Thought I would start a DC Universe Online thread. I didn’t see one.
I am playing on the PC – Server Last Laugh as a Hero inspired by Green Arrow with Batman as my mentor – my hero’s name is Gunner.
I am using the 360 gamepad which works flawlessly with the game and required no setup – the GUI is designed to be navigated with a gamepad and I find the gameplay a lot better with a gamepad. I do own a PS3, but got it on the PC due to better graphics, I prefer the 360 gamepad, and my friends have PCs (only 1 has a PS3 and while DCUO is a good game, it isn’t go buy a PS3 good).
My MMO history is Ultima Online, City of Heroes/Villains, WoW vanilla through Lich King, Champions Online, and LOTRO.
Likes:
- Gameplay, I really enjoy how action packed it is. Reminds me of God of War in a MMO. Example attack: X + X + Y combo or Hold Y and Down on the thumbstick for a super shot, etc…
- In WoW I would often get bored playing, but the gameplay here is more entertaining IMHO.
- Graphics are good, not great, but good. I am in Gotham and it is dark and dirty feeling.
- I read comics so it is pretty cool having Batman or Oracle come over the com and talk you through quests.
- I have already arrested Bane and Scarecrow.
- They have pretty cool Comic Book style cut scenes after beating an instance.
- Good power selections.
- 3 Travel powers – Super Speed, Flight and Acrobatics (think Batman with wall crawling)
- The game has loot, so you can still get gear progression.
- Legends PvP – you actually play as Joker, Robin, Batman, etc…
- PvE and PvP servers.
- You can be a Villain or Hero
- A few more likes that I am missing
- Questing is very easy to navigate and so far Quests are straight forward.
- Lots of little “info” areas where you get background info from Lois Lane or Vicky Vale, etc…
- They claim to have several updates already in the works, but haven’t published a road map yet.
- Has stances like Champions – you can be in defensive, offensive, etc… stance.
- It does have end game content, but I can’t comment on the quality.
Dislikes
- The World isn’t as put together was WoW. While I like the World overall, WoW is more impressive
- It is a DC World (so if you want to make a Marvel like character Champions is better). Champions has more powers, more flight options and better customizing options.
- It isn’t as MMO as WoW, at least not yet. Chat is pretty empty for the most part, but that could just be because everyone is leveling.
- Targeting could be improved
- Took me a bit to get completely comfortable with the controller.
- I did not like it at all with the keyboard and mouse.
- Probably a few more that I am missing.
Champions with a gamepad is excellent also, but is closer to WoW than God of War, while DC Online is closer to God of War than WoW imho.

Nice. Thanks Wolfgang.
I myself am toying with the idea of buying this. But won't for at least a couple months.
Be sure to keep us up to date.

I think one of the negatives is they are going to keep features the same between the PC and PS3. So when they are working on content patches if the PC version is done, but the PS3 version is still in QA they will hold the PC content patch until the PS3's patch is ready too.

