Some Random Sony PS3 Site (http://www.sony-ps3.ca/06112006/11/wii_instant_messenger_the_proof_is_in_the_patent) reports that Nintendo has filed a patent for a console instant messengering service. The messaging service client provides the user with an opportunity to create a user profile that is stored in the memory of network server…The user profile may contain any desired user-specific information including, but not limited to, an alias, first name, last name, gender, age, city, state, favorite game, favorite food, favorite sport, hobbies, recommended URL and notes…If desired, users may also be given an opportunity to indicate high scores and other accomplishments achieved on the game network or on stand-alone games.
Uh oh...does this penguin need to Achievement Whore on the Wii too? There is not enough time!

Direct click to URL on a console with a mouse type interface keyboard on the way, if not implimented virtually somehow
I think that Nintendo is making many key moves both forward and out of several different industries. They have a very talented first party development stockpile and by now a very siple and robust operating system.
Microst made a decision to cancel something very important in windows 98 ish http://www.michaelbuffington.com/archives/2003/07/multiple_mouse.html that thing was multiple mouse cursors and thus multiple people (the as yet unthought of concept that was Wii). *** killed off multiple cursors and burried the Wii's concept of advanced control (Multiple Input Multiple User Single Enviroments) in a crypt for no other reason than it was a kitchy extra easy to support brilliantly and simply!
But because most companys think destroying the market base of PCs completly in what was a bit of a sketchy time technology wise Y2K and all on the horizon.
Making stupidly powerful PCs yes even then able to be shared effectivley between multiple people would have been MADNESS. These days everyone thinks that a computer is Yours. Its a really posessive enviroment because it just got that way over time.
Over the next 5 years Nintendo will inadvertantly enter uncharted territory (wether it knows it or not) with a huge install base (go Opera?) and a shareable... MIMUSE system.
I look forward 5 years and think that our collective future selves will be carried around our neck lanyard USB style or WUSB as it will be with a approx 5-100 GB usb key more than enough to encapsulate our collective digital worlds (or at least the last few days if you are a filthy media whore like me) (Media includes games old and new and Movies Vids lalalala) Hands up everyone who has taken a movie to a friends place on a USB key?
Why cannot one theoretically torrent Via the Wii onto cards directly and in doing so do anything else they want as well.
The introduction of IM means they are dabbing a toe into an established market and don't want to get noticed. If I can Nimstant message people during games or just on my TV when when arrives I will stop having a reason to walk out of my lounge into my puter room.
I am ranting as usual great amazing news, I really wouldnt be surprised to here that specific non game software will be released for home users for PS3 and the Wii.
Key point
With a Wii Browser and Wii you could have 4 people browsing the Interwebs with finite control on 1 console.
Is it not a little bit rediculous that you probably have 4 or 5 people with computers in your house each doing little more PC intense than browse the Web?
Exciting times.
*EDIT*
As someone who has never used live I kinda see achievment whoring a bit like the Xbox version of Myspace. Just because you have access to a massive community of users doesnt mean you only offer whoring of achievments and Street Fighter 2 Hyper Fighting. Imagine a Wii little community for crazy party style 16 player games. Imagine Imagine Imagine.
Australia Playing Japan in World Cup right now Go Aussies =)

Dude, if Nintendo implemented a messenger service into their console that also had a computer version and it was well-done... could be great. And I hope they achievements, personally.

I like where they're going, but sometimes it's just time consuming to osk-type messages with a controller. I will miss the luxury of "Add voice" Live has given me

Presumably, if they wanted this to really work well, they'd add a keyboard and maybe even a microphone.

The speaker in the Wiimote is a Mic at the very least for voice communication and search functionality. They have been trialing the tech in the DS and now the Wiimote Lite DS generation for years now and more importantly the useful software to use alongside it.
As Speaker is a Microphone or more correctly can be used as. It would be insanely silly to nix this ability. I would say there is one of each in each controller.
You will have your personal Wiinote around your neck with a wireless range of 30 - 50 feet, Whenever you get a game invite or a WIM a bell or specifically selected personalise tone will sound alerting you to go suss out your consolse. I hope it has an alarm clock setting! And I hope it works of the same battery charge type in pack form that the Gyroscope mouse uses to piss off those batteries. 6V DC.
I also assume Nintendo is about to swagger in at least in Japan with the reasonably small VOIP telephoney market. If a Wii console or hotspot can act as a low bandwidth Airport G style Wifi pocket that recieved Wii unique user codes you could use your Wiimote as a phone around your neck when in range of a Wii or within range of a free wireless device.
Anything you want consider that included in the Wii if it makes sense that such things might be utilised.
Would japan carry around a Wiimote as a phone? Perhaps and if they do it so does the rest of the world eventually...

All Speakers Are Microphones (http://www.zyra.org.uk/sp-mic.htm)
Another application of the speaker-microphone duality is in the making of intercoms. Because the speaker at each end is also a microphone, the uses are switched over and over and over and out. It's a practical piece of electronics.
There is no price for practical and usable its free. Just do something cool with it!

I just had a thought:
They could use a wi-fi DS hookup and use the osk on the DS to type. It would be pretty decent if they did it that way.

Doesn't Microsoft have a patent on the achievements concept?
I mean, I saw a while back how Yahoo got a patent on the concept of having some sort of indicator in an instant messaging program that the person you are chatting with is currently typing something in their IM.
If Yahoo can patent some stupid idea like "see if the other guy is typing", I can imagine Microsoft can patent something like "a universal achievement and ranking concept across an entire console platform (and possibly cross-platofrm with windows)."
Ensuring the win360 is the only platform that can have an achievement and gamercard concept would be a nice win for them. :)

I would be VERY surprised if Sony and Nintendo did not each copy the MS achievment system.
Achievements are great system and you cannot gracefully put a system into place after your console launches, so I expect to see this at launch or at least announced/planned on by then.

If that's true, it obviously hasn't held out since every other messenger does that now.

If the Wii has an achievement system (which I think both it and the PS3 will simply so they don't lose out on cross platform sales from achievement whores) then I'm screwing my MS Gamerscore and going all out Wii score. By the sounds of things the virtual console games will be strictly emulated and not updated at all, but imagine if every old game had a few achievements? As if they aren't tempting enough purchases already, I'd have SD cards full to the brim with all the downloadable classics I could afford.

Hrmm... so Nintendo fanboys jump on the PS3 hater train for the PS3 controller 'copying' movement sensing... but somehow the Wii getting Achievement points -- and in this case, seemingly the exact same innovation Microsoft introduced with the 360 -- is super great happy fun time.
Yay for hypocrits.

Not teasing in the least. As someone who has used the GameCube Keyboard Controller in PSO1/2 and PSO3, trust me on this.

I had read somewhere that with WiiConnect24, you could send an SMS from your phone to someone's Wii.

Speaking personally, I never got down on PS3 for supposedly copying Live, at least. I said fromt he start that they NEED to copy Live if they want to compete. That should be their number one priority, with improving on it coming after that.

Too true, following what's quickly becoming an industry standard isn't "copying" per se. Although the motion sensing portion of the PS3 controller isn't really copying, it's sneakingly suspicious that Sony tried to steal some Wii thunder with that bit.

what about selecting the field with the Wii-mote, then speaking the word, and having it appear in type.
i think voice recognition software is pretty far along..
