Do you have something rare or just fun you would like to share? It could be music, a signed baseball bat, or just something unique that you have a fond memory of. Lately more and more of us are discussing the golden age of gaming and how great the good old days were. Take some pictures or video of your collection and share it with the rest of the site.

I'll start off this thread with an original Zaxxon mini-cabinet. (Gerstmann eat your heart out) Unearthed and one of the few toys that survived those days, it still works perfectly and by some miracle I didn't leave batteries in it.

That's an awesome piece! I used to have a TON of those little mini-cabs: Pac Man, Galaga, Donkey Kong, as well as tons of other handhelds. Some of them are probably still in storage somewhere at my parents house; I should really go on an expedition and see what I can dig out.

Ok, it's not much, but this is an OLD handheld game that I keep in my office because of all the memories I have from it:

It's one of the earliest consumer-level number guessing electronic games (from 1977). You had to figure out a random 5 digit number in a limited number of guesses. Lord only knows how many miles of roadtrips this thing got me through. :)

Not quite, but I DID learn to make a papercraft PacMan when I was in second grade and used to make it run around my desk eating up little paper balls. In fact, I wonder if I can still remember how to make those...

There are 6 main attractions in the theme park, they must be solved in a linear order, and before you can claim your prize you must fight 1 of 3 final bosses (your choice, luckily). Each attraction is based on a horror B-movie produced by the theme park's owner, Michael Reynolds. So for each attraction, you get a different story that unfolds as you explore the stage, and the mood is different between the stages, too. In fact, you get to assume diffferent roles in some of these stages, literally putting you right in the lead character's skin, including what appears to be an adult version of Toy Story (wink, wink). This shows off the game engine's adaptability to create an entirely different game and the developer's imagination. Some stages are also set up so you need to solve it differently than what you learned to solve the previous stage. The game's developer really went out of their way to make this a varied experience that's always fun. The music is also fitting and create the appropriate mood for each stage.

Battle is inevitable as most stages end with a boss fight, and while exploring, you are more than likely to encounter some grotesque creatures that would love to inflict bodily harm on you. The battle system is pretty straightforward, and much easier than what has evolved in the Resident Evil series. I think those who complained about it were expecting something they are used to and did not give the game's system a fair chance. This game has a steep learning curve, which you probably won't get 100% until stage 3, and many of these negative game reviewers probably did not even manage to clear the first stage. I spent the first night working on the first stage (the in-game tutorial isn't the greatest, thank goodness for Internet FAQs) while learning the ropes. By the 2nd and 3rd night the game becomes extremely addictive as the game's controls become second nature. You'll probably want to have a backup controller on standby - I wore one out because the game gets extremely intense sometimes.

This game has certainly earned its "Mature" rating - blood gushes by gallons, the blood and gore is really over the top, makes the creatures and blood factor in Resident Evil look tame by comparison. The lead character, Eriko, will also gradually lose her clothes if she fails to rescue her friends (it's possible to clear the stages while letting your friends die), giving you plenty of incentive to replay the game using just her and letting all her friends die (there are at least 3 different endings and to see one of them you have to do exactly that). ^_^ This is certainly not a game for little kids - some of the stuff in the game can be quite disturbing, like some realistically rendered creatures, suggestive themes and atmosphere, which were enhanced/heightened by the mostly ambient background music and sound effects. If you are a horror movie fan and love the B-movies' tongue-in-cheek style of humor, chances are you will love this game. It's kind of sad, but if this game came out a year earlier than it did, it just might have saved the Dreamcast from being canned by Sega.

Damn this game is worth 100$ now. I share with you this weekend, one of my most prized games for the Dreamcast Entertainment System.

I can only think of two interesting items in my collection.
1) Original Planescape: Torment release with poster (framed and in my office).
2) Zork for AppleII with box and good-condition Encyclopedia Frobozzica.

edit: check out the bump mapping on that Dragon Force cover. lol jk, the game's booklet was one of those high quality metallic jackets so the letters in SEGA SATURN really are raised. This is honestly the best comparison I've ever seen made if you were thinking on PC terms. Looking at the 2d cover of Guardian Heros is like looking at a console today, while looking at the Dragon Force cover looks like how PC games look today. It's that extra shiny/raised detail that really grabs us.

Was out at my parents earlier celebrating Memorial Day, and my Dad had something special for me. He had been digging around in some old boxes and found this:

tDqGRRKFwVs

(Apologies for the terrible video quality; I just set my camera on a tripod, wrapped my arms around it, then hit record and let it roll.)

Can't even begin to describe how giddy I felt when I got home, popped in some batteries, flipped the switch, and heard that familiar music for the first time in over 2 decades. I literally must have spent hundreds of hours playing this as a young child. The fact that it still works as well as it does (Move button is a little wonky) is nothing short of a miracle.

And for the record, I'm still MUCH better at this than the video shows. I just wanted to give a quick demonstration of the controls and--more importantly--the little end-game ditty. :)

E.V.O. tells the saga of life's evolution on Earth, with a subtext of a creation myth and polytheistic evolution. The player takes the role of one of many billions of lifeforms created by Gaia, the nurturing and benevolent daughter of Sol, the Sun. Among the creatures known as life, there is a competition to evolve, and the best lifeform will eventually be granted the privilege of entering the Garden of Eden and becoming the husband and partner of Gaia. As the game progresses, it soon becomes apparent some mysterious external force is interfering with evolution on Earth in a destructive manner. Strange crystals not native to Gaia appear across the planet, and creatures that eat the crystals are transformed into monstrously powerful beings that dominate all other lifeforms, overconsume resources and disrupt the flow of evolution. In each Age the player character is tasked with confronting the species transformed by the crystals and defeating them so that the evolution of life can continue on track.

In the final Age, the Age of Eden, the player learns a mysterious entity is controlling the world's other lifeforms and sending them against the player. This entity turns out to be Bolbox, a lifeform that has evolved into a freakish and evil advanced being by consuming the crystals, believing itself to be the first human, but in reality is a gigantic one-celled organism. In the game's final battle, the player and Bolbox fight to determine who will gain entry into Eden and become Gaia's partner. Bolbox is defeated, and the player joins Gaia in Eden and is granted the gift of intelligence. It is also revealed the crystals were introduced to Earth by an advanced civilization on Mars, who misguidedly wished to help Earth by speeding its evolution with the crystals. Upon realizing the dangers the crystals create, the Martians decide to leave Earth alone and simply watch it until it becomes advanced enough to interact with Mars.