Mentors
In DCUO, you can fight besides your favorite heroes or villains. You can pick one of your them as your mentor and they will provide you with quests to help them fight the enemy. The three mentors for the Heroes are Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman and the three for the Villains are Joker, Lex Luthor and Circe. (Bios taken from the DCUO website)
Batman
Young Bruce Wayne was started on his path to justice when his parents were gunned down in Gotham City's infamous Crime Alley. Now known and feared by criminals everywhere, Batman is a strategic mentor for the new generation of tech heroes. Batman's trust is not earned easily, but you will become his valued partner as he calls on you to battle the chaos in Gotham City.
As his deadly nemesis, The Joker, spreads his evil, the Dark Knight will soon learn that you are a hero he can trust with his secrets.
Superman
Sent to Earth from the dying planet Krypton, Superman's Kryptonian physiology grants him tremendous powers under Earth's yellow sun. Now Earth's mightiest protector is the mentor for all new meta heroes and he will be your guide from the start as a fellow defender of truth and justice. He will guide you as you join his battle against archrival Lex Luthor, who seeks to control all superhuman powers.
And in the final battle, Superman's greatest ally will be you.
Wonder Woman
Created by the magic of the Olympian Gods on the enchanted isle of Themyscira, Princess Diana leads the fearless Amazons into battle. As an ambassador for peace and freedom, she gladly mentors the new magic heroes. She will rely on you to fight at her side against the lies and tyranny of the evil goddess Circe, who seeks to rule the world with magic.
And when Wonder Woman must contemplate sacrificing all to save the realms of magic, she will need you as her champion to stand against evil.
Joker
Rumor has it that the Clown Prince of Crime was once an ordinary man, caught in a vat of deadly chemicals that altered his body and mind. Now certifiably psychopathic, The Joker is a chaotic, maniacal mentor to all new tech villains.
His insane obsession with creating the ultimate weapon against Batman drives The Joker to new levels of destruction - with you along for the ride. But when it looks like The Joker is administering his final bow, he will need you to ensure he can deliver the ultimate punch line.
Lex Luthor
Ruthless megalomaniac Lex Luthor heads the massively powerful conglomerate LexCorp, using his riches for one goal: to defeat Superman and take his place. This criminal genius now mentors all of the new meta villains in their quest for power.
Under his lead, you will learn how to exploit all superpowers, with the goal of controlling and ruling the world. You will join his crusade against the "so-called heroes." And when push comes to shove, you will have your chance to show Luthor exactly how you eliminate anyone standing in your way.
Circe
One of the Olympian Gods, Circe is a creature of lies and deceit who believes magic will rule all of reality. She leads her army of vicious Bestiamorphs against any who defy her might. Now she eagerly mentors all new magic villains, seeking to build their power and her own.
Circe will rally you at her side against Wonder Woman and the heroes who would share magic with mortal humans. And when Circe herself is caught up in her own quest for power, she will learn that you too are a master of deceit.
Power Pools:
Fire
Players who choose to wield the wild and unpredictable forces of fire have to be tough. Fire characters like to get up front and blast away at enemies, and therefore they tend to draw a lot of attention. They also want to spread their flames so they can do as much damage to groups as possible. Fire powers have two distinct specializations:
Immolation
Immolation powers cause flames to well up around your character, causing damage to anyone in the vicinity. Immolation abilities also bolster your will to win, adding an extra element to help in combat.
Ignition
Flames burst forth, searing your opponents and their nearby allies. The damage from ignition powers become multiplied when used in tandem with other fire powers.
Ice
Characters that choose to master subzero temperatures make for challenging foes. During combat, ice wielders have the ability to lock down opponents who come within their chilling reach. These characters want to armor up and keep their enemies on ice through two unique paths:
Cryogenics
Ice forms around you and enemy attacks don't seem to land. By using your powers to create defenses for yourself, you are a master of mitigating damage. When the occasional attack does strike true, the cold is passed on to your attacker, often freezing them in their tracks.
Storm
Icy winds dance at your command, allowing you to push and pull enemies around the battlefield. No one can escape your arctic blasts, which allows you to control the direction of the fight.
Mental
Characters with the mental superpower are masters of mind over matter. Using their unique abilities, they can move objects with a thought to defend themselves or damage an enemy. They can also use the force of their will in more subtle ways, such as creating illusions to disorient and confuse. Mental characters love to be where the action is and control the battlefield with their minds. Mental powered characters can travel two mind-bending paths:
Telekinesis
With the brute force of your will, you can create force fields that encase enemies or send them flying down the street. Lift that car beside you and slam it down on an enemy without moving a muscle.
Illusion
By using your mental powers it is easy to make an enemy think you are someone else, creating opportunities for surprise attacks. Such power can even make an opponent think they see something that isn't there.
Nature
Characters that choose the nature power will find themselves masters over primal forces. Nature characters draw upon these forces to keep their allies alive or wither their enemies away. When the battle gets really tough, they can also let the call of the wild surge through them and actually become a beast full of rage, cunning and animal instincts. Nature powers grow along two distinct branches:
Shapeshifting
Nature powers allow you to shift into beast forms. You will experience the rage of a gorilla, the cunning and savagery of a wolf, or the hive mind of an insect. Abilities and movement powers change with each form, allowing you to adapt to each situation and terrain.
Plants
Using your powers over plants, you will be able to heal your allies or poison your foes with thorny vines and pollinating flowers. Your enemies might feel a small sting at first, but as time goes on your unleashed toxins eat away your opponents.
Sorcery
Characters who wield the unseen forces of the universe hold the power of life and death in their hands. Sorcerers can doom enemies to failure or ensure their allies have the power to carry on the fight. They are ideal for combat support, often tipping the balance of a fight with their spells. Arcane powers often fall into two categories:
Summoning
Drawn to your power, arcane creatures never leave your side. Choose wisely which pet you summon, for each will behave according to the mystic forces that created it. Whether attacking, defending, or performing some other fantastic feat, they are completely at your service.
Destiny
The fate of many rests in your hands as you change the course of battle. Generate good or bad karma for you, your allies, or foes. Gathering these positive and negative energies allows you to elevate or enfeeble those around you.
Gadgets
Characters with the gadget power will find themselves pulling out all manner of devices from their pockets and pouches. On the front lines, a well-placed gadget will help you control not only the enemy but the battlefield itself. Gadget characters are crafty and use their heads to place their devices strategically to achieve victory. The gadgeteer has two unique paths to follow:
Tricks
Tricks are devices that you place in plain sight to deceive the enemy. By placing tricks, you cause the enemy to waste time and create openings for you and your team to seize victory.
Traps
Traps are devious devices that remain hidden until sprung. Traps are stealthy devices that appear out of seemingly nowhere and cause devastating damage.
Travel Powers:
Superspeed
Speedsters travel through the streets of Gotham City and Metropolis at an incredible velocity. Those with Superspeed movement reach such tremendous acceleration that they can even run up the sides of buildings, up walls or across ceilings. Traveling long city blocks to get to the action becomes a cinch with this movement mode. In combat, speedsters become deadly whirlwinds using their quickness to move in and out of range with ease and special attacks to stun and disorient enemies. If you're a fan of The Flash, or any of the other speedsters in the DC Universe, then tap into the Speedforce and choose Superspeed for your movement power.
Acrobatics
Acrobats are master aerialists and climbers who use their skills to vault across the rooftops of Gotham City and Metropolis with seemingly effortless grace. Acrobats are able to climb and cling to any surface, giving them a unique way to approach both movement and combat. Using a Grapple Line, Acrobats can quickly ascend tall buildings and traverse the gap between skyscrapers. And for movement across the massive cityscapes, Acrobats can even glide across the sky after leaping from vast heights. In combat, the Acrobat's agility is unmatched, with special combat moves designed to draw enemies in close to deliver precision attacks. If you like Batman, choose Acrobatics as your movement mode and start leaping your way to justice or chaos.
Flight
Fliers soar over the skyscrapers of Metropolis and Gotham City, swooping down to engage their enemies with devastating attacks. There is no place out of reach for fliers, who are able to traverse any environment with ease. Those with Flight movement have their own special combat moves designed to stun enemies or knock them senseless. Using the environment around them, fliers can turn almost anything into aerial projectiles to defend the innocent or destroy the city. If you want to feel the freedom and exhilaration of hovering over the entire city like Superman, waiting for your opportunity to strike your foes, then Flight is the movement power for you.
One-Handed
Masters of one-handed combat wield their weapons with a mix of precision and strength. They execute quickstrong swings to create openings, before unleashing powerful assaults. Masters of one-handed weapons include Hawkman, Deathstroke, and Ra's Al Ghu l.
Hand Blaster
Wielders of amazing abilities, hand blasters hurl their power at their foes with a thrust of their arms or a wave of their hands. Their ranged attacks are chained together with grace and power to keep their enemies at bay, and they excel at charging up their attacks to put even more strength into each blast. Powerful hand blasters in the DC Universe include Doctor Fate, Starfire, and Killer Frost.
Bow
Archers wield their bow with shocking speed, precision, and power. Combat with a bow is an improvised flurry of ranged attacks with arrows or bludgeoning attacks with the bow itself when the fighting gets in close. Archers are very unpredictable and can use their trick shots to take most enemies by surprise from any distance. Masters of the bow include Green Arrow, Speedy, and Merlyn.
Brawling
Brawlers are powerful fighters that sacrifice technique for brute strength. Brawlers hold nothing back as they batter their opponents with punches that could knock a normal person down the block. Titanic brawlers include Superman, Wonder Woman, Doomsday, and Bane.
Dual Pistols
Master sharpshooters wield two pistols as if they were a natural part of themselves. Using their shooting skills to chain together deadly attacks at range, wielders can also use the pistols as melee weapons in close combat. Dual-pistol wielders can lay down fire in many directions to keep multiple enemies jumping for cover. Deadeye marksmen include the likes of Arsenal, Captain Cold, Two-Face, and Mirror Master.
Duel Wield
Characters that dual wield melee weapons make every movement a potential attack. Dual-wielding characters spin, flip, and unleash a flurry of blinding strikes in a series of timed attacks that keep opponents reeling. They are excellent at fighting multiple opponents and can easily keep a group of enemies at bay. Nightwing is the ultimate example of a master dual wielder.
Martial Arts
Martial arts fighters strike with speed and fury. They dart in close, strike from all angles, and string together combinations of punches and kicks. Martial artists are the most defensive fighting style, as they can dodge and block while executing various counterattacks. Martial arts masters in the DC Universe include Batman, Black Canary, Catwoman, and Lady Shiva.
Rifle
Precision attacks from rifle users can come in many forms and at many distances. Rifle users can attack from a safe position at range or use their weapon to bludgeon opponents that manage to get close. They have an array of ammunition and weapon types, from grenades and sniper shots even up to flamethrowers. Masters of the rifle include Arsenal and Mister Freeze.
Staff
Wielders of the staff whirl their weapons with blinding speed and force. They strike at their foes with combinations of sweeping arcs, spins, and twirling motions. They are masters of keeping the battlefield under control with stunning efficiency. Expert staff fighters include Robin and The Huntress.
Two-Handed
Colossal attacks are the usual fare for two-handed weapon masters. Two-handed weapon fighters use mass and reach to their advantage as they swing, slam, and smash their weapons in a series of slow but powerful attacks. Legendary wielders of two-handed weapons include Steel and Harley Quinn.

