Computer & Video Games (http://www.computerandvideogames.com) has published a preview of the latest game in the Turok series, simply called Turok (although it's a working title only).

You can read the full preview here (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=142135).

The hero is no longer a Native American, but a super-hard US Commando called John Turok. He's accompanied into the prehistoric jungle by an equally angry-looking soldier, which suggests that the game could feature some co-op or squad-based gameplay. Although Turok still uses stealthy weapons like the bow and arrow and a nasty-looking combat knife, this FPS is anything but stealth-based - the E3 demo was an exercise in relentless carnage. Developer Propaganda Games is aiming to top the original game for extreme weapons, gore and unbelievable explosions - a task that will take some doing.

Of course, all this is secondary to what Turok is really famous for, and that's fighting gigantic, mutant dinosaurs.

One of the major new features is that you won't just be battling dinosaurs, but also figuring out ways to use them to your advantage. This could involve leading a hungry T-Rex into a pack of terrified enemy soldiers, or possibly using a Triceratops to smash through barricades.
This is going to have to be supremely brilliant to make up for the last Turok game. Going by the preview, I'm not convinced - it all sounds a little meh to me.

Turok always gave me motion sickness. It's the only game that did that.

The last Turok game made me sick, but it had nothing to do with motion! :(

Turok is one of those premises that sounds like it can't fail (dinosaurs! that you get to blow the fuck up with impossibly powerful guns!) and yet just wasn't ever any fun for me.

This is probably the most humorous game ever. Part of me hopes that is the intent.

I think if they took this game, liberally applied some Monty Python-esque humor to it, and took being cliche in stride, you could have a real winner.

Unfortunately, it probably takes itself entirely too seriously. I bet the main character's buddy dies to a dinosaur in a tragic 15 minute cutscene and then we're knee deep in a story of, love, revenge and asskicking.

The potential for franchise reinvention is limitless. Simply take a long defunct video game title, add John in front to create the name of the "super-hard US Commando" protagonist and the rest writes itself.

Why even call it Turok if it's not going to tap the Turok comic mythos? They should just ditch the horrible Turok game stigma and make it an original property.

Cause i am Turok!
Maybe there's a mix up between this and Prey, so they got the characters all mixed up?

Wasn't a bad shirt design tho, with the strip in the back shoulder. Fog was neat in the room. :P

I for one think it's fine to rebrand the name. I've said it before...Turok the comic went through a few incarnations itself so I have no trouble with this at all. I guess all you people complaining must really hate the Ultimate books that Marvel is doing....

EXACTLY!!

Publishers are afraid to take a chance on anything new and its better to attach your game to some smelly turd, because at least people will talk about it... we are... ;)

My sole reason for playing Turok is to see CRAZY ASS WEAPONS, fricken dinosaurs with fricken lasers and GREEN FOG!

Miss one of these and it's no sale for me. :)

Turok was just one of those games where it was a great stand-alone game, but then as soon as they tried to franchise it it became complete crap.

I must be one of the very few people who enjoyed the game on XBox. I loved zooming in on dinos, shooting them with poison arrows and watching them puke to death. :) I was a new XB owner when I picked it up and was very impressed by the heat shimmer from the rocket launcher firing.

I enjoyed it. Best shooter out there? Nope but fun game anyway.

HAHAHA! That's exactly what I clicked in here to post.

Everytime a new generation of console comes around the first and only "next gen" thing I want to see are how good the dinosaurs look and whether or not they can scare the pants off me.

There's no reason an FPS game where you fight giant scary dinosaurs in a jungle shouldn't be a system seller.

He can't have a red name so he's going with the next best thing?

I loved Turok 1 and 2. Well, 1 more than 2, but I liked Turok 2. Cerebral Bore FTW!!!!

Everythign after that sucked, although Evolution was fun in the sick weapons and deaths sort of way.

This new Turok does not sound good.

I liked the first 2 Turok games. That's it. They went downhill from there trying to be more than it was. This one is just the same, in fact, it could be any other game than a Turok game and be acceptable. But as a Turok game, it has NOTHING from the Turok mythology except dinosaurs, guns, and the name Turok. This game is nothing but fuckjuice as far as I'm concerned.

Alright, i'm calling you out. What exactly is the storyline of the first game.
Requirements:
Include every boss and scene in the story...make sure you involve the jeep boss. I'm sure he's a very important character.

It's like they have a bet to see if they can make a game WORSE than the preceeding ones.

LOL, seriously. The original Turok's "story" was on par with a second-rate NES title. Hell, the original Castlevania had more story that Turok.

Didn't Turok for N64 come with a comic or something?

It's amazing everyone is disregarding this game already because it's not the same character as the original.

Remember the roots of Turok...It was a comic. It had several changes to it's storyline. That's a normal thing that happens when a franchise gets stagnant. So he's no longer a native american, so what? Gameplaywise, you're still gonna be shooting dinos.

What's wrong with rebranding/reimaging the game? I've said this before, it's like the Ultimate books that Marvel are doing. And I think they're great..and storywise they changed a lot of things with the characters. This being a game that will be new to a lot of people should be given a chance. I can't wait to play a new fps with dinos in it.

From wikipedia: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turok)The Western Publishing version of Turok was a pre-Columbian Native American who, along with his brother, Andar, wound up trapped in an isolated valley populated by dinosaurs, which they called honkers. The original stories were fairly formulaic, often involving Turok and Andar looking for a way out of the valley.

When the character appeared in Valiant Comics, the concept and setting were altered slightly. Turok and his brother were now 18th century Native Americans. The isolated valley became Lost Land - a cosmic anomaly where time moved in a self-contained loop (which meant that while millions of years passed outside of it, inside it, time barely moved at all). Unity, a line-wide Valiant Comics crossover, altered the concept even further. The crossover's main villain, a psychotic, super-powered being known as Mothergod used the Lost Land as the base of operations. She outfitted the dinosaurs with intelligence-boosting implants, turning them into "bionisaurs". In the aftermath of the final battle between Mothergod and Valiant Universe heroes, the Lost Land began to disappear. Turok wound up tossed into the jungles of then present-day Columbia. Andar landed in parts unknown. Unfortunately for Turok, a group of bionisaurs made it to Earth along with him. Since then, he became a ruthless bionisaur hunter.

When Acclaim purchased Valiant, Turok was changed yet again. This time, he was re-imagined by writer Fabian Nicieza and artist Rafael Kayanan as a young Native American boy from a long line of bionisaur hunters (where bionisaurs came from was never explained).

edit: And the storyline to the original game? His name wasn't even Turok to begin with. Talk about straying from the character.

In Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, the player controls Tal Set (a Turok, the Western Indian Guardians of the Lost Land). Tal Set must stop an evil cyborg, "The Campaigner", from conquering the Lost Lands.
