You can read the full article here (http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3204&Itemid=2).
Commodore International Corporation (CIC) has finalized a strategic partnership valued at 18 million euros ($22.7 million).
The Commodore Gaming licensing agreement is now official, solidifying the deal between CIC and The Content Factory, which was originally announced in September 2005. As a result, the CIC has acquired 49 percent of the shares in the new joint venture.
Commodore Gaming intends to become "a major worldwide player" in the mobile games and entertainment market, and will "actively identify and pursue relevant M&A [mergers and acquisition] targets."
Ben van Wijhe, president and CEO of CIC said, "Gaming is one of Commodore's key historic competences, and the conclusion of this agreement emphasizes Commodore's strategy to build on the strengths of the rich Commodore heritage."
Wow.

Are they making hardware or software? Or both?

I have a deep love an affection for the old commodore (Legend of Blacksilver anyone?), but this will be crap.

I loved my Commodore, but what does this mean? How much you wanna bet they will sell joysticks you can plug into your TV and play old games, or partner with Microsoft/Nintendo/Sony to sell the old games in a Virtual Console?

Funny, cause Commodore was never a major publisher, and as far as I know, they do not have a whole lot RELEVANT IP to license or use; other than the OSes for the Amiga and the Commodore itself.
They certainly do not own the rights of most of the games that were classics on either the C64 or on the Amiga.

So by "revamped," do they mean that this resurrection is essentially the same as that of Atari, i.e. just a brand name?

I would LOVE to see some old C64 games ported to my cell phone, PSP, DS or on XBOX Live Arcade. Some of the games are CLASSIC!
Last Ninja, Archon, Ultima IV, Bruce Lee, Impossible Mission, Maniac Manson, Elite, Great Gianna Sisters, H.E.R.O., California Games, Lords of Conquest, etc...etc...etc... All worth your time.

Guys, there was NOTHING preventing the porting (or new versions) of those games before this announcement. Commodore was a HARDWARE MAKER. They did not (and do not) own the rights for ANY of those games.
It is still unclear to me (other than using a famous brand name) what value does this "new" Commodore brings to the table.

Absolutely correct. As much as it breaks my heart to speak of C= in the past tense, they were a great company that made a great product back in the day. Now, this "resurrection" is little more than trying to leverage a somewhat known brand name to flog cell phone game sales.
The spirit has long ago departed the body... let the dead rest in peace.

I do miss the Commodore era though. Truly a golden moment in gaming.

Buggy boy, IO, Katakis, Bubble Bobble, Cal Games, Gianna sisters, Winter games.... Still so much fun.

Last I'd heard... AMIGA got bought by Compaq and is a subsidiary of them... back in the early 90's ... I don't know if CIC and Amiga are still the same company though.
All I know is that Amiga's are still very powerful and wildly popular in Europe.

Last Ninja, Turrican, Giana Sisters, Delta... man, good stuff. I feel like digging out the old c64 from the tomb that is my old closet, where the retired electronics go... WinVice makes it easy not to, however :) People are still coding the c64 to this day, demos popping up at the various parties (well Breakpoint at least, anyway)
The Amiga still rules too. In my heart at least. *sniff*

Wow. This warms my icy heart just a little.
I remember writing 5000 lines of Basic code so that I could make a big block (aka "meteor") scroll across the screen and shoot small blocks (aka "lasers") at it from my stationary medium sized block (aka "defense gun"). It was in the manual that came with the Vic 20, remember??
Summer Games FTW

Summer Games FTW
broken joysticks FTW.
I was either breaking my own joysticks playing summer/winter games, or I was at the arcade using the pencil trick and damned near breaking my fingers on the same games.

Turrican 2 was the finest platformer/shooter ever made and I will never hear a word otherwise. I can't believe SWIV outsold it.