Evo is more of a cult favorite. Don't get your hopes up in thinking you missed a gem or anything. I remember being a fishreptile looking thing eating other things or something. Also you only had like one attack. Played the underwater levels I think? Repetitive. Also you evolve over time or something.

OLED (http://www.apus-time.com/index.php/en/alpha) - Technology of the 21st century

In comparison to a regular LCD / LED display, an OLED display (Organic Light Emitting Diode) distinguishes itself by its very conservative energy consumption and high intensity of brightness. Unlike its competitive technologies, every single dot lights up individually, thus ensuring a very high resolution in a very small area. This makes OLED displays the peferct fit for small and flexible wrist watches.

APUS set the goal to innovate time keeping instruments in an entirely new way by the use of OLED technology.

I looooooooved Evo as a tween. I can't think of a nice way to say you're an idiot, so I won't say anything at all. ;) I played thru that game so many times, the water was barely even the tip of the game. Amphibians, reptiles, dinosaurs, birds, mammals, so many different ways you could evolve, you can even evolve into a caveman if you follow a certain path.
I wish they'd make a HD version for Xbox Live, I might literally have a nostalgia induced orgasm. Tho the game was still fun when I played it on emulator recently, so I know its not just nostalgia.

Happy 4th of July weekend everyone. Since it's hard to find "All-American" or any "good" american games when it comes to retro (unless we're talking cabinets) so I figured Atari would have to cut the mustard for my outdoor BBQ and what better way to game outdoors than with this classic.

http://i.imgur.com/Sp9x1.jpg

The Atari Lynx has several innovative features including its being the first color handheld, with a backlit display, a switchable right-handed/left-handed (upside down) configuration, and the ability to network with up to 17 other units via its "ComLynx" system (though most games would network eight or fewer players). ComLynx was originally developed to run over infrared links (and was codenamed RedEye).[4] This was changed to a cable-based networking system before the final release.

The Lynx was also the first gaming console with hardware support for zooming/distortion of sprites, allowing fast pseudo-3D games with unrivaled quality at the time and a capacity for drawing filled polygons with limited CPU intervention. Blue Lightning, a game with After Burner-like graphics, was especially notable and featured in TV advertising for the console.

The games were originally meant to be loaded from tape, but were later changed to load from ROM. The game data still needed to be copied from ROM to RAM before it could be used, so less memory was available and the games loaded relatively slowly.[1]

Love the D&D books as I've got my own to share in the coming months. For this sunday I decided to try something different. Just like in Terreria, it's not always the smartest thing to do by digging down. Going up has it's advantages too, and while this may not be some golden city in the clouds, what I did find in the attic might as well be. I found my old box of magic cards! Magic came out during a strange time when 16 bit systems were rocking, but I needed more of a challenge when it came to gaming. Magic stepped in to fill that void, and left a sizable one in my wallet lol.

I still have most of my Magic Cards. I started playing about a week before Legends was released so the majority of my stuff is from Legends> Ice Age. I was able to get some stuff pre-legends but not much. I was living in Central Fla at the time and if you didnt pre-order boxes of cards when a new set came out you werent getting any other than in-trade. But you could literally find a place to go play magic every night of the week.

PC Accelerator (PCXL) was a personal computer game magazine that was published by Imagine Media (now[when?] a subsidiary of Future Publishing). It was known for its Maxim-like humor and photography. Its last issue was dated June 2000. After the split up of the magazine, editor-in-chief Mike Salmon went on to start the Official Xbox Magazine.[1] While some of the staff was sent to PC Gamer, others went on to work for Daily Radar. In September 2007, a special Fall issue of PCXL was released to newsstands only. This issue was primarily written by the current staff of PC Gamer with contributions by former PCXL staff including Rob Smith and Dan Egger.[2]

If I owned the big system, then I just had to have the portable. This week I cracked open a new box to find my old Neo-Geo Pocket Color. It's one of my favorite handhelds with an exceptional D stick I've yet to find a rival for. The games were fun, sound decent, graphics good. Sadly it was launched about the same time as the gameboy advance SP and promptly got trounced. A few years earlier and I think the pocket color would have had a greater following.

http://i.imgur.com/e8Ska.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/mN0Oq.jpg

The Neo Geo Pocket was SNK's first hand held video game system, released in Japan in late 1998; however, lower than expected sales resulted in its discontinuation in 1999,[1] and was immediately succeeded by the Neo Geo Pocket Color. The system only had a retail release within the Japan and Hong Kong market. It is the first handheld of the Neo Geo family.

Though the system enjoyed only a short life, there were some significant games released on the system such as Samurai Shodown, and King of Fighters R-1. The entire Neo Geo Pocket game library included: Melan Chan's Growth Diary, Puzzle Link, Pocket Tennis, Neo Cup 98, Neo Cup 98 plus, King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown, Master of Syougi, Neo Cherry Master, Baseball Stars.

The Neo Geo Pocket Color game library is mostly forward compatible with the Neo Geo Pocket, meaning that the majority of the newer color games can play on the Neo Geo Pocket. There are, however, notable exceptions such as Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure and SNK vs. Capcom: Match Of The Millennium, although some of these games contain mini games within them. The newer Neo Geo Pocket Color is fully backward compatible and can play all games released for the Neo Geo Pocket. "The Last Blade: Beyond the Destiny" also does not work on the Neo Geo Pocket.

You do have a really cool collection of retro gaming goodness. You should really try to get that stuff out of boxes and into an Man Cave sized entertainment center, where you can once again fire up those babies!

...or donated/sell it all to me. :)

Either way, it needs to be loved and nurtured, much like Seaman!

One day I wish. I've even got a 36 inch CRT television that still works for the light guns. 4 player matches of point blank 1, 2, and 3. To think that game supported up to 8 players, 4 guncons was crazy enough.

This week I stopped home to drag out my PS1 goodies and the perfect place to start is the Guncon collection. The Guncon is still the best light gun ever made for a console imo and has a lot of AAA titles associated with it. Listed here is Project Horned Owl, Time Crisis, and Elemental Gearbolt on the left. Point Blant 1, 2, and 3 on the right. Some Guncon games could support up to 8 players via a daisy chain style of connections, making 4 people flailing plastic weapons around at the screen really fun. Why these haven't been polished up and re-released for the Wii or Move boggles the mind but oh well, enjoy my collection I share with you.

I thought I'd give you a sneak peek at my PS1 folder. Those with a keen eye will notice a Star Control 2 booklet sticking out from between the pages. That's a bookmark I use for where the PS1 games end, and the 3DO games begin in the folder.

