TeamXbox (http://www.teamxbox.com/) has posted (http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/11134/Saints-Row-Dated/) official word from THQ that Saints Row has a slated ship date of August 29, 2006 to North American retailers. The game is being developed for the Xbox 360.
Saints Row sets the player as a member of the Third Street Saints, a gang trying desperately to take back the streets from three rival gangs that hold the city.
An evolution in open world gaming, Saints Row provides an unprecedented amount of freedom to experience the game as the player sees fit. Freeform game play gives you lot of choices. You can purchase an item at a store, or rob the cashier at gunpoint and run away with the cash, unless you prefer to break in at night for a full-scale robbery.
Anyone planning on getting this when it hits the shelves?

GTA: SA in HD without the countryside? Ell oh Ell, no thanks.

It looked like a mediocre GTA clone since day one imo. If I'm wrong, I'll eat this website, but I'm not, and time will prove I'm right.

Nope. This game always looked to 'street' for its own good, like the developers were taking it way too seriously. GTA without the tongue in cheek, top notch writing does not appeal to me. I could maybe see this as a bargain binner, barring some unfathomably good reviews and player buzz.
GTA IV is what I want. From the day the next generation consoles were announced it has been one of my most anticipated games.

It had some nifty things when I got a chance to play it. The city was much more alive than GTA ever was. But the frame rate was horrible. And the controls were iffy. And it's a GTA style game...I'm just sick of those.

Eh...I'm on it. I'm really curious how the multiplayer will play out. If it's fairly innovative, then it'll be damn cool. Since it looks like I'm one of the few, I'll let the boards know how it goes :). I'm not pessimistic or optimistic on this one, but I want a damn sandbox game for my 360.

the only thing that stuck out for me and this game was its HORRIBLE frame-rate in EVERY video i've ever seen of this game.

The frame rate does not surprise me. These are the same idiot developers that said the 360 was incapable of streaming fast enough to allow aircraft. Almost as stupid as the DOA guy who said DVD did not have enough storage space for next gen when he was trying to store a 2GB movie along with his game.
Now of course the streaming thing has been indisputably proven false by Just Cause, which will feature 255 000 square acres of streaming environment. Yes, two hundred and fifty five thousand square acres.

I growing ever more weary of these GTA style games. I mean sure GTA was cool and all but it shouldn't spark an entire genre of games to follow. Needless to say there is no way in hell i'm going to be getting this game ever.

I always thought GTA was boring as hell and looked like shit, this on the other hand looks allot better, I like the charecter customization and physics. If gamepaly is tighter and the controlls are good I will give it a shot.I would like a good story as well but I just can't convince myself that it will be better than GTA in that area.
I will need to play a demo before I spend the $60.

Another? Are you referring to Godfather, I guess?
I can somewhat see why people are down on this, considering we'll actually get GTA IV...But I really wanna see what they do with the Multiplayer.
Plus, the explosions look nifty.
Oh...man, and Crackdown I guess. As a matter of fact, if Crackdown comes out anytime close to this, I may have to rethink purchasing this.
*EDIT*
Looks like 2/1/2007 according to EB Games. With that in mind, I'll probably grab Saints Row.`

I'm out on this one as well. I saw a dev interview on one of the OPM discs and the game looked like total crap to me.
Like sTUBBS said, the devs are taking the concept way too seriously. He kept mentioning how importent it was to keep your street cred up, and how vital it was to control turf and pimp hoes. (God, I wish I was kidding) :(

I saw the game last September and that's exactly what it was. An almost exact replica of GTA: SA. Only with better color.

I liked the idea, in this game, that you can progress through the game by doing whatever you want. GTA always, to me, had annoying choke points or forced me to do things I didn't want to do. (Like murdering that rap mogul for no reason other than to get a no talent guy I'm not even supposed to like a recording contract...)
Apparently in Saint's Row you can repeatedly do wahtever activity it is htat you like best to move through the game without having to do the ones you don't.
Supposedly.

I'm more interested in Crackdown, but I'll definitely be renting Saint's Row. Also, I try to hold judgement on framerate issues, 'til it ships as many titles solve that problem at the end of development cycle.

Interesting range of responses here. Playing this at E3 I was actually asked at the time what I thought of the game by a reporter for a local newspaper who was from the same city as the developers. I told him that the only real negative was the framerate, as people here have pointed out. Most of the other items parts of it I thought looked and played pretty well. It looked like it had a consistent art theme and the sound was decent as well. Is this just the same as GTA? Probably pretty close, with small advancements to game play and interface.
To me GTA is a "TYPE" of game. If you like that type of game you should enjoy this one if they can get the frame rate figured out. If not this might not be for you as it looks like a evolution of gameplay of that type.
Also if you are NOT interested in being "Gangsta" you might want to stay away as well.
On a side note type of gameplay features would be wanted in a do anything environment that are not the ones that you do in GTA or Saints Row?

Volition is doing Saint's Row, right? I like Volition--most of their titles have been great. However, this game reminds me of The Getaway--a GTA type of world without the little nuances that made GTA incredible. I've been playing Liberty City Stories and even though it's the weakest of the post-GTA3 games, it's still better than any of the GTA clones created--by far.
Oh well, here's to hoping. I'm a huge sandbox game fan, and if this title is great I may pick it up for the 360.

I just have no intereset whatsoever in playing a gang warfare game. I must just be getting old, but I see enough of this shit in the real world to "enjoy" playing a game like this. Well, different strokes I guess. Take GTA or its myiad clones, drop it in a fantasy or sci fi setting and I'm there.

Do you not count Mafia as a GTA clone? Because if you do, then I disagree with you.

Damn. Forgot that one. I enjoyed Mafia more than GTA, I think. PC version, I heard the console ones were lacking.
They feel different of course, but Mafia had some great things that made the world feel much more vibrant. Mafia gave you the opportunity to shoot people in their vehicles before GTA: Vice City did. Roll over a convertable or soft-top and you can die in Mafia. Damage dealt when you get into an accident. SPEEDING TICKETS. Shooting while driving (and not just drive-bys like in GTA). Flat tires.
Mafia was absolutely amazing. So yes, you are correct.

Honestly, after VC I honestly don't care if I play another GTA or GTA style game again. That said, there are a few things that have me interested in this, the character creation, multiplayer, the supposed open-endedness...
Even if this doesn't end up that great, there's a glut of this sort of game coming out anyway, Crackdown, Riot act, Scarface, GTA4, Vampire Rain, so even if this isn't great, I'm sure there will be something else down the line for me.

Mafia is one of the best games ever made - top ten good.
The game was dripping with so much atmosphere. The level designs were top notch. The gameplay was phenomenal. The story was sublime - drawing from classic mafia movies but never outright ripping them off. The visuals were phenomenal.
And just to add something to the quoted post, another extra layer of icing was that reloading a weapon mid-clip meant that the rest of the clip was lost. The game was filled with so many little touches like this that made it feel so dense and believable.
And even though I mentioned them, the levels are some of the most well though out and brilliantly diverse of any game ever.
The only bad thing was that fucking race. How I loathed that fucking race. It was the only time I have ever downloaded a save game.
In short, if you have not played Mafia, do it - it is pure class. The game can still be easily found for ten bucks Canadian. And under no circumstances are you to play the console version.

Seriously, with the amount of hype these games get, I thought I was the only one that felt this way. Take the whole gameplay and plant it in something less 'real', for everyone's sake.
