MegaTexture is a designed to eliminate repeating textures over an environment. The original version of the Doom 3 engine was criticized over its perceived inability to handle landscapes and large outdoor areas. The MegaTexture technology addresses this issue by introducing a means to create expansive outdoor scenes. By painting a single massive texture (About 32000x32000 pixels, or 1 gigapixel) covering the entire polygon map and highly detailed terrain, the desired effects can be achieved. The MegaTexture can also store physical information about the terrain such as the amount of traction in certain areas or indicate what sound effect should be played when walking over specific terrain types on the map. i.e. walking on rock will sound different from walking on grass. We don't allow images in .sig files and posting the same icon in every post is a blatent attempt to get around the no images in .sig files rule.

I also have a very low tolerance for animated .gif files to begin with and the fact that people abuse them - as you have been doing - is why people aren't allowed to even have a forum avatar.

So, next time someone asks why a site called Evil Avatar doesn't allow people to have a Forum Avatar, I'm going to blame you.

Back OT: this shot is interesting because it looks like a departure from the standard "battlefield" type maps. I'm going to be interested to see what the mix of maps is like on this game.

I personally think the screenshot looks like ass. They're trying to show off a battlefield game but they show off an alleyway the width of my bedroom walk in closet. It's also a fisheye bullshit shot. Look at the size of that flaming barrel - come on.

I stand by my comments in the previous BF2142 thread. If "id" had half a brain they'd have purchased the rights to the Unreal engine or even lease the Star Wars Battlefront engine instead of trying to manage with the Doom 3 engine. The Doom 3 engine is such a joke that Carmack had to "invent" Megatextures. The developers behind ET:QW could make a good game but I'm telling you guys this one isn't going to make it compared to BF2142. I've already offered to put money down on a bet with Draft on it. Come on Draft, put some money down on those fancy Megatextures. Graphics are the KEY to good gameplay.

It's also funny to watch you trash that screenshot. "Oh boy it's not a big wide empty space with a tree here or there. Dude that's totally limited compared to Battlefield." NEWSFLASH- enemy territory never was and never tried to be Battlefield. It's an entirely different type of game, with an entirely different style. The only thing they have in common is being online, and being set in the future. You saying, "They're trying to show off a battlefield game" shows you don't know one thing about enemy territory or how it plays, and you should probably just run along and play some more Battlefield: Same Gameplay, Different Time Period.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territories was some of the finest multiplayer gaming I have ever experienced. It and the woefully unplayed Unreal 2 XMP are the twin pillars of online multiplayer that all the Counterstrikes and Team Fortresses of the world should aspire to. The fact that the living gods who graced us with W:ET have been given a huge budget and real resources to create the sequel fills me with gaming juice I haven't felt since Jedi Knight 2.

Haters fuck off and die. Quake Wars is coming.

You just became an instant friend for mentioning XMP. XMP was amazing and it sucks that it didnt get much press or more people as it should have. I was never so excited and enthralled with an MP game like XMP since the original QWTF.

Althought I played TFC for a looooong time. I've since then stopped playing anything remotely resembling either of these games. CS:S and DOD:S are fun but they dont have that sort of range that the TF or XMP series seem to have or promise.

Settle, settle. I don't bother jumping all over things once conventional wisdom has turned on them. If many more people start bitching about QW screens, I might start defending clip mapping. It's just a technique with tradeoffs.

We'd both like this to be a good game, so stay focused on that. I've been out of online FPS for a while, and some more innovative titles would be welcome.

I would much rather see them make a MAINSTREAM upgrade to U2XMP / UTXMP that people could buy and play than Quake Wars. Even then they'd be fucked on the engine though.

What's with all the graphics mashing? Doesn't anybody play games anymore? I gotta agree with Draft about Quake Wars but not because of the graphics. It great and all, but gameplay is what Quake Wars is about.

Everyone compares apples and oranges just because they're fruits. Just because BF2142 and ETQW take place in the future, have vehicles and is multiplayer doesnt mean they are anything alike. The game mechanics to ETQW is WolfET. It's all about teamwork, everybody has a role to do to achieve the goal. Hasn't anybody played WolfET?
