The price of the bundle is £549.99 (!) which exchanges to 805 Euros (!!), which exchanges to $1015 (!!!).
PS3 is the most advanced computer system that serves as a platform to enjoy next generation computer entertainment contents in the home, realized through the combination of Cell and RSX processors, in addition to the playability of a vast catalog of PlayStation and PlayStation 2 software titles.
And a bolded warning from the preorder site:
Due to an expected European shortage of the PS3, we are unable to guarantee delivery of your PS3 before Christmas. All pre-orders will be fulfilled on a first come, first served basis and game titles in this package may be changed, subject to availability.
You can preorder your PS3 right here (http://www.play.com/Games/PlayStation3/4-/1032615/-/Product.html?searchstring=PS3).

Hey it's only a THOUSAND dollars. Everyone has that to spend on games. Its only a few hundred away from my mortgage, but I dont need a house after the Playstation 3 comes out, I can live in its enormous casing.
In all honesty, a thousand dollars is unforgivable. That doesn't even include a second controller or warranty.
No wonder developers are leaving PS3.

Every time I think back to the 360 bundles, my wallet crys. lol Maybe if I start saving now, I can get the money together for a PS3 with everything I need accessory-wise. But I think my best bet is to just wait for the first price drop like I did last time with the PS2. Between my 360 and my PC, I think I can keep busy enough to not notice that I don't have a PS3. Maybe....

I don't see what all the fuss is about. We already knew that the PS3 is going to cost £425 (AFAIK), which as we already know, is more expensive than in the US.
Games cost around £50 (going by 360 high-street prices), so the price for console is £425 + £150 for 3 games (some games will probably be cheaper though). So that bundle deal is spot on.

Yeah I'm confused, I thought the listed price for the PS3 alone in Europe was going to be £499 or £599. If that's the case, then it is a deal for them. I'm not saying the base price isn't ridiculously high, but not quite the way people are viewing it.

Why even rush out to buy one at that price? By that time, the 360 should have a nice list of available games and the price may even be lower. I'd say when the PS3 launches, that will be the time to buy a 360. ;)

Nice list of available games, yes, lower price for the console, probably not. MS has said they are happy with their pricing model after E3 with what Sony is asking for the PS3. A pity really. Had the PS3 cost less (the low-end model for $399) MS probably would've lowered the premium price by $100 come Christmas, thus a decent priced PS3 and a cheaper Xbox 360. But alas, it wasn't meant to be.

The UK always had stupidly high prices for just about everything. from what I understand the average game has about the same face price as it would in North America: $50-60, but it's in pounds, which is almost worth double: $100-120. 300 bucks = 5-6 games here or 3 games in the UK.
Sucks to be them. ;)
I've got relations in France, getting photos developed (film, not digital) is about $30 a roll. Don't ask me why.

Well, games are typically about £35 from Amazon.co.uk and Play.com, which isn't too bad, but elsewhere they can go right up to £50, yeah. I think the problem with our higher prices is split between abusive companies and our slightly higher taxes (due to our smaller population).

I read $1000 and said to myself, "WTF?". I then realized it is a conversion of crazy UK cash. They always pay out the butt more than we do. I think the title needs to be changed, its misleading. Granted, a preorder for the "good" system and 3 games is $780 or so, which is still crazy, its not going to be a grand.

06-16-2006, 09:34 AM
Ok so wait.. the PS3 is listed at 425 pounds right? And this is 550 pounds. That's 125 pounds for the 3 games which is less than the typical 50 pounds per game. Granted they may be completely ridiculous games to package in a bundle, but if you consider the average screwed prices that the Europeans put up with anyway, it's not as bad as folks make it out to be.
Basically, translated to American prices, this is really going to be $600 for the premium PS3 and then $125 - $150 for the 3 games, thus $750, not $1000.
Is $750 too much? Hell yes it is. I don't even know why the Europeans put up with those inflated prices :P

Whatever our opinions, anyone want to bet against Sony selling EVERY available console for the first several months at least? I'm no Sony fanbody or Sony hater...I just know that there are plenty of people out there with enough money (or stupidity, if they're not well enough off) to buy the thing regardless of the price.
AND...retailers have those people by the ba**s, so package deals over a grand will be quite common, I'm sure...even in the States.

Whether gouging or not will occur isn't indicated by this post though. The seller is selling the package for a discount over the seperate purchase price of the components.
As stated by others, the conversion of this price in pounds to US dollars is misleading.
Consoles, whether PS, Xbox or Wii cost more in England. WITHOUT any talk of gouging.
In fact, as your own link demonstrates, this price isn't a Sony specific thing at all. Which once again, the rabid EA anti-sony readers keep missing (not saying that you are one of said rabid readers).

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I just don't imagine his intent was to honestly provide people with a place to pre-order a PS3 with lines like:
"A thousand bucks... holy crap... I'm speechless."
I'll be getting a PS3 near launch hopefully, not this bundle though coz the games arent right.