If you want it for the PC just google UrQuan Masters for a free version. The one for the 3DO is rare as it's a "talkie" version. Also hyper melee plays the best on game pads. I always had to use a gravis pad for my 486dx266 but it's streamlined on the 3do. Hmmm maybe I'll show some of those next week.

Correct! The Ur-Quan Masters Project (http://sc2.sourceforge.net/) has the game working on all modern versions of Windows, Mac OS X, and several flavors of Linux. Even better is the fact that it can use the assets for any version of the game--PC, 3DO, or user-remixed version of most of the musical tracks from the game. That includes the excellent in-game speech from the 3DO version, AND the awesome scaling effect in the battle mode.

An absolute MUST GET, especially considering it's 100% free (because Toys for Bob released the assets of the 3DO version as public domain some time back).

So I mentioned to a friend I was going to bust out some old D&D stuff and here's a little curiosity I've enjoyed over the years. It's an Electronic version of DnD where you use a lot of your imagination (duh) to navigate a labyrinth with sound to uncover your way. As you move, you build the board around you until you find the treasure or the dragon. It's a cool concept to mimic the unknown and pretty fun to play. You play until you're either dead or escape with the treasure, and it even has a solitaire mode for practicing your skills at dragon crawling.

I wish. I still remember seeing it in stores but I was so young nobody would get it for me because it looked too adult and scary. These days it's too expensive to collect, especially with a fully working tower.

However, I managed pick up a copy of one of the very first analog games I had as a kid which I'll bust out along with more DnD stuff later down the road.

Haha sorta. I've always had the funding I need for my hobby, no questions asked weather provided by myself or others, but the funny thing is a lot of toys/games from growing up got donated to the purple heart or kidney foundation. (our family provides to both every year)

Most of what I'm showing off today is what I decided to start collecting after I moved out. Going after either things I use to own, or always wish I had with out paying a mint for them. Take my 3do collection for instance. I had a 3d0 back when they were new and hot with a bunch of games, but I later traded those into the pawn shop for an even newer PS1 back when they were the hottness ect. I was doing the played it or trade it thing back when Gamestop was still Babbages and Fuckoland.

Later on I really missed my 3do so I picked up a guy's collection on ebay, and now one is back in my collection again where it belongs. Some things like the D&D games ect are all original. Others I've filled in the gaps with, but what makes every bit of my collection important to me is it all contains memories. Memories to experience with new friends and old.

Makes me wish I had saved the 8088 processor out of my first "proper" PC. I say "proper", because my first IBM PC compatible was actually a heavily modified IBM PCjr that my uncle gave me.

The story behind it is kind of interesting, and goes thusly: My Uncle Harry worked at Oak Ridge Labs back in the 70s and 80s, and he would get some of their tossaway tech and bring it home. So he gets this PCjr but doesn't like how underpowered it is at 4.77Mhz and 128KB RAM. So he ships it off to a specialty shop in California that overclocks it to run at a blazing 6Mhz and bumps the memory to a mind-shattering 512KB. I can't remember exactly how much it cost, but it was some ridiculously ungodly amount. In any case, that lasted him a couple years with him, before he eventually got power hungry again and upgraded to a straight PC XT (8Mhz and 640KB RAM, a system which I also would eventually inherit in 91), and sent the PCjr my way around '88 or '89.

However, I was a HUGE C64 fan at the time and loathed all things IBM, so it sat largely unplayed on the far end of my computer desk. It was pretty cool that it could run the original King's Quest game using its two floppy drives without having to swap disks, though.

In any case, can't hardly believe your first was a DX2-66, lock. Didn't realize you got into compys so late in the game. :) Loved my own DX2-66 dearly. Was such a huge jump from my 386DX-40.

Oh, here's a memory for any of you old-school DIY PC assemblers back in the day: does anyone else remember the turbo switch on the PCs from the late 80s and early 90s? I'm sure lots of you do. But how many of ya'll ever actually had to map out the jumper PIN settings to make the computer case's LED display show the right numbers depending on whether you had turbo enabled or not? :)

Yep the first computer for the "family" was a PC junior with my first two games being Kings Quest *the cartridge* and Jumpman on a 3.5 floppy. The first PC that was entirely mine was the 486 which screamed once I got 8mb of ram in it.

(For those of you that aren't aware, the boxed copies of the two Mario games alone go for over $30 each.)

And best of all? At the very bottom of the crate in a paper bag... A POWER GLOVE! COMPLETE WITH SENSOR BAR!!!

http://i.imgur.com/H1Mvy.jpg?1

http://i.imgur.com/SgOrD.jpg?1

FIVE FREAKING DOLLARS!!! For not only the NES Action Pack console and five boxed copies of NES games, which together are rated at well over $100 collector's value, but I also got a Power Glove WITH the sensor, in great looking shape, no less. Now granted, I haven't had a chance to try out the NES-001 console, Zapper, or Power Glove, or games. But even if all the hardware stuff is fried, this was still a ridiculously awesome buy due to the games. And if the Power Glove works well, I'm sure I could easily get $40-$50 for it off eBay (not that there's a chance in the world that I would sell it if it works).

At the same yard sale, I also picked up a life-size cardboard cut-out of Boba Fett for $5, as well as a complete PSone plus 7 games for $6, and a framed poster of the 1977 Star Wars Style C promo (although seeing as it's 24x36, I'm pretty sure it's a repro, even though there's no printing on it to suggest as much).

And to think that it wasn't even the last NES yard-sale find of the day for me... Definitely hard to top, though. :)

Ok, on to yard sale find number two on the day...

Didn't get as good a buy on this one, as the guy selling knew a thing or two about retro videogames being worth something. Up for sale was the following:

- A pristine condition NES-001 console with working power adapter, RF switch cable, Zapper, and 2 control pads
- 21 games, consisting of the following:

- Bionic Commando
- Castlevania
- Double Dragon II
- Double Dribble
- Dr. Mario
- Gauntlet (Tengen)
- Gun Smoke
- Hogan's Alley
- Ikari Warriors
- Kid Icarus (!)
- Life Force
- Mario Bros/Duck Hunt
- Mike Tyson's Punchout
- Ninja Gaiden
- Operation Wolf
- Renegade
- Shinobi (Tengen)
- Top Gun (second one of the day!)
- TMNT
- WWF Wrestlemania
- Yoshi

Some really nice games in there, and about 2/3 of them that I don't already have. So I ask him what he'll take for all of it, and he says $100. Well there's no chance I'm dropping that kind of cash, even if technically the cumulative value of everything he has is fairly in excess of that. So I finally talk him down to $70, which I decided I could live with. I have a brother-in-law who's planning on purchasing an NES of his own so he can play Duck Hunt with his kids, so I figured I could sell him the console, controllers, and a couple of core games for $35 (which is still a great deal, considering that will include copies of SMB/Duck Hunt, SMB2, and SMB3), which will offset half the cost. And as it turned out, when I called him later, he was more than thrilled to take me up on the offer. So that leaves me out $35, but with around 12 or 13 new games. Plus, by the time I sell or trade the remaining dupes, I'm sure I'll at least nearly break even on the cash, and may even turn a small profit, depending on who I find to sell/trade games with.

