MPOGL.com (http://www.mpogl.com) got an Interview with Marc DeForest the owner, co-founder, and lead designer of S2 Games.

MPOGL: Q: For our readers that may not know about "Savage 2: A tortured Soul" is, can you give us a brief over view?

Savage: A: Savage 2 is a cross blend of RTS, FPS, and RPG. Imagine taking the action of your favorite shooter and combining with strategy and tactics of your favorite RTS. One person plays the role of the commander who builds, researches, and commands his team with a top down view. Next in the chain of command are action players (FPS) that are known as officers. Officers have passive aura affects that increase the armor and health regeneration of friendly units around them. They also have the ability to use a hybrid utility that gives them an RTS view to give commands to nearby troops. Finally are the action players who get the intense action of fighting it out on the ground. They can load out as 18 unique units that have special abilities to carry out the mission of destroy the enemy teams command center. As the game progresses additional items, weapons, and units become available for the action players to use. A couple of these upgrades are Siege Units which must be escorted to the enemy’s base to destroy their buildings.

I'm really glad Savage 2 is coming out. I believe there is a lot of potential in the multi-genre game. I hope someone really nails it. Creating a successful multi-genre game must be a nightmare, not only to produce, but to sell. How do you convince an RTS lover to pick up an RTS/FPS/RPG/MMORPG/Flight Sim?

I seem to remember Tim Buckley of Ctrl-Alt-Del absolutely loving the first. And of what I can tell, it seems like a freaking sweet game. I am intrigued.

I dont like that they are filtering out custom map servers by default. It smells like they want to make money off of community maps.

At the _least_ the absence of custom map servers for public players will slow down the distribution and learning of the comunity of how to build good maps. Unless they really stay on top of authorizing good maps I predict mappers will simply go elsewhere. This would be a shame, since the gameplay in Savage was brilliant. Overall, I think running map edit tourneys would be entirely too slow to distribute quality maps.

Overall news like this moves S2 off my auto buy list and to my wait and see list. Still a likely buy... but maybe wait a couple months and see if there is a decent player base.

Anyone know where I can find the first one, cheap? I'm thinking it may make an inexpensive LAN party game.

Well....there is a certain way to get the game off the site for free, and have a free cd-key...its all legal too.

You could always just play the demo. I never got the game, but the demo was enough to addict me for many days...good, fun game.

So why the cloak and dagger routine, then? If it's all legal, couldn't you just tell the man?

Confused I be.

actually since they dropped the authentication servers, the whole thing is pretty much player run now.

1. Download: http://downloads.s2games.com/online_orders/savage_windows.zip
2. Install. Use all 0s for the cd key, or whatever, theres no authentication anymore.
3. download SEP (savage enhancement project): http://www.notforidiots.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=413
4. Install SEP. There are a couple different 3rd party addons that take the place of or correct the now gone S2 authentication proceedures, and add anti-cheat measures to block out the more recent cheating haxxorz, but SEP is the one I like the best.
5. Play.

Honestly im not sure what the legality of it is. I don't think anyone that is currently playing actually purchased the client though, and there are no more official S2 servers, as far as I know, just player run servers.

As to savage2 : color me excited.