My main hero is on Zero Hour, Acuity. WW->Mental->1h Melee-> Acrobat. Chose the magic base so I could hang with the Sentinels, worked out well for me. Completed my mentor storyline and nailed 30 earlier this week. Doesn't take long at all to hit the cap, which is kinda nice. I don't define MMO's as necessarily being tedious grind fests. Plenty to do after (raids, duos, challenges, PvP), and the directed story progression gives a nice reason to roll a new char. You'll be grinding a bit for the epic gear though. I also have a villain mentored under Luthor on Zero Hour, and a hero mentored under Superman on another server. Actually want to do a Green Arrow inspired char at some point too.
Only problem right now is that there's a lot of variety in content, but it doesn't go all that deep. Legend PVP for instance, that was something they were really pushing, but there are only 3 maps for it so far. They were talking big about content updates though. If they can keep the new stuff coming, I'll keep feeding them my money. You can see a little foreshadowing in regards to updates in the feats, a fair number of awards have 'classic' in the title. Looks to be that they have the world nicely designed to be added to.
Love the combat, love the story presentation. Love the look and feel of the game world. They have stuff hidden around so it gives you reason to screw around a bit, not that the Metropolis skyline isn't already tempting enough for an acrobat. Targeting needs a little tuning, UI needs some tweaking. Especially the chat, they say that's being worked on now though. I also play on a 360 controller on PC, which I definitely recommend.