Here's some more stuff I've collected over the past couple months or so during my retrogaming rampage:

http://i41.tinypic.com/104pz5z.jpg

I recently started my Colecovision collection. Despite only having 11 games at the moment, I do at least already have 2 of the 4 hardware expansion devices (with the Roller Control being complete and in near mint condition inside its original box), with hopefully a 3rd (the Atari Expander) being acquired in the coming week.

http://i41.tinypic.com/21cbcbb.jpg

I really LOVE this controller. This is the closest thing to an authentic old-school arcade trackball controller I've ever used. And the one I happen to have not only works perfectly, but it also looks like it was never used once. There's not a scratch on the thing, and it looks like it just rolled off the factory line.

http://i40.tinypic.com/2mqnss4.jpg

While the outside of the box is a bit worn, the styrofoam and manual are all but mint.

http://i44.tinypic.com/jgpbfd.jpg

Not a single piece of the original package missing! Interesting thing about this expansion: it used a pigtail pass-through power adapter. You would plug the Colecovision's power supply into the Roller Control power plug, and then the other end of THAT plug went into your CV. It also took up both controller ports in the base console, which means that getting everything set up and ready to play is a real bear. But it's all worth it once you start to spinning that lovely white ball...

I'm really proud of this wheel. Picked it up for $10, and it was absolutely filthy and the owner had no clue if it worked or not. Took it home and tried it out, and sure enough--no dice. Pedal would accelerate, but the steering wasn't registering. Took it completely apart, cleaned every component (with careful attention paid to the optic pass-through wheel and the light-sensor), put it all back together, and voila! Works perfect now. I can Turbo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYGIcfg4NbM) with the best of them. :)

The Sears release of the original Pong C-100 home console. Works perfect (if not with a tiny bit of static). One weird thing about this unit I've noticed: While it was obviously designed to work on the black and white TVs which were still common-place during the 70s (as in fact the hardware itself could only output montone visuals), on modern CRT sets you get a weird, psychedelic color effect when playing that almost makes it seem like an intentional design choice. Oh and also, almost all of these early RF-connected plug-and-play systems required you to turn down the volume on your TV to zero, as the sound was designed to come from the game unit itself. And in fact, the TV makes a horrible, loud static sound when these games are turned on with the volume up.

http://i41.tinypic.com/260cp3a.jpg

Atari Video Pinball! Interesting factoid about this game: it was the first Atari home console to sport (intentionally) color graphics. Works perfect.

http://i42.tinypic.com/23rscg0.jpg

Sears Tele-games Pong Sports IV. One of the first (if not the first) games to support 4 player game modes.

http://i44.tinypic.com/f44kyc.jpg

A pretty generic Sears pong clone. I really just picked it up because I loved the awesome wood-grain styling. :) Couple other interesting notes about this one: it came with some external control dials which you could plug into the back which would let you control player 1 or player 2's paddle via this external controller rather than the one integrated into the console. I can only assume this was designed to enable more casual gameplay (leaning back in the couch, etc.). Another weird thing about MY particular one of these is that, while the unit otherwise works perfectly, the player 1 paddle is completely invisible EXCEPT when going over the boundary lines at the top and bottom of the screen, during which the player 1 paddle's silhouette blocks the boundary line. This makes it almost impossible to play the game. I took apart the console to try and figure out a way to fix it. And while I was unable to correct the problem, I did find that the player 1 side had apparently fallen victim to some kind of sticky drink spill at some point, presumably shorting out something that has led to the weird "dark paddle" behavior.

http://i40.tinypic.com/21f0cpl.jpg

Got this in an Atari 2600 lot as a junk item. And indeed, it was junk when I first got it. Wouldn't turn on at first, then after re-soldering some wire connections, it would turn on, but the paddles would move very erratically. So took it apart a second time, disassembled the dial-control potentiometers, cleaned them thoroughly, reassembled, and now it works perfectly. Other than being a bit raggedy looking, the only downside is that it originally came with a light-gun attachment for a couple of the game modes. And of course, that gun was long gone by the time I bought the unit.

http://i42.tinypic.com/11ghdoj.jpg

My absolute favorite dedicated game console! True, the game modes are just variants of tank combat similar to the 2600 pack-in title. But the controls are AWESOME! Authentic, two-stick, bulldozer-style tank controls with a thumb-toggled fire button make this game fantastic fun to play, especially with two players. One thing I'll explain about this pic: the handles are off the main unit because the game doesn't fit in the box with the handles attached. And to attach the handles, you have to do some wire-feeding that was honestly more than I wanted to mess with just to take a picture.

Some more odds'n'ends stuff:

http://i42.tinypic.com/1658py.jpg

The Sony PSone I picked up this morning for $6, along with 7 games. Amazing how tiny this little console is. And yet, it's surprisingly heavy.

http://i43.tinypic.com/w4isw.jpg

I have no idea on earth why I bought these last month. Still, kind of cool that they're all NRFB.

http://i44.tinypic.com/t0i068.jpg

Or this. What was I thinking?

http://i39.tinypic.com/2u6hheo.jpg

Finally picked up an iCade when I found one on clearance for $50. Works perfect with my Android-loaded TouchPad when running MAME4droid.

http://i43.tinypic.com/10p60xc.jpg

It's awesome the way the (non-operational) coin-slot receptacle lights up as the bluetooth connectivity indicator.

http://i40.tinypic.com/2n22rd.jpg

My Game Gear collection is starting out quite nicely...

