FiringSquad (http://www.firingsquad.com/) chats with Volition's Chris Stockman about Saint's Row (http://www.firingsquad.com/news/newsarticle.asp?searchid=10587), the upcoming Xbox 360 exclusive open world crime action game.

Here is a snip:
FiringSquad: We have seen open ended crime action games before. How hard was it to develop a game that was different than those that came before?

Chris Stockman: It's hard to deny the affect that the GTA series has had on our industry. We don't shy away from the fact that Saints Row shares elements with them. But it is possible to improve upon some of the complaints the GTA series has received over the years. Stuff like targeting systems, no multiplayer, too linear of a story, lack of player creation, etc. We identified these key areas and focused on improving them.

Improving? Try duplicating. One trailer showed the pimp missions, polygon for polygon. Its the exact same game but looks like it lacks the charm.

FiringSquad: What can you tell us about the storyline for the game?

Chris Stockman: We actually have 4 separate stories in the game. 3 of them focus on the enemy gangs that control the city, they are Westside Rollerz, Vice Kings, and Los Carnales. The last one, which focuses on the player's gang the 3rd Street Saints, is split up into two parts, the Prologue and Epilogue.

While each story is linear you can weave in and out of them at your whim. You can start taking over Los Carnales and move to the Westside Rollerz in the middle of that story. You can do as little or as much of each story as you want. We leave it up to the player to make those types of decisions. In the end the objective is to take over the city so the player has to complete the stories in order to beat the game.

So there is basically just a linear story.

I'm still excited about this game. Character customization is a big deal to me, and it is something that has always annoyed me when it comes to GTA. Multiplayer would be nice too.

Just don't screw up the gameplay, please.

Yeah, the character customization looks like a huge part... you can model your gangster to look like Vanilla Ice, Marky Mark or any on of the Backstreet Boys. Yeehaw, to the extreme, ice ice baby... too cool too cool!

In otherwords, everything ive seen makes this game look pretty lame.

Yay, another GTA clone. Of what I can tell, it's GTA, but much more 'urban'.

Custome characters? That's new. I'm not holding out though.

What are the other (intentional) GTA clones?

Driv3r and GodFather as Serapth said. Also Mafia and the upcoming Scarface game.

I like the looks of this game. One thing I hated on GTA were the graphics. But beyond that, I think there are a ton of similarities. But the game is not linear. From what i have heard the game has several side missions like GTA. Personally i have no problem if the game was an exact GTA clone except prettier and faster.
