Irvine, CA, (March 11, 2011) – The most talked about PC game of PAX Prime is geared up to kick-ass a second time at the Penny Arcade Expo in Boston, this week. Red 5 Studios™ increased the size of Firefall’s booth for their east coast debut for one very important reason: to give gamers a chance to play with and against their friends for the first time anywhere in the world.

Developer Red 5 Studios will invite PAX East attendees to battle it out live in player versus player team matches on a brand new, never-before-seen corner of Firefall’s gorgeous world. An arena-like competitive gameplay map, Sunken Harbor, sets two armies into a bloody fight for dominance and for ranking on the built-in ladder system. Players will also get a chance to try three of the game’s battleframes, including the never-before-seen Recon battleframe.

Executive Producer, James Macauley, is thrilled about getting to show fans a deeply competitive side of Firefall. “We talked a lot about our open-world cooperative campaign at PAX in Seattle, and focused on our dynamic missions”, Macauley smiles. “Meanwhile, around the office, we were having a blast tearing into each other in our versus battlemaps. For PAX East, we’re really excited to share this with people outside of Red 5 for the first time and to let gamers feel the rush of army vs army combat in a fun, competitive arena. We really think they’re going to like the intense team-based action of Firefall and just how frantic battles can be.“

Firefall is set in a beautiful but devastating vision of earth’s future, where the last surviving humans cling together to fight back the lethal threat of a powerful force called the Melding, while resisting a mysterious bloodthirsty army, known as the Chosen, who is hell-bent on wiping out humanity. Red 5 Studios is currently accepting applications for the beta program of Firefall, scheduled to go public later this year. Joystiq gets in on the action with a Firefall preview (http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/12/firefall-preview/).

Players create a consistent character from the outset. Rather than using different character models for each class, players simply pick up a specific "Frame" when they spawn. You're essentially picking an outfit off the rack based on how you want to play. Additionally, Red 5 Studios' lead designer Scott Youngblood -- also the designer for the Tribes series -- informed me that each frame is customizable inside its class.

Each frame on display at PAX had three different abilities suited to their class. The medic, for example, had an area-effective healing ability, a supercharge beam and a defibrillator. Those abilities aren't set in stone, however. As players progress in the game and earn experience, new abilities -- and additional ability slots - can be earned. Thus, no class is set in stone, and players will be able to customize each class of frame as they see fit. Furthermore, players can unlock new weapons and modifiers for each weapon's alternate fire mode.

It's a battleframe.

It's this:

Which, in a few years, will probably look like this :P

In the game, basically the rest of the world's been knocked out, and only your area survived. As a result, the battleframes are adapted from dock-worker models, with weapons drawn from mining gear or security weapons.

Each battleframe has a specific usage-purpose. Thus, if you're in a security model, you're battle-centric. A healing-model is their idea of a mobile battlefield medic / ambulance. And they've just unveiled the Recon battleframe. We also expect a Robotics battleframe to be unveiled soon.

Firefall is reviving the FPS genre for me, and hopefully many other's who've burned out on the traditional offerings.

What is this Firefall you speak of? Will there be a low-res gimped version for the Wii? :D