http://i43.tinypic.com/rihhde.jpg

Have my best-working Game Gear (out of the 6 I now own), the TV Tuner adapter, power adapter, and 8-games all in one handy, dandy carrying case. I've actually got a car adapter on the way to round out this package. :)

http://i40.tinypic.com/bgw661.jpg

If only the Nomad had used an active-matrix TFT LCD screen instead of the crappy dual-scan LCD for which Sega instead opted, it probably would have been the definitive handheld of its day, especially since it sported both a 2nd player controller port AND A/V out to TVs. But instead, that distinction goes to...

http://i42.tinypic.com/a0dnwg.jpg

The Turbo Express! Such an amazing handheld. Gorgeous active-matrix screen with NO ghosting whatsoever. About the only thing I can complain about is that the sound on mine is blown out (a common affliction for these devices, but with a simple internal component fix you can do if you're handy with a soldering iron), which means I only get audio through a powered headset. Still, this is the creme de' la creme of classic handhelds if you're a collector. Note that I also extravagantly opted to pick up the now-near-useless analog TV tuner accessory. (Hey, I can still pick up my local ION station on it. :) )

Now on to some stuff I picked up a couple months or more back but never got around to posting in here:

http://i42.tinypic.com/oapyiu.jpg

My beloved boxed Intellivision. It even has the purchase receipt and original warranty card with it. Works beautifully, and came with a TON of CIB games.

http://i42.tinypic.com/33myfpw.jpg

Look at all those lovely game boxes!

http://i41.tinypic.com/ri6loi.jpg

I even got an extra Sears-branded INTV on accident when I was ordering the Intellivoice module and some extra games. How cool is that? Oh yeah, and this one also works perfect. An embarrassment of gaming riches, I say! :)

http://i43.tinypic.com/j8gpk0.jpg

I got all of this awesome stuff for free from a guy on craigslist who was throwing out all his daughter's videogames after she left for college. Her loss = the start of my re-born Genesis collection.

Ok... I think that's all for now. I have a few more recent pickups that I couldn't be bothered to set up to take pictures of at the moment, but I'll try and get around to those in the coming days.

Some yard sales (best prices), some Craigslist (second best prices), some eBay (not great prices), and a few impulse pieces from local retro game shops (the Nomad, for example--pure $70 impulse buy).

But yes--yard sales are my purchasing venue of choice when it comes to old games and other stuff I'm collecting. (Anyone interested in seeing pics of some of the killer slot car sets I've picked up recently or some of my old vintage toys pulled out of my parents' storage barn?)

Oh and also, quite a lot of this stuff didn't look anywhere near this nice when I first got them. There's been a lot of toothbrush-time been applied to some of these, especially the old Colecovision, Intellivision, and Genesis.

Some more stuff:

http://i40.tinypic.com/fumdlv.jpg

My Sega Master System collection is coming along nicely, especially the Light Phaser games.

http://i39.tinypic.com/11jsxnb.jpg

Ah, the Sega Menacer... Note that my binocular holder was missing when I took this shot; thankfully I found it as I went to put it away. Crisis averted. :)

Truly, a light gun before its time. Did you know it could do real time tracking? There's a game that's sort of like a reverse Arkanoid where you push a ball around the screen, and it constantly tracks where the gun is pointed in real time. Very impressive tech! To do this on the Super Scope 6, you had to enable "Turbo" mode, and even then, it only tracked while you were holding down the trigger, and supposedly gobbled up batteries by the half-dozen. Speaking of the Super Scope...

http://i41.tinypic.com/url0o.jpg

Yoshi's Safari is probably the most fun I've had with a light-gun game since Duck Hunt. Great, great game!

http://i41.tinypic.com/35i2nbd.jpg

Ooohhh... Gotta love a good CIB (complete in box) peripheral. :)

http://i40.tinypic.com/102mla0.jpg

My CIB copy of Lethal Enforcers for the Sega CD. Not a bad port of the game, but certainly not very much improved over the cartridge version.

http://i42.tinypic.com/j8ck09.jpg

Boxed copy of Mario Paint, complete with the increasingly hard-to-find Mario Mouse Mat.

http://i42.tinypic.com/2h2ijhw.jpg

Yeah, I'm a sucker for controllers. From top left, these are a Genesis arcade stick, Genesis Dual Turbo wireless controllers, the NES Advantage stick, the Sega Mouse, the QuikShot for NES, Supersonic twin wireless joysticks for NES, and the SNES Advantage (or whatever it was called).

I REALLY need to dig out all my old PC controllers if you want to see a wild collection of one off joysticks and gamepads.

http://i40.tinypic.com/33ys753.jpg

Gotta keep those old catridges and console slots clean! :)

http://i39.tinypic.com/33vkshu.jpg

This is the -original- ACT Labs Gun System (dual edition) for PC. I used to be an active member of an emulation community, Retrogames.com (http://www.retrogames.com/), back in the mid to late 90s. And our forum members actually got the chance to provide direct input to ACT Labs regarding the manufacture of a PC-compatible light gun intended specifically for use in emulation apps like MAME, Nestopia, etc.. And before they would even agree to do a manufacturing run, we had to collect a group of at least 100 pre-orders, of which I was one. (The cost was around $100 plus shipping, as I recall.)

As for how it worked, it was OKAY. It was kind of a pain to hook up, because you had to hook it inline between your VGA adapter and your monitor, PLUS a power adapter. It would only work with CRT displays (for obvious reasons), and your PC also had to have a DA-15 game port adapter, which was a pain because they were already becoming less and less common at that time as USB was taking off. Still, if you were wanting to recreate those arcade and NES light-gun experiences on your TV, there really wasn't a better option available at the time, and the unit did have some nice, forward thinking feature.

One of those was a nunchuck accessory (bear in mind that this was half a decade before the Wii). You could use this off-hand controller in lieu of a second player gun and it would move the mouse around the screen and allow you click/right-click where needed. It also had a very nice holster base station that kept things nice and tidy when you weren't using it. But detection could be finicky, and I would frequently have to recalibrate in the middle of a game. Plus, it was designed with Windows 98 in mind, and the XP drivers (at least last time I tried) were garbage. Still, many were the ducks I blasted out of the sky using this set up and an NES emulator. I also finally got to see the ending of Revolution X after beating it proper light-gun style (albeit with unlimited quarters).

ACT Labs would go on to make quite a large number of light guns and accessories (http://www.act-labs.com/products/gun1.htm) for PC, mostly for use in MAME cabs and the like. But I like to know that I was part of the group that first helped prompt the company to take the leap in supporting emulation enthusiasts. :)

Oh, and just a quick update on my $5 miracle NES find: the console itself will indeed require a 72-pin cartridge slot replacement surgery. But the power adapter, RF switch, Zapper, and both NES control pads all work great, as do all the games. Awesome!

