AtomicPC has posted news (http://newsletter.atomicmpc.com.au/cgi-bin16/DM/y/h5ia0T8spk0g5l0K5mF0EB) that starting on June 22nd Blizzard opens the doors to World of Warcraft character transfers.

Starting today, Blizzard will allow players of its popular World of Warcraft massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) to transfer character between realms - a feature long sought after by players and a very welcome addition.

In order to transfer, players must make sure their character's mailbox is empty and that no mail is incoming, their auctions are completed and they cannot be the leader of a guild. Characters of level 10 or less cannot be transferred, and characters carrying large amounts of gold cannot move either. This is to prevent 'gold farmers' from spreading to new servers or servers with developing economies and upsetting the normal processes that occur with new server growth.
The gold limits are as follows:
Level 10-30: 300 gold limit
Level 31-50: 1000 gold limit
Level 51+: 5000 gold limit

Dear sweet God, who has 5000 gold? I bought my epic mount after like a year of saving and after purchasing, floated around the 150g mark. Jeez.

Who has 5000 gold? Um, gold farmers... and what's to stop them from moving 10 characters with 50,000 gold? That should be enough to "upset" the normal processes.

A player in the guild im in on the lightbringer server has 10000g+
I can make a shield on my warrior that sells for 3000g and they are pretty easy to make mats wise but u have to be exalted with CC

Fuck you Blizzard!

FUCK

YOU

After wanting this feature for an insanely long period of time, you finally implement it when I loose all interest in your game. Thanks tons.

From the link:
"We have been advised by Blizzard to remove the story that you have linked to.

The Australian Vivendi office had previously given us the OK to publish the information, we published the story on that basis in good faith.

Blizzard and Vivendi has since apologised for the incorrect embargo information given to us yesterday.

The story will return at a later date."

I'm guessing there is going to be some sort of fee involved in doing this.

Oooh I'd better get to transfer my old mage.

Anyone have the entire post? Seems like Blizzard had them remove it.

I wish it was free. As it would make LAN parties much more amusing, as at MPCon it seemed that there were at least 40 people playing WoWs the whole time. Now lets say they could all move onto one server for a couple days, just to have fun.

Even though I know it will never be that cool, as Blizzard insists that each server should be treated unique, even if they are not.

Well is it even true since they had to take it off? It shouldnt cost much or anythign at all there should just be limitations beyond what was said.

I have multiple low level characters I would move to a new server and keep playing. But I dont care to with the same retarded people on my server. This is why it should be free...

Hmm...what to do with my lvl 60 guildless Priest. Do I keep him on Ner'zhul, or transfer him to a server with a guild that needs his expert raiding (i.e., healing) skills and is less congested?

Soon, every EA member will be able to transfer to a single server to form a formidable guild. :)

About fucking time. And 5000g limit? Hah, you can get around that with high priced items you can sell on the new server.

The story is down, Australian Vivendi authorized it but Blizzard complained.

Yeah, this is too little too late, even if true. I really wish they'd had this a lot earlier, because community fragmentation was one of the most annoying things about WoW. I would've gotten back into the game with friends on different servers if it didn't mean a complete reroll.

A necessary feature, but they really missed the period in the game's cycle when it would've done the most good.

I think realm transfers would take a bit of fun out of the game. The most fun I ever had in WoW was in the months after it was released, when everyone was still figuring everything out (When Ragnaros was killed for the first time all I could think was INCONCEIVABLE!). Even way later when I started up my subscription for the second time it was awesome to start over on a new server in a newly formed guild and level up together. Certain people and guilds start to stand out above the rest, and while each server is technically "the same," each one sort of gets it's own flavor because of whatever happens while it grows up. A bunch of people importing their level 60s from other servers, or simply leaving the server for others, would completely ruin this experience in my opinion. I can see why people like the idea of transfers, as it would make it SO MUCH easier to play with friends established on other servers, as well as saving people from some of the terrible level grinding to 60 on a rerolled character, but overall I don't dig the idea.

