News4Gamers (http://www.news4gamers.com/xbox360/News-1032.aspx) has 24 new screenshots of a video of Gears of War.
Hard to get an accurate idea how they really look because it's so washed out.
Thanks CaptStu for the tip.

I can't get over those godawful camera angles. The game looks really pretty, but jesus christ, you've got this bizarre 3/4 angle shot of the side of your own head. When the fuck is that ever going to help you?

These screens look like they are from the multiplayer (probably photos taken of the E3 booth by the look of it). I guess that rule was lifted in the multi side in order to balance the Loucusts and humans. I mean no one would want to play as the Locusts if any light rendered them useless.
Also, I have not heard that the big humanoid guys are affected by light. I thought that it was the smaller bug type ones. But I might be wrong.
And these screens are useless. They look like they were taken by a phone camera.

It probably (?) will hit the PC later in Vista's lifetime but for now it is 360 exclusive. J Allard bumbled something about a PC version but Cliffy B quickly shot that rumour down.
They are so... ...blue, exept for the one that is red. aside from the blue thing, they look pretty good.

I think having a melee weapon would rock. Instead of capping someone point blank with a whimpy pistol you'll shred them instead. Forces players to make sure they're staying at a distance if they want to engage in fire-fights, otherwise, ZZZrrrZZRrrrtkarassshhhhh!!!

What is so appealing about a chainsaw?!? Sure, it was cool in Doom. Great. But if we're going for immersion, a semblence of realism... There are exactly zero chainsaws being used as offensive weapons in any modern military... and probably just about as much bayonet usage as well. If you have 30 rounds in the rifle, and it's already pointed at somebody's belly, you pull the trigger. If you are out of ammunition, your squadmate pulls his trigger.
It makes no sense and it's in there purely as a 'wow' factor ignoring that it makes no sense in war. Besides... from the gameplay footage I've seen, these enemies are able to take half a dozen plus bullets before they fall. They had to have had to put special code in there to make the enemies stand still while they're being chainsawed (again, from watching the gameplay videos) and that just strikes me as silly. Not to mention how impractical of a weapon a mini-chainsaw on your rifle would be... extra weight throwing the balance off, a fuel supply and it would get gummed up and stop working the first ligament you'd cut through.

So RE4 has a shity camera, therefore it's ok if other games do?
There's also a difference between bad camera ANGLE, which both have, and bad camera PLACEMENT, which is much, much worse in a FPS. If 1/3rd of my screen is my own characters BACK, something is wrong.

Actually this is great. Now I can actually see what's going on ON screen instead of looking at my characters ass.

I don't think they're going for any kind of "this is what real war is all about" of course, so I don't have a problem with it being in there on the rifle. You make good points but this game is over the top fun from all appearances and it seems like a natural fit while being a nice nod to the FPS legacy we all know and mostly love.

After seeing the chainsaw on the gun used on one of those enemies. I've had a boner for this game since.

Epic isnt going for realism. This game hardly resembles just that. No one is built like these characters, much less have gigantic "Warhammer 40k-like" suits on and jump around the way the do. This games art design is very stylized and revolves around gratuitious warfare and ultra-violence. Of course the chainsaw on the gun is for "wow factor" That's sort of the point.
I'm glad its not realistic in any form. This game screams exaggeration quite a bit.

You need to listen to CliffyB's interview on the Gaming Steve podcast.
I think some people will be very surprised as to how this game will be presented visually and cinematically. I think it'll be very innovative.
...but if you're expecting it to be a run and gun going into it like a typical shooter you'll be thrown off.

Most people found RE4's camera to be excellent. The point of a camera in that position is that you feel like you have an actual presence in the game because you're right on the shoulder of the character. RE4 executed that masterfully. It would be nice, though, if the game allowed for different camera angles. Can't make everyone happy.

I hate to be the one to tell you, but the enemies in this game... They don't really exist in the real world. The weapons also don't exist in the real world. Neither do the locations or vehicles. But let's go for realism!!!
fun > realism
I have to say, the blood looks awesome.

Alright, guys, point taken. Obviously I know that aliens and hulky supermen with magic rifles don't exist in the real world... but I got all pissy after watching that MTV special about their run-up to E3 when Cliffy B kept pushing so hard for dev time on this stupid chainsaw rather than focusing on the game freezes during explosions. Obviously with the development cycle being much longer to final product, this becomes kind of moot, but it seems so gimmicky. I'd really like the game to be so much fun that this little thing doesn't become the 'fun' part and deserve a disproportionate amount of focus and effort.
Hence, my hardline stance above. Plus, I love the sound of my own keys clicking.

From what I gather this is not going to be a run and gun game. You are mostly going to be moving from cover to cover doing peakaboo shooting and "hold the gun around the corner" type stuff. There is no way in hell that would work well in first person. The RE4 system was great, this appears to have a GRAW+RE4 type thing going on which I like.

RE4 was the complete opposite for me. I loved the camera thinking I was going to dislike it. My main gripe with RE4 was the response time in movement. But you got over that after awhile...sorta...okay, you learned to put up with it.
The camera in RE4 was a huge step above from the Code Veronica days. I've never liked the use of static camera design. I just hope for more fluidity in GoW when it comes to camera work and model movement.

Still sounds like you're the only one focusing on what is a tiny part of the game and making a bigger argument about it. It's just a weapons attachment. I think this game is offering a bit more than a weapon attachment and you allowed that video clip of Cliffy get to you too easily.

askheaves,
I haven't played it (and I'm guessing you haven't either), but from all the reviews I've read people absolutely loved the chainsaw.
As for it not being realistic. Gears is not meant to be a sim, so the chainsaw fits. It did get "E3 2006 Console Game of the Show" by Game Critics Awards Winners from E3 2006 (http://www.gamecriticsawards.com/win.html) , so you might be pleasantly surprised once you play it.
If you're looking for a sim, then likely Gears is not for you. As soon as you add in monster's and aliens, you've probably stepped a bit out of the "realistic and sim" category...
Good news though, you've got a ton of other options for realism in shooters.

Personally, I was rooting against the Microsoft woman on that MTV special that wanted the Chainsaw out... :D
I was thinking, OMG, she does not look like an FPS fan... I could be wrong, but she had the look of a ratings board member... Glad she eventually lost the argument.

Many of those screens are probably multiplayer. I'm guessing in single player that would be true.
I noticed the multiplayer screen with kills, deaths and revives. Nice.

It's a combination of the art style and the way it's being sold to me (games = for men GRR!) that leaves me cold I think. I just long for a day when video game aren't seen to start and end with monsters, elves, big guns and chainsaws. If this industry is ever to push into the mainstream (which it must in order to survive) then it must look to stop appeasing the hardcore and look to reach beyond the trappings of the past. Doom with bells on just doesn't cut it for me.

I enjoy all the things you listed so when something new comes along I guess I'll recognize it right away...I hope. Until that time I'll just keep playing what catches my eye y'know. Still, I'd like to recommend that you give GoW a spin before discounting it because you may just find that you like it after all. I have no problem supporting Epic Games with my hard earned cash.

Arf. At the very least Pinata is pushing the industry in new directions. It's distinctly post-Pokemon, but I'm interested to see the cross-media drive they're aiming for coming from the game first. Or... did Pokemon do that too? I remember noticing the card game and the TV series before the video game, but maybe that was just me.
And Montolio, I'm totally cool with people loving the elves and the space ships - I know I do. There's just a sense of the "same old same old" right at the start of this new generation and... I'd just love to see something fresh see similar air time.
