I remember people speculating about this even before the movie was officially announced. I wonder if it'll just be a cameo or something more...it wouldn't make sense to turn him into a big character.

Orlando Bloom's Legolas from Lord of the Rings has been confirmed for Peter Jackson's upcoming Hobbit film.

Orlando Bloom's portrayal of Legolas in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films had fans scrambling to buy their own light leather armor and learn how to use a bow and arrow. In a move sure to anger the most hardcore of J. R. R. Tolkien's followers, the golden haired member of the Fellowship will return in Jackson's first Hobbit film.

Jackson shared the reveal on his Facebook page. "Ten years ago, Orlando Bloom created an iconic character with his portrayal of Legolas," he wrote. "I'm excited to announce today that we'll be revisiting Middle Earth with him once more. I'm thrilled to be working with Orlando again. Funny thing is, I look older-and he doesn't! I guess that's why he makes such a wonderful elf."

Great, right? Not for everyone. Legolas doesn't actually appear in the Hobbit book, prompting some responses on Jackson's Facebook page such as: "But Legolas wasn't even mentioned in the book, only his father was and even then the name wasn't used."

Exactly how Jackson will incorporate Legolas isn't yet known. Jackson is presumably creating some kind of bridge between The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, though The Hobbit takes place 60 years before the Lord of the Rings trilogy (edit: or just giving Legolas a cameo).

Bloom joins other Lord of the Rings cast members such as Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins, Andy Serkis as Gollum, and Ian McKellen as Gandalf. The first Hobbit film of two is shooting now and scheduled for release in 2012.

I'm sure he'll play Legolas. Legolas was alive then. In Tolkien's world, Elves life forever unless they give up their immortality... or die... wait a second.

Two Hobbit movies? What is it going to be shire > rivendell and then rivendell > lonely mtn? That's going to make the first movie pretty boring.

Two Hobbit movies???

Ok, apart from that issue, maybe Legolas could show up at the end when the Elf armies are arrayed against the Dwarves for a share of the gold? That would be a mere cameo. Same with Frodo, he has no part in the Hobbit, but a cameo would be nice.

And who's playing Bilbo anyway? Shame that the original actor couldn't possibly do it, Ian Holmes, as he's too old, or is he doing it? Fantastic actor.

The riddles battle is one of my favorite scenes in any narrative, can't wait to see it, and to see if they use them all.

Ian Holmes is not reprising his roled due to choice on Peter Jackson's behalf, I believe. I think they should have stuck with him. They chose some guy from the British version of the office.

It will be in two parts, but no one seems to know if the two parts will comprise the book or if one will lead into Lord of the Rings.

Lastly, I thought the Hobbit took part about 50 years before Lord of the Rings, so why would Frodo be in it? Hobbits have different lifespans, but I think they typically live around a hundred years. Some a little longer.

Ian Holmes is simply too old. To do his "young Bilbo" scene for LOTR, they actually glued his skin back on his head to give him something like a temporary face-lift, for the scene where he finds the ring. I mean, he was born in 1931 >_> Makes him 80 this year. He might not even life long enough to see the movie in theatres <_<

I can hardly fathom how there's enough material to do two movies. Maybe Jackson is planning to sneak in some Tom Bombadil? >_> Maybe the first movie ends with Bilbo escaping Gollum's cave with the ring in hand. If they did a full riddle scene, that would take a good 20 minutes or so.

Very good point indeed. Bilbo's 111 in LOTR. Maybe Elijah Wood will play the part of Frodo's father in the story, who knows.

I could see it being two movies, with the second one ending in Rivertown (I think it was called). There was a lot of stuff. Fighting goblins/orcs in the Misty Mountains, meeting the Bear-shifter dude, and the Battle of the Five Armies in the end. Plus, before that Smaug wrecking all sorts of shit. I could see it, but ultimately, I feel like it's an effort to nickel and dime us. If they make the first book into two parts, I'd be okay with that. But if they do a prequel film leading into LOTR, I'd be kinda bummed.

Oh. Arther Dent from the last Hitchhiker's Guide movie. He should fit the role pretty well.

They've got hobbits and dwarfs. You'd think the minorities would be happy but Noooooo MiddleEarth Action had to go and force an no-talent Elf in the script.

The probably wanted a familar face to take the edge off the elves acting like bad guys. I predict he either saves them from the spiders or frees them from the elf jail.

I believe I read somewhere that Elijah/Frodo's role is more or less a narrator - he's reading or recounting Bilbo's journals on his trip with the Dwarves.

That's cool. It'd give a little bit extra continuity to the series. Look forward to it, especially with Jackson at the helm.

Ian Holmes plays Bilbo as he's older. They could do a flashback scene. Most of the original cast is back. Details: http://www.monstersandcritics.com/movies/news/article_1642460.php/The-Hobbit-movies-official-titles-and-release-dates-announced