UPDATE: Already fixed the NES without even having to wait on a new 72 pin part. Was able to go in and take out the current 72 pin and use a tiny flathead to pry each pin back upright, then clean them all with 2000 grit sandpaper and isopropyl alcohol. Put it all back together, popped in SMB3, and bingo! Red curtain raising awesomeness. :)

Metal Jesus made me catch the bug, and it is seriously fun. It can get a bit out of hand at times, though. More than once my wife has had a seething look on her face as she brings me three shipped packages that just arrived at the door. :) Fortunately, most of the old stuff I pick up off eBay or Amazon are cheapie cartridges at anywhere from $2 to $6 a pop, plus shipping.

Also, you'd be surprised what's still out there. If you live in an area where folks do lots of yard sales, take advantage of it. Go on to craigslist and try doing searches that winnow down the field and give you the best chance of finding some good retrogaming stuff. My stand-by searches are always "yard sale games", "garage sale games", "yard sale nintendo", "garage sale nintendo", etc.. Of course, not every yard sale is listed on craigslist, so it can be profitable to just drive around and do quick hits on every yard sale you see. If they have something you're looking for, awesome! If not, don't be shy to ask the yard sale host if they might have any old games systems they'd be interested in selling. You might be surprised at how often people tilt their head back, think for a second, and then say, "Yeah, you know, there's an old NES in the closet we haven't touched in years. How much will you give me for it?"

Just remember: always know the baseline prices for general stuff, and NEVER overpay (this is easy to do when you get carried away during an eBay auction). A good place to baseline is eBay. Those prices are high, but fairly representative of collector value. Another good place to baseline (and quite often to buy) is the AtariAge.com Marketplace (http://www.atariage.com/forums/forum/6-marketplace/) forum. Lots of hardcore collectors there who trade amongst themselves, but also welcome newbies and outsiders (although you can obviously do better deals if you have a rapport with the regulars).

Oh, and stay away from ShopGoodwill.com for videogames in general. That place has turned into reseller hell.

Again, your best buys are almost always going to be found at yard sales. Plus, there's just a visceral joy that comes from finding something that's valuable to you on a personal level hidden away in some box at an out of the way rummage sale down some forgotten gravel road. Thrill of the hunt, my friend! Thrill of the hunt. Prey most rare is prize most fair. :)

Atari Lynx! Okay, actually it's just a case I picked up super cheap--no handheld, no games... YET. But now I'm motivated to work on fixing that. :)

But the module itself is in perfect condition. And yes, I realize that it's ludicrous to buy a VCS player module for a CV when I have three perfectly functional Atari 2600s (one original VCS and 2 2600jr's). But if you're thinking that, then you obviously just don't "get it". :)

And finally...

As seen on AVGN (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fy373DpKGAE), the VictorMaxx StuntMaster VR headset. I remembered seeing these in Babbages back in the day and thinking that they looked sooooooo awesome. So when I had the chance to pick one up for $40, I just had to do it.

I have to admit--it looks promising when you first get it out and start looking at it.

READY TO AWESOME!

http://i.imgur.com/jXHqE.jpg

Sadly, its performance is disappointing. Despite the promise of "virtual reality", all you really get is a small LCD screen magnified by a cheap plastic view screen. Plus, the unit sits really heavy on the front of your head and eventually ends up resting a hard, plastic crevice along the ridge of your nose. And all this for a very poor, washed out display. I will admit that the audio is quite good, far better than I expected. But overall, it's just a fun piece of retrogaming kitsch to own and not so much use.

Currently working on obtaining the following:

- Atari Lynx (Model 1 or 2)
- TG-16 console & more games
- Coleco Vision Super Action Controller (boxed, preferably)
- Any other mainline consoles I don't yet have: Odyssey, Odyssey 2, Intellivision II, etc..

I think the funnest part of collecting this old stuff is just being opportunistic and having such a broad range of items to seek out that it makes almost anything you find exciting in its own way. Run across an old Atari lot? AWESOME! Find an Apple IIe in someone's garage that they're about to throw out? SWEET! Go digging through your own attic and find an old Pong clone you'd forgotten about for 25 years? HELLA COOL!

Now if only I can find where I stashed all my old mini arcade cabinets (http://miniarcade.com/) from back in the day. I had a Pacman, Galaxian, Donkey Kong, and I'm pretty sure a Q-bert. Time for a deep-dig expedition in the barn. :)

Just a run of the mill shipping crate that held 2 toaster-style NES's, with zappers, controllers, adapters, etc., and a bunch of games. Spiffy!

Best part is, I'll be able to clean up and sell the two toasters along with some of my dupe games and keep all the ones I didn't already have (4 or 5), which should net me far more than I spent on the box. Granted, there's a solid couple hours of cleaning and potentially fixing I'm going to have to do to get the consoles ready to sell, but I kind of enjoy doing that anyway at this point. Gives me something to do to keep me awake during all the long, dry conference calls I have to dial in to each day. :)

In most cases the yellowing is not related to smoke/dirt. It was a chemical additive of the plastic that would change color when heated up/exposed to light. Some original NES and SNESs had the additive but was later changed in the newer models.

If it is indeed the chemical process rather than dirt you can't restore it. Not that I recommend it, but you can scrape the plastic and see the discoloration goes all the way through the material as opposed to surface discoloration from smoke.

Great start to your collection! I would recommend one thing, though: Focus primarily on reacquiring the games that hold some meaning to you (games you used to have, friends had, ones you might have wanted but couldn't afford, etc.), and don't necessarily go down the completionist path and try to acquire EVERYTHING. I think that's just about madness, save for those who can genuinely afford it. (And believe me--the vast majority of hardcore collectors honestly can't and shouldn't.) That's not to say you shouldn't be an opportunist and be willing to pick up a bunch of games with which you have neither a connection nor interest when an excellent deal presents itself. But don't pay eBay prices for an"rare" crappy game just to have it in your collection. Disappointing as it is to realize, these games are extraordinarily unlikely to be our retirement plans. (unless, of course, you just happen across a pallet of NIB Atari Air Raid carts. :) )

Seriously, though. I totally pwned a yard-sale score today. So check this out:

http://i.imgur.com/c5WRa.jpg

Tub full of miscellaneous videogame stuff at some frat house's yard sale.

http://i.imgur.com/GNuiM.jpg

A bunch of random stuff, but right off the bat I see a Dreamcast and two N64s, along with 10 or so N64 titles, including the coveted Zelda:OoT and DK64 carts. So I offer the half-dazed, shirtless 20-year-old $30 for the whole lot. He thinks a second, hesitates, and says he was really wanting to get at least $50 for it. Ultimately, I got him down to $40 and I ended up walking away pretty happy with that price. Got into the car and started going through it, and it seems to have been a pretty good find.

http://i.imgur.com/kAxY6.jpg

The three consoles (complete except for the DC having no controller), 11 N64 carts that included some of the more sought after commons (SM64 x 2, Mario Golf, DK64, Zelda:OoT, Banjo-Kazooie, Goldeneye, Starfox 64, et. al.), three N64 controllers with 1 Mem-pak, A Mad-Catz light-gun for the original Xbox, an official Xbox Controller S, 2 MadCatz PS2 controllers, a Play Joy (Bootleg TV plug'n'play unit pre-loaded with tons of emulated NES games), and lots of miscellaneous power and video cables.

