Anyone playing Rift? This is my first MMO. I was interested when I saw the trailers, but when I got into Beta 5 and played I couldn't stop myself from plunking down the $60 for the CE game (actually $47 with 20% off coupon on D2D) and signing up for a 6 month subscription at the founder's rate.
Anyway, I probably won't have too much time this weekend for Beta 6, but might put in a few hours. I have a level 15 ranged Rogue, but I'm looking to try a few other classes now that I have a little gameplay experience.

I played some of the Beta 5 event and enjoyed what I played, though I was having some serious PC issues at the time that that were causing me some performance problems at the time. I've got those all straightened out though, so I'm looking forward to a hopefully better experience with this event. Last beta I tried out a Warrior spec and enjoyed it a lot. I'm thinking I'll try out a Mage spec for this even and see how it goes.

I'll play it once March arrives. A little busy in between and I don't want to ruin the surprise more than I have to. I know too much already from my friends in alpha.

How did I miss this thread... Been playing all weekend. The Rift Invasion at the start of this phase was crazy...
Post your shard if you're playing. My main is on Silkweb, melting face as a Bahmi Dominator-Archon-Elemental.
I just logged off due to an interesting glitch of not being able to use my mount. I went afk and it auto logged me while I was using a disguise and now it constantly gives me the error "cannot mount while disguised" when I attempt to...

If you need a good guild feel free to check out http://www.gaisciochnaanu.com/. 5,500+ members strong and growing, plus we have several members in the alpha and our GM having personally toured Trion World's studio after they shot him an invite.

I was going to try it out this weekend, but they wanted a credit card just to play the beta. No thanks.

Yeah that's a little over the top. I'm sure there's a half-decent reason like age verification ect. Remember if D&D is satan's game, then MMORPGs are satan's world and those nutjobs do their best to force companies to deter youth from playing, such as requiring a CC.

I've already got a guild but I may check them out.

You must be confused. All you need to do is create a Trion Worlds account and apply a beta code to it...

What is the PvE like in this?
Is it a completely PvP focus with a half-assed PvE component like WAR was, or is it something more interesting?

It's sort of the opposite as far as focus. You have the PQs like in WAR, called Rifts, which are essentially a fined tuned version of them. It's part of the lore that I'm not too familiar with yet, it boils down to enemies from another "plane" attacking the world which the two player factions are fighting against together. They have different battle phases and if you have a strong enough group/raid you can get to higher level phases based upon your timing which offer better rewards. You always get a certain amount of Planarite for participating which is currency for Planar items which are mainly powerful stat boosters for an item you can use to attach different augments. The rewards also scale with how useful you were during the event. If you don't take down the Rifts there are eventually invasions from the enemies that will spawn out of it and attack the various outposts or towns and can kill all of the NPCs there who offer you quests or goods. Another innovative aspect of the game are your "Ascended Powers" which are only used while fighting inside of a Rift. They are abilities you purchase or gain and use special charges you get when defeating the Rift enemies.
I don't care too much for PvP but the instanced versions are fun so far. I haven't reached a conflicted zone yet where the open world PvP takes place but supposedly it's done well.
The Rifts are also part of the various Guild quests you can do that offer various boosts for the Guild or members. You don't always need a huge group to do them either. A skilled solo player can defeat a few phases or however many are required to just close the Rift. You can farm Rifts to level, simply grind quests, do PvP or of course all three. The quests are usually nothing special for an MMO so I like to go on Rift defense if I get bored with them.

The game is best described as this:
Everquest is the child of Tolkein and Gygax
Warcraft is the child of Everquest and Games Workshop
RIFT is the child of WAR and WoW
RIFT is the next step in PvE evolution. It won't be there at launch, but neither was it for WoW. RIFT does have the capital, motivation, and staff to really open that game up in very interesting ways. People can tell this is one you play for the long haul, and the communities are both mature and strong.

I have nothing to compare it to on the MMO side. But so far it's hella fun. I'm playing a Guardian now. I have two characters at level 15 (Belmont shard) and 17 (Greybriar shard). Both Marksman/Ranger with a swap out for third soul. I have mostly soloed but get my group time in on Rifts. Which what I like about it. I'm near the point where soloing is getting too challenging, but Rifts are great for a pick-up-group to just form and take it down.
There are sooo many quests though. I'm going to have to pick and choose more or I'll never move forward. Rifts are spawning so frequently too that there's never a lack of dynamic game play. I can see why these games become a serious time sink - I'm just questing and killing hours. I haven't even gotten into crafting or anything else.
Oh, and PACKERS WIN!

Not really feeling Rift from a lore stand point. Played some of beta 6, couldn't get very far. Maybe I just have MMO burnout as I'm kinda burnt on WoW atm as well.

I enjoy questing since it actually poses a challenge more often than not. If you just wander around not watching your back you can die in a heart beat. Especially when the Rifts are out of control you can be run over by a pack of elites. The lore seems interesting but for the most part I'm just focusing on leveling. There is a ton of it in the game to find. You can collect various books and find artifacts that are all a part of each zones story.

As you level up the focus of your game play focus shifts around a bit. Hell sometimes I go the the starter area just to feel powerful helping out the noobs closing Rifts. I've been burnt out for years and this is the first one that I can't stop playing and it's still beta.

I just grouped with Modeps for a while on Belmont Shard as a Defiant. That was the first time I tried the Defiant faction. As a Ranged character, I chose Kalari for race for the Dex boost.
The starting area was so much better than the Guardian one for some reason. I found a few glitches still, but overall I like the game a lot. For instance, don't back up into a tree with vegetation around it or you might get locked in. A couple times my pet rendered under small Earth mounds. I finally mastered swimming, but fighting under the water is a bit lame (that you can do it).
Grouping up is so much easier obviously. The respawns happen a bit too quickly for the number of people in the area, sometimes instantly. Our outpost got overfun with an invasion. Modeps and I fought as long as we could and then got the hell out of there.
It will be hard not using that mount until level 20. That turtle really speeds things up.

This is the reason I'm really interested in rift. I can't remember any time in the last 10 years I've lost and had to retreat from ANYTHING in a mmorpg. The prospect of being able to lose is thrilling.

I have no idea what you are talking about. What is a mount? MMO speak?
Also those tags are fucking overkill.

This will be one of the last times I mention Tabula Rasa where there were swarms of enemies attacking the base and you have to bounce. (SIGH) I miss that game..............:(
