave episode so far, which I guess every new episode should be. I have a lot of fun, though.
Reading Howard's End by E.M. Forster. Going through this phase where I'm reading a good deal of this type of novel. Just finished Emma a couple nights back.
Really enjoying the episode thus-far. Finally had a Friday night off and was all jazzed to call in and heckle, but alas.

Awww, sorry, Blue. hopefully soon!
Emma? As in Jane Austen's Emma? What'd you think? Only Jane Austen I've read is Sense and Sensibility, but I was surprised by how much I disliked it.
I wish I'd be reading more novels this summer, but all my heavy reading has been taken up by film theory for my directed study, so I need to wash that down with lots of comic reading.
Yeah, Jane Austen. Emma was a grand "okay" to me. I didn't dislike it at all but I felt really underwhelmed by it at the same time. There always seemed to be a self-barrier that I couldn't get through and I always felt like I had to read versus really wanting to read. I'm going to give Pride and Prejudice a go next to see how that goes.
East of Eden is really high up on my list of books that I want to read soon despite Oprah's need to put a little sticker on the front cover of it. The opening paragraphs to that book are amazing.

Blue, have you read A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers, by chance? It's not a classic by any means, but I would love to hear what you think.
My problem with Sense and Sensibility is the ridiculous nature of love that Austen puts forward as normal and right. I'm sure it's what she lived, but I can't stomach the thought that young girls reading this might follow the same sorts of beliefs.

I'm with you on how Austen fronts love. While I'll admit that a part of me would rather young girls read her than watch, say, that Sweet 16 crap on MTV (or, heck, even use myspace), it's a very fine line and I'm often curious as to how Austen is generally required reading in school and said subject is often brushed over. Was at least when I was in class.
And I actually haven't gotten around to Eggers, despite all of my friends pushing it on me. Strangely enough, the title put me off to it because it seemed like a wanna-be art book for the sake of being a wanna be art book. The meat is in the title kind of thing, you know? I'll have to hit up the library or B&N tomorrow and see if I can hunt it down. Would be a nice change of pace after all of this English countryside business I'm shoveling in.

Good damn point on the MTV thing. Also, Amanda's a HUGE Austen fan. that's one of the few things we completely disagree on. Don't tell her I said anything!

Let me know what you think if you get a hold of it. If you hate post-modern-y, existentialist stuff, you might be willing to write it off as self-obsessed and masturbatory, but I think it rocks hardcore.

Phil, just thought I'd mention this... I just got done reading that (the copy that Amanda gave to Jackie for graduation, no less) and I have to say... two thumbs up. And I was worried about how it ended... and I shouldn't have been. The ending was mindbendingly appropriate. Now I want to read And You Shall Know Our Velocity.

The Grapes of Wrath is something everyone should read, in my opinion. I mean, it's an American classic, no doubt. I've read it three times.
I also like Tortilla Flat, if we're talkin' Steinbeck.

You guys should take a trip down to Best Buy / Circuit City and compare BluRay and HD-DVD to regular DVD. It would be great to hear what you guys think of the quality - god knows I have plenty of thoughts on it!!

Grapes of Wrath is incredible. Easily in my top ten. Tortilla Flat was okay - just didn't give me the "charge" that Wrath did while reading, but not a bad book by any means. And, not to be too terribly obvious: Of Mice and Men is amazing. I know people generally salivate over it, but it's genuinely one of those books I just love.

I tried reading A Heartbreaking Work Of Staggering Genius but just couldn't get into it. Not enough pictures :)
I loved all of the little things Eggers did just on the copyright page alone but never got much further than the introduction/preface/disclaimer bits. I had it out from the library though and had to bring it back before I could give it a good sit-down read. Ah well. I'll get it again in a bit when I've rebooted my reading cortex.
I am just starting into Jpod by Coupland and it's pretty good so far. I've never really read a Coupland book before, so this should be fun. My only quibble with the book so far is that the main character's favourite game is the PS1 version of Chrono Trigger, not the SNES version. Heretic.

Man....I'm not done with the podcast yet, but wow, it's amazing. You have to realize, for about 3 weeks ago I was watching power rangers (originals baby) on youtube. My friend actually met Jason David Frank (Tommy, the greatest ranger ever), because he came to his job to teach the little kids karate. Man is a 6th degree black belt in Karate.

Have you guys read Consider the Lobster, by David Foster Wallace? It's a collection of essays for various magazines, on a variety of topics, from porn expos to Dostoevsky. The title essay is on the Rockland Lobster Festival, and would give you a bit of insight into Kelegacy's particular brand of brain damage. The centerpiece is an extended rumination on Garner's American Usage, which is intelligent, absurd, and witty, often simultaneously.

It's a big added chapter in the middle that's completely different from the rest of the book, so you'd know if it's missing. And it totally changes the whole book in interesting ways. If I can find my copy (read: if I don't have it loaned out to someone) I can send it to you for reading that specifically.

I think the book's worth it just for the development of the skateboard game by the main characters. The other stuff is just icing on the cake. I don't know if I'd recommend running out and buying it hardcover, but get it from the lieberry and read it in a day or two.
Since this thread is already all over the place, I just have to say that I'm finally watching the 'new' Filter on G4 and it sucks. Why on God's green and verdant Earth is there a top 20 show on people we love to hate on G-f'in-4? And why are the Suicide Girls the Icons on the upcoming show of the same name? At 9pm of all times. Yeesh. Sure, they do have a tenuous gaming connection, but...
Ok. I got that off my chest. Go back to whatever you were talking about before.

You know, I've been one of the few people around here who actually likes G4 some of the time, and even I have to say that the newest revamp of Attack of the Show is just unbearable. Even when they've got guys I love on the show, I find it hard to pay attention or care. X-Play is about all I can watch consistently on that channel now (and even that's as back and forth in quality as always, but still fun and true to its roots at least).

I hear ya, Kef. I only get to watch G4 when I'm visiting the in-laws, so my exposure to the drek isn't terribly high. Plus we here in Canuckistan get Leo LaPorte and co. on Call For Help and a few other actual techy-type shows that are holdovers from the old Tech TV days and are spared the Star Trek and Drift Racing shows. I do like X-Play and Reviews on the Run and Electric Playground, but the other shows like Filter (which used to be somewhat watchable) and Icons (which was amazing...until the newest revamp) are just disappointing.
I'd like to get digital TV to get Tech/G4 but everytime I watch it I get a bit more disheartened.

In my mind, Tommy is the mainstream gamer in every respect. Anything with nuance or lacking a roman numeral after its name is almost automatically panned by him, usually raising it higher in my eyes :)
Victor tends to speak more from my point of view. He's a gamer who can appreciate something that is 'kiddie' for being a fun game regardless of the lack of gore and seems to love the games that are outside the box.
I think Tommy still does reviews for Reviews on the Run but doesn't have much to do in front of the camera on EP anymore.

I like Tommy, because he's got differing opinions on shit. I understand that there are people out there with his mindset, so it's interesting to hear (despite how much I totally disagree with him most of the time). And the odd time too, I actually end up being on his side instead of Victors.

I'd be cool with him having differing opinions if he didn't act like such a dipshit when he presents his. He shoves them down Victor's throat like they're the God-given, obvious truth. It's annoying, whether I agree or disagree with him.
