I took Baby Spig to see Cars and quite enjoyed it. Gorgeous animation and a lot of fun in-jokes tossed about willy nilly.

Of course, it also gave rise to this notable quote from Mrs. Spig.

"The only problem I had with the movie was that there were too many cars."

Sigh.

It was a good movie, but I think it ranks as one of the worst Pixar films I've seen. Which is funny, because even at Pixar's worst they make Hollywood's best look like feces.

PS: I read the book, which was only slightly better.

Who the hell is still going to see The Break-Up? I really do despair at the movie fan who can think of nothing else to blow their money on than that tripe! Donate your $10 (or whatever) to a worthy charity - you're cash will help someone and you'll have no need to feel despondent over lost time.

I think the entry for Da Vinci Code meant to be "$10.3/$189.0", not "$103/$189"--unless, of course, you're tallying up worldwide receipts in that first field, and only domestic US receipts in the second. :)

I watched My Name is Nobody and Wyatt Earp on DVD on Sunday night. My Name is Nobody is a Sergio Leone inspired western/comedy starring Terence Hill and Henry Fonda with music by Sergio Leone.

The music was awesome, classic Leone western stuff that makes the movie worth watching just for the music. The film was a lot different that I expected. It had some really comedic moments and other stuff that seemed more like a Leone western. Worth watching and owning, but a strange film.

Wyatt Earp was the Kevin Costner 3+ hour version that is a mini-series all its own. It was a great version of Earp's life without the glitz in Tombstone. I only paid $9.99 for the regular version of the DVD and it is a great one to own since you can just put it in and let it run and wait for the gunfights.

I'm not a huge Costner fan, but since he is about the only one making westerns (other than TV movies) these days you have to love his stuff anyway.

I think cars ranks among the best pixar movies put out. Toy Story was great but overrated, nemo had a great story but not mind blowing to me, cars had a good story but the visuals were absolutely amazing. Way above bugs life and above monsters inc and toy story, but quite even with the incredibles. Add in the fact that I am a car guy and it leans towards cars.

I finally saw it, too. Theater was almost half full, 2 PM on a Sunday. Popular movie. Anyway, I'd give it a B+. I was pleasantly surprised at how entertaining it was. Maybe I was expecting utter crap after reading a few reviews. Then again, it was a total waste of Ron Howard...

5. The Incredibles 2 (hopefully!)

Honestly though, I loved all the Pixar films, but the Incredibles just "worked for me" on so many levels, amazingly entertaining movie.

I liked Cars a lot. It was quite different from other Pixar movies. I'll admit that Cars dragged at points, but by the end I really cared about the characters.

My list probably goes something like this:

Incredibles
Toy Story
Toy Stroy 2
Cars
Monsters Inc.
Finding Nemo
A Bug's Life

Hard to say, though.

Because The Incredibles is their best movie in many people's opinion?

It's #2 on my list.

Interesting that everyone loved the Incredibles so much. I mean, I enjoyed it well enough, but I didn't get into it as much as I thought I would. I'd put it higher in their list of releases, but not the top, personally. For me, I really dug Toy Story 1 and Nemo.

As for this weekend's showings, I caught the Omen remake and thought it was reasonable. Faithful for the most part, though not terribly enthralling. For under two hours, it felt like it was significantly longer and I think they went way too far with the creepy kid thing. I didn't find him all that disturbing but it felt like they were just trying too hard. It's been a while, but wasn't Damien a pretty normal kid in the original?

Saw X3 on opening weekend and really liked it. Definitely worth your time to check it out if you're a fan and haven't seen it yet, in my opinion.

And I can't bring myself to see Crazy Tom in MI:3. I don't even remember the first two, but I remember not liking the second at all. Is it worth my time to catch a cheap showing somewhere?

MI:3 is so much better than MI:2 that I am going to start referring to it as MI:2. I would definitely see it, it is a true sequel to the first movie (which was pretty good).

