I'm just in the planning phase of my new rig, and I was looking at 1TB hard drives. Seagate seems consistently to be about $10 bucks or so cheaper for 7200 RPM drives, but people seem to swear by the WD drives. Can anyone explain why they are superior?

Ultimately, it boils down to reliability and reputation. Western Digital hard drives tend to be extremely reliable, although Seagate does make some solid stuff. Anything with moving parts can and will eventually fail, but WD drives can take a beating. I've never had problems with their stuff. Folks swear by WD drives for a reason.

I will recommend considering a solid state drive, though. No moving parts means a significantly lower chance of the thing crapping out on you. They're more expensive...but it's worth it, especially for things that are accessed regularly like an OS.

Just something to consider!

I've had bot of them fail on me so screw them both. Yeah it can happen to any brand but still... Anyways I would vote for Hitachi I have not seen one fail yet.

heh Seagate and WD are the most popular, but I've had drives from both fail on me. You'd be better off by comparing specific model revisions. You'll have to accept that regardless of who you pick, there's still a chance of getting a defective drive.

The samsung (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007603%2050001077&IsNodeId=1&name=SAMSUNG) drive I originally built this computer with (7 years ago) is still running strong though, so I went to them (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185) when my seagate secondary drive failed a few months back. The perspective is completely subjective.

WD is $10 more because they do more marketing, guess who pays for that, not them.

All name brand platters are a pretty safe bet these days, and of course stand the same tiny chance that you'll get a lemon. Go with any name brand and judge by the meaningful specs.

Performance between the two is not really a matter of brand, but a matter of model.

I'm using a combination of Seagate and WD HD's in this machine, but I use WD "black" harddrives for programs and then I'm using WD "green" and Seagate "Low power" harddrives for media.

Seagate, only Barracudas and higher, the rest are shit. Western Digital made hard drives for IBM all through the good old days of "Death" Star drives, and after giving them one last chance with a lackluster raptor, I'm done with WD. At least mentioning WD won't get you a punch in the face, like those Maxtor douches.

All of my desktops in the last 4 years have exclusively contained WD-Black drives and I haven't had a single failure or issue.

Both Seagate and WD have top reputations, almost indistinguishable from the other. I give a slight edge to WD in my own experience, which isn't much.

And I have to say Samsung has never failed me. For my new Rig I am getting a Spinpoint F3 for my Data drive, and probably going to get an SSD for a boot drive. Prices are really starting to get better for SSDs now.

I have a mixture of WD Black/Green drives in my PC. The green drive (2TB) stores my archived music that I have in FLAC format, and the black drive (1tb) is the workhorse of the machine, running my OS and my game partitions. The next PC I plan on building (hopefully in the next month or so pending my wife's approval of it) will contain a SSD and probably a couple Samsung drives.

But I have had a WD drive fail on me, and a couple Seagate external drives fail on me.

I have 8 1tb baracuda's in my server. Raid 6 and never an issue. Knock on wood

There's no such thing as a drive that doesn't fail. Just buy name-brand. Either of these you can't go wrong.

WD hands down!

Great drives and KILLER support. If a drive goes bad they send you a NEW one made within the last couple of months..

I have sent in 2 RMA drives that were bad and WD ended up sending me the newest 64mb Black drives..

WICKED SICK!!