With all that being said, it would make sense to me that whenever realm transfers are implemented that they will be limited in some way (i.e. not allowing transfers to brand new servers or something like that, or making it cost some money so people would have to make a careful decision as to whether they want to transfer characters), but since I quit the game recently I guess I really shouldn't care at all anyways. :D

Edit: Ah, and as soon as I post, a more well-informed member of EA posts a message that indicates paying for transfers as well as transfer restrictions! Need to refesh the thread before I post next time, dammit! :o

Hmm, there's only 8 character slots, not 10 as I recall.

Nope. 10 slots.

Was there always 10, or do I need to take my meds?

I think it's a recent change. I must have missed the announcement though. I do seem to remember hitting an 8 player limit quite a while ago (I get lazy about wiping inactive characters), but a couple of weeks ago I went to ten on one of the new Oceanic realms (boredom).

Yup. It's basically for the addicts with level 60s who want to join their friend's guild on another server. It's worth 25 bucks not to have to level the same character to 60, for some people.

DeadlyDonkey
06-22-2006, 01:31 AM
25 bucks is 2 months of subscription. About the time it would take to level another char to 60 with your friend, but without the effort. And that's not including any epic / raiding gear you've picked up.

25 bucks keeps it sensible. It prevents people "ninja-looting" all of a guild's bank (for example) then stealth-commandoing everything they stole to another realm. Well, it doesn't stop them, but 25 dollar charge makes it far less attractive to the average idiot teenager with an attention complex.

I have about 2000g liquid (was 3200 when I was all liquid), and ~3750g invested (ie 60 nexus crystals and assorted other goods that I slowly sell off when the AH is low on them and I can make a profit off them). Nearly 6000 in total.

Gold falls from the sky in WoW, especially if you pay attention to which items are going to be worth more in upcoming patches.

I cancelled my account a few months ago while waiting for transfers, and now I'm free of my addiction and this won't bring me back. Too little too late :P

Am I the only oldschool EQ1 player who avoided WoW, and keeps shaking his head in disbelief when I see Blizzard pull the same FUCK YOU tactics that VI and SOE pulled?

I mean, come on people, there's a precedent for all this shit. Character transfers, paying a fee to rename your character, all of it.

It sucks to see "new" MMO people's hopes and dreams get shat on just like everyone else's, but perhaps this is just the way it goes.

I don't play anymore, but it seems reasonable to me to charge money. Why? As someone mentioned: Fucktards who have terrible reputations for ninjalooting switching to a new server where

A: They will continue to ninjaloot
B: escape their blackballed reputation and start new (for good)

As someone with a regular job, $25 covers the tediousness of gathering up my crap and bringing it someplace new: and I think it's reasonable enough to stop quite a number of fucktards from escaping their server.

And then re-up like the other million people who cancelled?

They need to chenge the gold transfer amount. 100 gold max for everyone. If they have that much gold (in the 1000's), then they can make it again. The gold farmers are going to have a field day with this.

Of course you gotta wonder if that was all smoke and mirrors considering recent behavior.

This is actually cheaper than expected, doesn't EQ (live or 2 I can't remember) charge 100 something for transfers? Rolling another character is always a less hassle to me, but I have a friend that's been waiting for this, and our bet was 50 +.

QFT. I'll see you back in WoW when the expansion is launched. I'll probably roll on a new server when that happens.

the original everquest had the introduction of the Legends service ... which was around $60 a month (because you had to pay for the service in addition to your Station account).

edit: In all honesty, I'm weighing this seriously. If they will allow me to move my character from one of the newer realms to a more established realm, I'll do it in a second and won't look twice.

Roc Ingersol
06-22-2006, 11:44 AM
The big problem I have with transfers is that it's much too expensive for a whole guild to be able to flip servers.

So people are only going to move in ones and twos, and it won't make a damn spot of difference to server population problems.
