How the FUCK do Diamond tools wear out? Also, looks incredible. Nice work!!!

http://i.imgur.com/0uYVo.png

Now I just need to find a good Terraria server that isn't all dug out. I couldn't stand walking into a minecraft public server and being handed tons of free stuff ect.

edit: btw that texture pack is very nice. Was worth your friend's bitching.

Diamond tools wear out rather quickly when you're hollowing out mountains. Which is what I did here. According to the ingame stats, i've gone through 22 diamond picks since the patch that tracks that kind of stuff.

The texture pack in the first few pictures is called "Visibility (43)". It's actually what I prefer using, and what i'm going to continue to use.

The texture pack in the last few pictures is called "Nature" and I think it's a little bit better than default.

To me the completely flat, blocky look compliments minecraft the best so I prefer my Visibility texture. Also it makes it far easier to spot monsters because it colors them insanely brightly.

This game needs some kind of alternate lay mode,
where it will let me only lay along the same horizontal
plane and not accidentally stack vertically. That would
make laying in air sooo much easier.

Wow that looks great, especially at night. How much time have you spent so far?

Syl

On this particular building? Something probably approaching 2-3 full days of work. Between hollowing out the mountain, getting and molding the sand/smooth stone, and then mining expeditions for the crazy amount of diamonds i've gone through.

It got a lot easier when I finally finished the tree farm on the bottom floor, so I didn't have to make the trip back to Syltek, my previous overly large and time consuming building.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/Sylaran/Game%20Screens/Minecraft058.jpg
It actually stretches fairly down into the ground below the pyramid, and the pyramid contains a substantial cactus, reed and wheat farm. The place is entirely self-sustaining except that I mined the area underneath it so completely that I had to migrate to a new area. Also it predates the Lapis patch.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/Sylaran/Game%20Screens/Minecraft054.jpg

I've been playing on this server for a few months, i don't know how much time i've spent on it total but it's something crazy. I know i've easily gone through multiple stacks of diamonds, not to mention absolutely unbelivable numbers of other precious materials. The stuff that other people built on the server is just as impressive, if not more impressive.

Are you playing online or singleplayer?

I never would have had the drive I have to build if i was only playing the game singleplayer.

Online (SMP), just... Just wandering around the server, seeing what other people have built. It makes you want to outdue them. Not really to prove that you are better, but simply because it shows you what can be done. I would have hated this game singleplayer, but being online and being able to show off my creations to other people, to be able to wander the server and come across something incredibly impressive that someone else built.

To me, that is minecraft. An endless outlet for creativity that can be shown in a scale that the real world cannot make possible.

Or something.

I'm playing single player survival, for now. I want to learn the mechanics a little more before I move onto a mp server; I mean just discovered redstone last night! Once summer break starts (I teach) I'll have some more time and I plan on looking for a good smp server.

I had actually bought this about a year ago and just didn't get it. When I finished playing Portal 2 last week, I was looking for something new to play and decided to give it a another shot. With the help of the online tutorials I really started getting into it and now I can't stop playing!

I generally don't like pure sandbox games, but I love open-ended games. I was one of those guys that played Morrowind for months while simply ignoring the main quest. The tight Minecrat day-night cycle combined with a good risk-reward ratio feels like that kind of game play and is causing me to enjoy it. Plus it kind of reminds me of a mish-mash between Ultima Underworld and Sim City, imo from the heyday of PC gaming, so there's a bit of a nostalgia factor there, too.

If a couple of you new guys (or vets) are looking for a relaxed SMP server, I host one 24/7.

It's a survival server with an emphasis on building. We don't PvP, grief, steal etc.

Every time I try and recruit people from the official forums it's usually a pre-teen looking to set things on fire. (Which isn't an option)

Just a small group of guys (5-7) that do some co-op building.

If you're interested you can check us out @ slccm.com/mcforum/

If i wasn't so heavily invested in our own SMP server (which is where these pictures came from) then I'd probably be interested in joining another. However i expect this server, which has probably had thousands of man-hours invested in it, will be around for a very long time.

Aside from the obvious road structure that you can see in those pictures, there is also an underground railroad structure that crosses most of the maps. We're working on making railroad stations for it now.

Looking forward to this coming to the 360. I actually bought the indie Fortresscraft game on XBIG, but it's a bit barebones compared to the real thing. Plus, you have to lock down your world or trolls just waltz in, screw up a bunch of stuff, set some bonds, and then laugh all the way to the exit. Losers.

I did a massive project last night while doing a marathon of season 3 of breaking bad. It was simply a road project, so it wasn't that important unless you're on the server, but here it is anyway.

It's almost impossible to show the size of just the portion I built last night with these shots, but according to the ingame stat page - it's roughly 1.5 kilometers long from my front door to townton.

Leaving my place:

When in townton, make sure you go into the house that's called "Noam Chomsky's Island Resort" or similar, and head down into the hatch into the basement.

There is a minecart down there. Trust me, it's worth the journey.

This is an aerial view, the "mountain" is that rather sharp edge against the water right above the huge cobble sky sculpture.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/Sylaran/Game%20Screens/Minecraft108.jpg
That is an automated reed collecting machine. An automated minecart goes up and down the track to the side, triggering blocks that move the pistons and cut off the top half of the reeds, which fall into the water and then slowly move to the collection tray. If you only remove the top half of a reed, it stays in place and continues growing - therefore you can set this thing up once and idle there all night long and keep collecting reeds indefinitely.

Do you have any other examples of people making similar creative in-game mechanisms?

I got back into Minecraft a little over the weekend. My in-laws started a new server so I created my own little cliff-side villa. It's not much but I'm hoping to get back into it a little bit.

A man was hit by a cab in the street. He was brought to the hospital. His wife who was standing

up by his bed, said to the doctor: "I think that he is very ill." "I am afraid that he is

dead."said the doctor,Hearing this, the man moved his head and said: "I'm not dead. I'm still

alive." "Be quiet, "said the wife. "the doctor knows better than you!"
Just then a voice called from outside the door, "If you do, I won't go."

Please let it be known, that sometimes when I have a project idea.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/Sylaran/Game%20Screens/Minecraft122.jpg
It's not the prettiest yet, but according to ingame stats that's over 3,200 smoothstone bricks, over 1000 stone stairs. I've used almost 20 stacks of coal for the ovens.
So tired.

I'm planning on building other buildings ontop of that courtyard and plateau, i also have plans that extend into the mountains in the background. Which i'm not going to develop nearly as much as the main plateau in order to keep the natural beauty.

I don't have a name for this place yet, but damn is it going to be good looking when i'm done.