But I reach the bottom of the bin, and what do I find?

http://i.imgur.com/FzTJW.jpg

A PSP-1001! Battery's dead, though, so I don't know if it works. And I'm slightly disappointed that there's no charger for it in the tub. But--and I kid you not--guess what I found not 4 yard sale stops later?

http://i.imgur.com/BXGBH.jpg

That is what religious yard-salers would refer to as "Providence". :) Couldn't believe it! Saw a small tub labelled "Cell Phone Chargers $2" and decided to go through it on a lark. Sure enough, this baby was down in there just waiting for me to pick it up. Of course, the question still remained as to whether or not the PSP worked. So I get home, plug it in, wait a few minutes, and then...

http://i.imgur.com/Zm8Du.jpg?1

Voila! As the scantily clad Megan Fox can attest, it works just fine. It's actually been modded and is running a custom firmware. Even better, I check the Memory Stick slot and find...

http://i.imgur.com/CiAAD.jpg

So I'm super pleased with the purchase over all. Couple that with the fact that I also found my girls a Furreal "Biscuit Lovin' Pup (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oevHJvHmsz8)" for $5, and I'd have to say it was one of my better yard sale outings.

Oh, one thing I also thought was kind of cool if not completely useless: there was also a CIB original Xbox Live Starter Kit in the bin.

http://i.imgur.com/BDMk5.jpg

In fact, the three month subscription card had never even been used.

http://i.imgur.com/NaiTz.jpg

I know that seems "meh" now. But just think--in 15-20 years, some idiot collector will probably give me $50 for it. ;)

Damn. You visit a lot of yardsales or are you just lucky? :)

gzsfrk
04-29-2012, 05:37 PM
A bit of both. :). My normal pattern is to map out and prioritize any yard sales which explicitly advertise having videogames stuff, and then after hitting those, on my way back home I stop at every one I see signs for. If they have games out and it's something I want, then I make a starting offer and negotiate from there. If not, I ask if they have anything I might be intersted in. And if not, then I move on. And yes, sometimes I'm amazed at how serendipitous some of the days finds can be. (Like today with the PSP and charger.)

As they say, that's just how game chasin' go. :)

Just a quickie update to show off what arrived in the mail today:

Preh-shussssss........

FYI, that TurboPad box contains a controller that's never even been used. The cords are still bound and it even has the protective plastic wrap on the face of the pad. How sad is that? But since I have a second loose controller and no multi-tap (the TG-16 only had one controller port, so 2-player is no go unless you buy an extra adapter), I think I'll leave it NIB, at least for now.

Now if I can just find Hucards of Blazing Lazers, Magical Chase, Air Zonk, Bonk III, and Soldier Blade at a reasonable price, the world will be an even more beautiful place. :)

Jaguar's hopefully going to be arriving later this week. Not as excited about that one, but on the bright side, I did get a copy of Raiden for it super cheap. That should at least make for a few hours of the happy.

Nice! I love my Genny (Megadrive). It's probably one of the more affordable classic systems to collect for as CIB copies of most games are still relatively plentiful.

Out of curiosity, where did you pick it up from?

Another piece of the puzzle arrived today. :)

http://i.imgur.com/tT7su.jpg

A Magnavox CD-i 450!

Yeah, yeah, I know; CD-i's were legendarily awful. But I've always wanted to pick one upfor nostalgia reasons if I managed to find it for the right price. And turns out I did! Came with a bunch of games too, including three that I've been buying over and over again for the past 20 years--Dragon's Lair I & II, and Space Ace. (I've long suspected that I'm actually a programmed sleeper agent and that, similar to Mel Gibson's character in "Conspiracy Theory", they keep track of me based on my recurring purchases of Don-Bluth-animation-based videogames.)

http://i.imgur.com/YMxLn.jpg

Nice, clean system. No notable marks or scratches, although I did have to use the Oops! (http://www.tswfast.com/do/product/800116/HO710747) remover on some leftover sticker residue on the front.

http://i.imgur.com/wehzY.jpg

I like the way the tray opens up. No ejector mechanism to worry about failing, no muss, no fuss.

But does it work?

http://i.imgur.com/XwQeo.jpg

Powers up, anyway. What about a game? Pop in a disc and...

http://i.imgur.com/HZvHN.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/yfCqZ.jpg

Niiiiiice....

I much prefer this unit over the GARGANTUAN 1st-gen Philips ones (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:CD-i-910-Console-Set.png). As an added bonus, this one also came with the Digital Video cartridge (http://cdii.blogspot.com/2009/05/digital-video-cartridge.html) already installed, so it's pretty much a complete package. I also am SUPER stoked that this one came with not only the Magnavox CD-i gamepad (which closely resembles a standard Genesis 3-button controller), but also with the stock Philips model's re-branded original Gravis-Gamepad (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravis_PC_GamePad)-style controller, which both works and feels great.

http://i.imgur.com/O5ilS.jpg

The only downside about this unit is the funky power supply. It connects to the console via an RJ-45 ethernet-style plug. So that means if the adapter ever goes bad, I'm pretty much out of luck as far as a replacement goes unless I can find ANOTHER one exactly like it. (Good luck doing that at a reasonable cost.)