Why isn't Praire Home Companion playing around me, goddamnit. Because there's no reason to see this movie in a theatre. Trust me. My girlfriend is a huge PHC fan (via her midwestern parents) and I went with her to see it last night. As I watched I thought that maybe I just didn't "get it" because I didn't listen to the show. Turns out she was just as confused as I was. The movie is incredibly awkward and mostly pointless. It stradles this weird surreal line of what is real versus what is not, and it doesn't handle it very well at all. Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin, Woody Harrelson, and John C. Reily are all absolutely fantastic in it, but they can't save the fact that the movie as a whole is a bit of a train wreck. Rent it, there's no rush.

I like The Incredibles well enough (it's more re-watchable than Toy Story, but I think Toy Story is a better one-off), but Mrs. Wad and I both love Monsters, Inc. The premise of it is too awesome.

I bet you're only saying Cars sucked because it wasn't as good as Pixar's other movies. Compared to the rest of the current lineup, it's heads and shoulders above.

I have not seen Cars yet, but I suppose I should. My list goes as follows:

1) Monsters Inc.
2) The Incredibles
3) Toy Story
4) Toy Story 2
5) Finding Nemo

I really didn't much like A Bug's Life, but it was decent.

As for other films, I still havent brought myself to go see Da Vinci Code. I've heard such mixed reviews, I'm not sure if I even want to see it. Some people love it, others think it's a horrendous flop. I will tell you that I hated MI:3. I disliked the second one, and the 3rd one was just so over the top. The only cool thing in it was Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Everything else is just kind of 'eh'. It's a DVD rental for sure. From the sound of it, the original Omen was better. Don't know why they remade that one anyway.

Da Vinci Code was paced horribly, in my opinion. For a beach read with some puzzle/suspense elements, the way it transistioned to the big screen was just awful. I think the whole movie felt rushed. It felt like it was saying, "Holy crap, I'm already 2.5 hours long, I can't dwell on anything," the entire time. Puzzles/clues were instantly solved/deciphered on screen as soon as they were presented, completely eliminating any of the reader/viewer involvement that may have been present in the book. It was disappointing for me because I enjoy a good adventure, and a little bit of time to do some guesswork of my own. Invariably our hero will make the logical leap and solve the puzzle, but damn.. Slow down and let me take it in for a second.

To sum up the acting: Magneto was great, Hanks and the female lead (I don't recall her name) weren't good, and everyone else was just 'eh.'

I went and saw Cars with thefamily, and I have to say it isn't one of Pixar's best, but it is still a great family flick, and definetly superior to almost everything else playing right now.

Two words: Open Range.

Damn.

Open Range has a pretty intense gunfight, probably one of the best I've ever seen in a western. I like the genre if it isn't too cheesy, I often wish for a few more well-made western films--and as much as people hate Costner's acting, he makes great movies in that genre.

As for Cars, I just think it'll be an enormous disappointment after The Incredibles. That movie was so good in every aspect that I'm nervous to see another Pixar movie and have their image tarnished--especially a movie that isn't shining on RottenTomatos as much as their other films have.

Open Range is worth sitting through if for nothing other than that gunfight. I was kind of bored with it but stuck it out as I'd heard good things about the showdown and was not disappointed.

It would be nice if more serious westerns were made. The ones like Open Range come by far too infrequently.

I stand by the fact that it was a fun movie. Maybe it was because I was watching it in a theater filled with kids and had my own kid there, but we had a blast. It is most definately not the next Incredibles or Monsters Inc. but it was a lot of fun regardless and as most people have said, Pixar at their worst is better than almost any other film from Hollywood at their best.

I'm surprised that everyone ranked Toy Story 2 below the first one. I thought the first was great, but I definitely enjoy the second one more. Oh well...

The trailer for the next Pixar flick is already out. It looks pretty silly to me, but hopefully it ends up being as good as most of their other flicks. It's called Ratatouille for those who are interested in checking it out on Quicktime.

Yeah, I watched the preview on the Apple website - it looks promising. I worry about the frequency that Pixar's movies are now apparently being made, though.

I really enjoyed Cars, its myl favorite pixar movie besides Monsters Inc.

Paul Newman and Larry the Cable guy stole the show, which was surpising because I didn't know that Larry the Cable Guy could be entertaining.