No I was being serious.. We normally have to pay prices like this in the UK compared to America. I saved up £1000 to put towards X360 and PS3 last September. £549.99 for PS3 with 60GB is good for a Bundle of 3 games, my PS2 was £400, my PSP bundle was £400 .. a 360 with 3 games is around £430..
I think the Title of this thread is misleading, because it wont be $1015 in the US, this is the UK Price, the Exchange rate does not normally apply. If its £549 in the UK then it is most likely going to be around $600 in the US, unless you get shafted like we normally do for a change.
ruceree88
06-16-2006, 03:00 PM
Well, even considering the UK’s import taxes or whatever it will still hover around that price when it drops here.
System $599
Second controller $40-50
Game $50-60
Game $50-60
Anything else?? $$$??
Tax %3-9 minus if you live in a state with no sales tax.
I come to a grand total of $868.14 calculating my state tax. I added another game in just for fun.
So the question to ask myself….do I want this thing? Or do I want to continue to hold off and treat myself to a nice computer upgrade sometime next year? I wonder which one ill choose.

The Xbox 360 got a price drop the day the PS3's price was announced, just by virtue of the fact that the Xbox 360 isn't the most expensive console. Coupple that with the severe shortages Sony will experience this fall and you'll see no Xbox 360 price drop.

That's exactly what I did with the last generation; I was a latecomer to the Xbox community, mainly to have a chance to play against my brother via Live. I got my system for under $200 with a game and extra controller included.
This generation I was, depending on your perspective, either a fool or a real gaming enthusiast, as I bought a 360 as soon as I could get my hands on one :) And, I'm looking forward to getting a Wii asap.
I was out of gaming for a while (since SNES, frankly) and have come back over the past five years big time...about 100 games (PC, Xbox, 360, and even N64 on the used market). Better than drinking or drugging, eh?

The horse has died, then been resurrected, then it died again, then the corpse was molested, then it was raised as a horse zombie, then the unlife was pounded out of it, then the corpse was molested again. At this point the people who are continuing to beat on it are doing their best to avoid getting splashed with putrefying horse flesh.

You are so right, that IS a better investment. Why don't we think of some other things we can get... how about $1000 worth of food, or how about donating money to a charity, or we could buy some seeds and plant trees.Everything you listed would make the world a better place than buying a game console would. No arguments here.
Here's another thing you can do for less than $1000 (http://www.carnival.com//CMS/Static_Templates/Promos/top_deals.aspx?ciid=719&cachename=advertising&PageGroupId=12&url=/CMS/Static_Templates/Promos/top_deals.aspx).

correct!, Just like Super Expensive CARS!!! there is Always enough people to buy it!-
And wasnt the 360 over $1000 on ebay, And people sTILL bought it!!
You are right. Some people will buy super expensive cars. Next time you are out on the road, look around you. What are the most popular cars? The super expensive ones?
The point of a game console isn't to be an exclusive item. It is supposed to be an inclusive item.
If a console is expensive, fewer people will buy it.
The fewer people who buy it, the less of an install base it gets.
The less of an install base it has, the fewer developers make games for the system.
The fewer games the system has, the less value it has as a game system.
The less value the system has, the more of a rip-off the higher price tag is.
The big difference with game systems and cars is that a car can run on regular gasoline on regular roads. Anywhere you can drive your Toyota Camry, I can drive my Porshe. Not so with game systems. A game system is only as good as the games available for it. What good is a super car that you can only drive on special roads?

LOL! I wondered what happened to the Nintendogs when you ignored them. Now I know they get a puppy keyboard and show up on Evil Avatar. :)
No hard feelings. Just messing around. :D

correct :) This is a good example of why we are not shocked with the price of the PS3.. because we have always had to pay these kind of prices compared to the US.
Its not that expansive you know. Considering how solid and reliable ps2 are. I mean, do you know someone who bought a ps2 and had to replace it? Do you know someone who paid a lot for a ps2 that soon turned to be defective? I SURE DONT !
So yeah, Id pay 1000 for that promess of reliability and RAW POWER. I will sell my computer for 30 dollars, cause I won't need it anymore anyway. Thank you sony, for shining your holy light on me. I just think most people dont realize they can sell their pc for a discount. Idiots.

Thats been on the Play website for sometime. I buy things from play.com quite alot, their a really good online retailer. Very good prices and always good with their deliveries so far.
But theres no way in hell im paying £550 for a PS3. It's just not going to happen.

Good point, As the different prices in each country seems to be debated regulary on this site, prehaps someone could list average wage, cost of living etc for each country to put things in perspective.
$400 is full pay for a 38 hour week for alot of people over here.

No i work a 45+ hour week and get paid more too (salary)
A standard working week is 38 hours (Retail Award)
It pays around $470 after tax (sorry my $400 was a slight exageration, i'm learning from Zeal & Reanimated), thats not including any sunday loading.
