FiringSquad chats with Frozenbyte's Joel Kinnunen as he gives a post mortem on their recent top down sci-fi shooter Shadowgrounds. You can read the interview right here (http://www.firingsquad.com/games/shadowgrounds_interview/). Here is a snip:
FiringSquad: You also released two different demos for the game. Do you think the demos helped get more attention and how hard was it to make two demos of the game?
Joel Kinnunen: A lot of gamers have told us that they first tried the demo, and liked it so much that they bought the full game. I would say that demos have been vital to Shadowgrounds' success.
We released two demos because it simply gives a little more buzz for the game. There's really nothing else to that. :)
Making the demos wasn't hard at all - it took one day per demo basically. We spent some time on the end splash screen and made sure that the demos were incompatible with the full game but that's about it.
If you have a Steam account, this game is definately worth checking out
I ended up buying it. Not much depth there, but it's a fun shooter, and for 20 bucks, it provides plenty of enjoyment while it lasts.

I thought the demo was one of the better constructed demos I had seen. The game has a weapons upgrading system (which is done very by the way) by using a certain number of parts to upgrade the weapons as one sees fit. In the demo, they gave you a lot of the weapons and 100 parts very early in the game so that you could really get a feel for whether you were going to like the combat system. I really enojoyed this game much better than I enjoyed Doom 3, and for 1/3 of the cost? I call it a winner.

I actually just played the demo of this last weekend after finishing off HL2:Ep1 and poking around for something more to play. I was pretty impressed. Simple little game, but a surprising amount of fun. Good straight forward arcade style shooter. I'll probably pick it up in the future.
The only thing missing is some kind of multiplayer. Could have made the game perfect.

I could have sworn there was coop multiplayer available, was I mistaken?

It's there, but only with multiple people sitting in front of the same machine -- no INTERNET co-op. It's a great fluffy game, I downloaded it over the weekend. But the internet co-op would make it golden.

I downloaded the demo and it didn't seem that great. You can download alien swarm for free and it's a very similar game.
Alien swarm is also going to be out for source so I'd wait for that.
It's basically a total rip of Alien Swarm, which ripped off some old game I forget, which ripped off Aliens. I completed it and had some fun but it's a bit cheeky to basically copy a game which was announced as coming to Steam already and then get in before them.

I got it, fun game, always like the "Smash TV" style shooting control. Only problem I have had is sometimes I get the "Shadowgrounds.exe has caused..." and the game crashes to desktop. Normally I wouldn't get too worked up about it, but with it only saving between levels (which isn't a complaint), that crash had me redoing the second mission (rescue that military lady and scientist) 3 times.
Graphics are excellent, the shadows look great. Fun stuff.
