Here's the box art for the US release of Gothic 3.

I like the dvd box of Gothic 1 (http://pics.rollenspiel-shop.de/getimg.php?ARTNO=DTP0001&MODE=ORIG), international version. Short of the skeletal mask, this box is rather plain.

I think it's pretty classy, actually. Like an old book of legends waiting to be read.

It looks a lot like the cover of oblivion, IMO.

Fall, like all the other games. It's gonna be a swamped Christmas again.
Like an old book of legends waiting to be read.
How do you like the international box with the worn edges? That skeletal mask is Gothic, the stretched out 3 just doesn't have that snap to it :p

only similiarity i see to the OB box is the stony-type font, but then again Gothic had that font before oblivion so...
Anyway, yeh, box looks neat and classy. This game is going to kick so much ass.

Let me ease your fear: It's okay to comment honestly, one way or the other, and not be seen as being dismissive of the whole.
That's your right, assuming your comment is reasonable and you're not screaming at your minitor.

I've found screaming at one's minitor only makes it more likely to gore you, but it's your ass... :D
Box looks cool. I'm eager to examine it's contents while installing the game.
and it looks like mightbe forgot to crop his image before saving...

Much love to painfully generic titles.

And the game doesn't even contain anything gothic. Or am I wrong?
(Not talking about modern goth crap, I mean the real goths of old times.)

The word 'gothic' has many meanings, but I think this game is best described by these two:
1. Of or relating to the Middle Ages; medieval.
2. Of or relating to a style of fiction that emphasizes the grotesque, mysterious, and desolate.

Man, I can't wait for this game. I've beat g2 several times, and had a great experience every time. The cover looks classic.

I've never played a Gothic game, but I'm a huge fan of RPGs like Fallout 1 n' 2, Oblivion, Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale, NWN, etc. What is this game like? Is it more action or more stat-driven? Is it deep (Fallout 2 RPG system) or stream-lined (Final Fantasy RPG system)?
I watched some high-res gameplay movies at gamespot, very sharp looking title, maybe even nicer than Oblivion? Which itself blew me away.

Gothic never realy interested me. I'm all for something that departs from Tolkien in fantasy setting, but serioussely, Dinosaurs? Don't realy like the art direction, and I played Morrowind far more than Gothic 2. Gothic just seems sorta cheap somehow, like its trying to combine TES with a Bioware style game (I.E. Kotor) but never realy ends up pulling either off.

I don't think Gothic is graphically better than Oblivion on a purely technical basis, but moreso on a style basis. Oblivion's design and art style never really grabbed me.

To be a legend, you have to have a name, or at the very least a title.

Oblivion is, to me, a LOT like Gothic 2 was, only a bit bigger. They are both stat driven, though gothic stats are much more dumbed down, and they both have multple quests and a crap ton of places to go. Gothic is maybe a little more actiony, maybe, and the storyline is a deeper, I think. But otherwise, there isn't a ton of difference.
I couldnt get in to Gothic II. It reminded me of Dungeon Lords, which was a horrid, awful game.
GothicII had a steep learning curve and you had to invest alot of time before you really "got it". I liked it a bit at first, but REALLY liked it, when you leave the town and go adventuring for the first time. Classic stuff.

I enjoyed Gothic 1 but was one of those who just didn't get into Gothic 2. I'll have to pick up the super amazing gold edition at some point.

Both Gothic games (but especially 2) were superior to Morrowind and Oblivion in almost every concievable way. Oblivion might have had technically "Better" grahpics, but Gothic just oozed style and had some of the best outdoor vistas ever, and you could actually see them in full glory whilst still getting 30-60fps.
Gothic 2 also had multiple ways to complete quests, actual dialogs, superior AI schedules, interesting NPCs, a more interesting game world (all oblivion had was dungeons and towns, that's it) and most of all, darn good roleplaying. It was fun being a theify character, and working for the militia to gain info for the thieve's guild and mercenaries.
Only downside is the late late endgame which becomes a boring dungeon crawl, and the controls could be a bit better. People who bitch and refuse to play the game because of the controls are kinda silly, though. They're not that bad and take maybe 5 minutes to learn.

One of my favorite things about this series is the strange environments. Personally, I'm bored with the "by the book" fantasy rpg's you're talking about. Gothic I has a lot of original content that you don't see in other rpg's and that's what makes it interesting.
Gothic was the first and only rpg that ever made me feel like I was part of the game world... and I've played them all. So to each his own.
Frankly, I thought the fallout series was quite boring and drab. And Morrowind... I couldn't even get halfway through it without getting bored to death. So like I said, to each his own. :p
One thing I really liked about Gothic was that it wasn't too open-ended. It had a nice flow to it that moved you through the game at the perfect pace. Morrowind and Oblivion are way too open-ended for my taste. Althoug I like Oblivion much better than Morrowind.