I actually had a chance to try all the games. The Dragon's Lair/Space Ace games play exactly like you'd expect. Video quality isn't quite up to the DVD standard, but it's a solid step above the CD-ROM releases that were the PC-equivalent at the time. It also came with two other animated-adventure FMV games: Kingdom the Far Reaches (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0QBSxsgPUQ) and Escape from Cyber City. Kingdom plays pretty much like a choose your own path adventure novel as far as I can tell. Not a lot of timed moves (at least, not as far as I played), but rather lots of choices that determine how your story progresses. Escape from Cyber City, on the other hand, is almost identical in gameplay to the arcade classic Cobra Command (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VN1LC2s4P-w). You go through FMV scenes, and while they play, you have to move the cursor around and shoot the enemies that appear. Unfortunately, it's all but impossible to play with the gamepad, so I'll need to start looking for either the mouse or trackpad controller, I think. (Unless it supports the light-gun peripheral that came with Mad Dog Mccree?)

The other games are either subpar or garbage. Video Speedway is complete crap; possibly the worst driving game I've ever played. Alien Gate is an awful shooter, almost seems more like a junior-year CS project than an actual published title. Tetris is an OK port, although controls are painfully sluggish; nice backgrounds and music, though.

I honestly think I most enjoyed playing around with the 1992-era Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia. There's a feature in it called "Time Machine" that makes browsing major events and news from different periods really fun and interesting to peruse. I spent the better part of 15 minutes reading the article on Thomas Edison. Kind of hard to imagine that that was a state of the art research solution before Internet and Wikipedia came along and spoiled us.

Oh and because I know you're wondering, it didn't come with any of the Nintendo-licensed games. But I do have a copy of Hotel Mario (the only one worth playing, as I understand) enroute. I'm determined to find at least ONE game for this system other than a laserdisc rehash that isn't complete fail. :)

Some stuff I added to my collection yesterday:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4687/Metal_Jesus/Junk/Magazines.jpg

Magazine donation from a buddy of mine from the old Sierra days (who now works at Bungie). He gave me a stack about 50 magazines, and these little gems are in there. Notice that is Issue #5 of Nintendo Fun Club New which became Nintendo Power! That issue of Joystick has tips for Dragons Lair & Star Wars in the arcade. CGW is all about a new Sierra game: Dagger of Amon Ra and gift ideas for Christmas 1983!

Mark also donated his complete C128 collection, which consisted of 3 Commodore 128s, 2 disk drives, a Commodore monitor, printer and loads and loads of software, programming books. Plus...much more.

Some random Atari 2600 & Intellivision games. Some of those 2600 games are kinda hard to find. Paid a $2.50 a game, which is decent.

Played through the first ten levels, and I have to say--James (AVGN) got this game totally wrong (www.youtube.com/watch?v=tl2Wz1qlzco). It plays great, has some nice production values (aside from the admittedly terrible animated sequences) and is a uniquely fun and addictive Mario game experience. If anything, you might could knock it for being a bit on the hard side (took me about 10 tries to beat the first "boss fight"). But I don't think that's any kind of reason to dismiss the game as trash.

I think it's just that modern-day gamers have gotten spoiled into thinking that skill alone should be enough to beat a game. Not so with the games of yesteryear. True, you had to have some considerable degree of raw twitch skill to beat games like Mike Tyson's PunchOut. But many other games of the era required that you learn and/or memorize the levels. Hotel Mario falls into that latter category. The harder levels generally have a strategy that you need to discover and then flawlessly execute. Like the aforementioned first boss level I got to--once I figured out the pattern I needed to follow in order to get all the doors closed without dying, it was just a matter of executing the strategy without making any stupid mistakes (mis-timed jumps, etc.).

In any case, Hotel Mario is highly recommended by me to anyone insane enough to still own and play a CD-i. :)

Nice clean system, already up to 9 games out the gate. 3 are new in box, 1 (Syndicate) is still sealed in shrinkwrap, 1 is CIB (Kasumi Ninja, although the box is rough), and 4 loose carts. Also came with a standard controller, the official RF adapter and a custom A/V output cable. Not a bad deal for $80 shipped.

As for how the games play, it's a mixed bag. I was actually a bit underwhelmed by Tempest 2000, given how it's always hyped as being the Jaguar's one great original game. Raiden is a pretty good port of the arcade original. Flashback compares favorably to the PC version (only other version I've played). Kasumi Ninja is crap, of course. Super Burnout is basically Hang-On with weak controls. Iron Soldier is sluggish and just not that fun. Hover Strike is sloooowwww, although the texture mapped polygons do look pretty good. I've yet to try Fight for Life (although my hopes are not high as it looks similar to the notoriously bad FX Fighter (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQFgjILp9cY)), and I can't bring myself to crack the seal on Syndicate, even though I know it's not a valuable game, even as a sealed MIB. (Stupid OCD tendencies.)

All in all, it's easy to understand why the Jaguar failed. While it compared favorably to the capabilities of the SNES and Genesis which were dominating the market when it was released, it followed the vastly superior 3DO, and in less than a year was competing against both the Sega Saturn and the original PlayStation, both of which were light-years beyond the meager kitty box's technology. Still, it's a fun system to play around with and is surprisingly affordable to collect for, as CIB and NIB games (at least the commons) are still relatively abundant and cheap. That being said, I imagine my CD-i is going to see more playtime than the Jaggie going forward.

I played a bunch of Jaguar games for my retrospective I did last year, and overall I enjoyed the console...but it's very clear why it never stood a chance.

I was needing a mouse for my CD-i in order to better play the "gun" games, as the D-pad just wasn't cutting it. Luckily, I found a seller just up the road from me in Nashville who was selling brand new units (what collectors call "NOS", or "New Old Stock") of the CD-i mouse. It's a pretty standard mouse, but the mousepad it comes with is metallic and rigid, which makes it really handy for using away from a desk (like, across a chair arm or on the floor). It's sort of like the mousepad that comes with Mario Paint, only this one is much higher quality. And it's definitely cool to have a brand new one. Almost like travelling back in time to the Radio Shack at Hickory Hollow Mall circa. 1991. :)

Well you mentioned early on in this thread that you gave away and/or sold a bunch of this stuff and that you're currently in the process of re-acquiring those items that you associate with happy memories.

That really resonated with me when I first read it, and it's been my guiding philosophy towards collecting, lo these past several months. I don't pick stuff up "just to pick stuff up". As I said in an earlier post, it has to be either something I had, something my friends had, or something I always wanted. The only exception is when I run across something that I know is a fantastic buy, in which case I'll pick it up and likely use it for trade bait somewhere down the line.

That being said, I'm sure you still find some thrill in putting stuff up here for all of us to "ooh" and "ahh" over. It's almost like when, as kids, we pull out our latest, shiniest toy that we were the first one to get for all our friends to admire (and maybe envy, just a bit :) ).
