Someone has discovered a “Cache Clear” code that deletes your cache and all of your Xbox 360 game updates. Joystiq has the story. (http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/09/xbox-360-hdd-cache-clear-code-discovered/)
HEXUS.gaming reports that a cache clear code has been discovered for the Xbox 360 hard drive via the dashboard's system blade. To perform the function, access 'memory' in the system blade, and then highlight the hard drive. Now press: Y, X, X, LB, RB, X, X. The following message should appear: "Do you want to perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices?"
If you initiate maintenance, the hard drive's cache will be cleared, including all software updates. Theoretically, this function could be used to un-update Oblivion in order to regain access to the unlimited gold and item duplication glitches. Note: we have not tested this function. The benefit would be if you updated Oblivion but now decide you want to revert back to your gold-exploiting ways. Just punch this wacko code into the dashboard and you’re done!
You’ll still have to download the update for everything else, however. You apparently can’t choose which update to delete, it just wipes all of them. One of the comments in Joystiq stated that you can also use this cheat to rename your Hard Drive.
Use at your own risk, you never know what else it deletes!

Would this be useful every couple of months to prevent drive fragmentation?

My Spidey Sense is tingling...yes, that's Microsoft's Xbox Support number getting dialed like a mother after everyone blows up their 360s ;)

That's what I'm thinking, but scared to do it. I want to watch this thread for a while............

Did it vanish to the sound of thunder and a child crying? Or did you just go blind?

I have the strong urge to father a child and name it after your HD.

Naming your hard drive isn't part of this "cheat" as you call it. The renaming part was part of the planned dashboard upgrades. Just highlight the hard drive, and the bottom of the screen says you can push Y for more options.

You can also rename and format the HDD in the system blade, without any type of "code". They are options laid out right in front of. I'm not saying that formatting is the same as this code, just saying. This little code seems fairly useless to me. Even for Oblivion, as the game already gives you this ability.
That said, you never know when this could be useful. Probably a nice little bit of info to have readily available via a Google search.

Funny, I named my HD several months ago the day I bought my 360.

I'm too busy naming my children...with four under five and one on the way (and for the life of me, I can't think of any gir's names if it's a girl...TacoTaco just won't do for a lifelong girl's name, unfortunately).
Edit: Found the time...kinda cool to give it (HDD) a name...the MU as well. Oh the wonderful little hidden gems in the 360!

Like Bubby, I renamed my HDD on day 1 to ensure I didn't get it mixed up with any of my friends.....how have people missed this?
As for file fragmentation, I doubt it'll make a whole lot of difference to wipe your updates periodically. They're probably stored on a seperate partition that doesn't get touched unless an update needs installing, so it's not like there's gonna be masses of file swapping to scatter things around.

I'm disapointed in all these gaming news sites that everyone posted this without even trying it!!! C'mon Evil, see the post, test it out, or make someone test it out, to see if its legit before posting it.

I joined this forum to tell everyone that I was having problems with Oblivion on the 360. Stupid waiting, out of sync sound, just glitches and lag. Then I cleared the HDD cache just like all the sites told you to... and wahlahh. It fixed everything. Nothing went wrong on the 360, and Im not sure if an update or two was deleted.
