View Full Version : Resistance: Fall of Man (PS3) Preview

In Resistance: Fall of Man, the U.S. and Britain band together in a last-ditch effort to save Europe and Asia from a horrific scourge. Humanity’s hope for survival is slim, and the tide of the battle rests on the shoulders of U.S. Army Ranger, Sgt. Nathan Hale. Here is a snip :
We were also shown some basic level layouts, a healthy mix of indoor as well as outdoor environments. These levels will be modeled closely after real-life areas from Britain during that time period. The tunnels were modeled after existing tunnels, and some buildings that would still be standing had WWII never occurred. Though dynamic lighting is what really gives the environment its great feel, clearly exploiting the power of the PS3, especially with the battlefield level, where your AI teammates and aliens were battling it out full force, with dust and smoke obstructing your view as you and your team fight to survive.Check the full Resistance: Fall of Man preview (http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=34235) over at WorthPlaying.

Someone hasnt cancelled this yet? Wow Im shocked.
Care to explain why they would cancel a promising project?
The first wave of PS3 games are looking really cool in my opinion, quality wise we aren't talking the gargantuant leap we saw between PSone and PS2 but if screens dribbling out of development houses are anything to go by we are seeing an almost complete wipe out of jaggies.
I'm just hoping there will be a decent ammount of longevity in most next-gen games.

The premise is just way too generic and there seems to be nothing special about the gameplay. It doesnt look that great either.
Also,
"The Americans have not been sitting idly by, though; they have sent an invasion force to retake Britain but were unsuccessful in their attempt."
makes me laugh till I cry.

Thinking like that, 90% of all games made would have been cancelled.

I disagree about the graphics, I'm not sure I could ask for much better at this point of the consoles life cycle, considering it hasnt even started. The premise youve got a point on although to be honest most FPS games are fairly copycat in the story department.
Just as a point of information, the article says this will be a launch title.

Looks like another generic WWII EXCEPT this time you fight against aliens...bland looking aliens. This could be an amazing game (the developer has a damn good track record) but right now it just looks medicore.

But when CoD2 was released and everyone was cheering, then the WWII concept was fresh and never done before?

Another reason Im not too fond of this title so far that I forgot to mention.

Typical hypocrisy of Xbox 360 fans, nothing to see here, move along.
When a certain game hits our console it is the best thing ever, if it goes exclusive to another system it's pure shit not worth buying.
CoD2 hits 360 - "Awesome!", "Best WWII shooter ever!" (wrong, CoD1 says hello but of course you never played it cause it was on the "ellitist" PCs only).
WWII shooter hits PS3 - "YAWN! Another WWII shooter".
The same WWII shooter tries something different (sci-fi, aliens) - "YAWN! Now they put some silly aliens in it, ROTFLMAO".
It's the same sheep-like reaction when MOH:Airborne was announced and people thought it was PS3 exclusive:
"YAWN! Another MOH? COD blows the shit out of MOH!"
When it became clear it is a multiplatform title they did a 180 and now MOH rocks.
Old dogs, old tricks.

Except now all the Sony fans are hypocrites too. Because they cried the WWII generic argument when CoD2 hit the 360...and now suddenly it's ok in this game.
<-devil's advocate
My personal opinion on this...it looks like HL2 meets CoD 2...and that's not a good thing.
This is worse than the 50 Cent game.

Odd, I hate WWII based shooters, hate squad based shooters, and generally hate fps on consoles, but somehow the blending of these in the setting and artistic direction of this game appeals to me.
*shrug*
People who are devoted to a certain console aren't fanboys, or fanbois, or any of those myriad of names. They're missing out.

This is a retarded thing to say.. How could you possibly know how good a game is without playing it??

I'm tired of WW2 games in general! I think it looks awesome, I just wish they chose a different era. I would love to see their degree of skill applied to the modern era. It could be badass, fighting through a war torn DC to get to the white house.

Nobody played the 50 Cent game but we all know that's shit.
I dunno....Half-Life 2 meets CoD2 - that might make me actually like the game as long as it looks like the former and plays like the latter. Otherwise... /shudder.

I don't see how people can fault this game for the era it's in, Insomniac is obviously making War of the Worlds: The Game.
Thinking about it now, it would be pretty hawt if they got the rights to use clips from the original radio broadcast in the game.

I certainly hope this game is good. It looks promising, and I need a few decent launch titles to convince me this Christmas (other than Heavenly Sword and Assassin's Creed).
Though there is some hatin' going on in this thread there is also reason to be worried about the title. Hands on impressions are way more important than hype or pictures, and Joystiq was not impressed.

"What we figured out were a number of winding hallways, stretching through an abandoned medical facility. Every few feet alien creatures would appear. Sometimes they attacked, and sometimes they just stood around. Either way, we filled them with hot lead and continued on. Rinse. And repeat.
Resistance is a derivative FPS. It's got no backbone. But with no Killzone in sight, Resistance looks to be one of the few -- if not the only -- option shooters fans will have on their shiny $600 (you're not really gonna buy the "core" system, are you?) unit come launch day."
Now this is early, and final games usually change for the better. But the worst thing you can hear about a game early on is unispiring generic design. Graphics and framerates can be fixed. Barrel and crate filled corridor shooters cannot.

IIRC from the book, it took place pre WW1 era. The first movie took place in then modern day, the 1950s. Spielburg and Xenu- I mean Cruise- their movie was current to us.
I think this game is doing what people hoped Halo 2 would have- the Earth being ravaged by an alien invasion.

I think Resistance will be an excellent title. It seems to be the most solid of all the launch titles for the PS3.
I've watched some of the videos and the amount of objects in the game looked decent, when a grenade exploded or other explosions happened.
I'm really interested in the 32 player mode. If the graphics hold up well and the lag is minimal, that could be a blast. At this point, it would be my first choice as a launch pickup.
Watch it get busted down to 8 players upon release.

Maybe and typically the online graphics aren't the same as offline, but I'm hopeful.
Huxley is still claiming 200 player online battles, so you never know. We'll see. Maybe Resistance can pull it off and maintain decent graphics.

Possible, but that would be a bit odd considering the reports that it was running 32 players at E3 and supposedly had a good framerate. It was also apparently demo'd at some point over the net and didn't have much lag.

Huxley's a completely different case though. Webzen is hosting all the gameplay on their custom servers. I'm sure if Sony wanted to port over Planetside to the PS3 they could have massive battles, but Resistance is almost certainly going to stick to the typical client-as-server system.