I'm enjoying the game. Has some flaws like anything else (IE overpowered class appears to be flame tankers... but what MMO isn't like this?). It's a fun game and I think a lot *easier* to get into due to ease of leveling. However the game doesn't have the best lay out for a user not used to MMOs.
It's fun though which is what matters at the end of the day.

It's City Of Heros with a new coat of paint, right down to the flame tankers being OP'd with the launch of the game. Didn't they take any Q and A from cryptic before they leased the engine?
Meh... if you enjoy the game best of luck. Big fat PASS in my playbook.

If it's any value, I didn't like CoH and thought CO was a decent concept very poorly implemented. They all have superheros, but the general gameplay is pretty different. This game doesn't have any of that sour taste that Cryptic's games have left in my mouth.
Not going to tell anyone to rush out and buy it though, MMO's at launch are too much of a commitment for impulse purchase. They really need a trial.
Also, OP flame tank? You might find a thread or two whining about it, but I think complaining about Nature is way more common than fire. Gadgets used to be the major whining class, but they fixed it a good bit since beta. Encountering a gadget user used to mean a guaranteed slow, painful death.
Fire just seems to be the overly chosen powertype. People who don't know what to pick choose fire. Hell, two of my 3 characters are fire characters. Guess it might change around in PvP though, haven't done much high end PvP yet.

Fire tanks were OP in CoH because people used the AoE auras to grind groups of trash and grind up to end game without paying them for months of service.
Capt_Thad
01-29-2011, 01:55 PM
You don't get much for grinding mobs in this, it's all about completing missions. Guess it kinda works together, but you can't just farm xp. You have to play through the game. As for getting to the end game, it took me a week or so of playtime to hit 30 on my mentalist. After that though, way more stuff opens up and everything is the same level.
Power grinding is a factor in CoH I guess you won't have to worry about in this.
Fire does have the best AOE though. They trade off the Ice powerset's damage absorption for tanking through local damage output. Sounds like that might be a similar concept. High damage, but it makes them kinda fragile. If they can't burn a guy, they can't heal themselves, and if they aren't putting out constant damage around them they don't tank well. Think they're far more susceptible to ranged guys and controllers than ice.
Ignition tree (as opposed to tank focused immolation) makes for a bit more of a fire mage type character.
Hit 27 today on the PS3 version so I'll probably rattle up to 30 tomorrow. Did a day of grinding effectively to push me a up a level cause I'll be solo. It was fun though, helped a friend level and got to close off some investigations.
Really attached to my hero now. :)

Well I think fire tanks are very easy to play in pvp which is why a lot of players are favoring them. I like how quick leveling is as the stuff I want to do is the end game not run through the Barrens for hours.

^Have you tackled any of the raid content yet? I still haven't gotten a chance to, curious how difficult it is to get a decent party and whatnot.

No raiding yet I'm sitting at lvl 27 after a week of playing or so. So it'll be soon enough but I can't imagine it being too difficult judging on all the shouts on my server for 1 more person thats a healer/tank.

So far my biggest gripe with the game appears to be the abudance of flame tankers that are flavor of the week players whom appears OPed in my opinion due to I assume their life leeching ability in PVP. Then also the dodge rolling deal is annoying during PVP when a player just spams that in an attempt to run and apparently can make you miss anything from point blank over and over. Far too often I find myself running into flame tankers whom just seem to be able to heal a lot of damage 1v1 (I've never played one so I'm not sure how they work) and when the going gets tough they just spam roll away which seems to make my rooting/stun abilities mute.

Two weeks in and I am still happy with DC UO. It reminds me of God of War meets WoW. It has a lot of the same stuff WoW had -- Raids (8 man), Alerts (4 man) and Duos (2 man).
The gameplay is great though. Yes you need gear like WoW, but not to the extent WoW needed gear. Kinda like God of War -- you could probably beat God of War with the starting gear, it would just be a lot harder. That is like DC UO.
The gameplay is also very deep with the combos, counters, blocking, travel powers and travel power modifiers. I started off with flight on a PvP server, but now I am thinking acrobatics might be best.
There are a fair amount of bugs and apparently some hacks (but every MMO has had hacks from UO to WoW, etc...) I get ganked on my PvP server, but again that is to be expected.
The game is deeper than I expected and I like that. Getting to level 30 is easy, but that by is like scratching the surface because the your play style, power, etc... all matter and need to be learned.
I am curious to see when they will announce the first content patch. That will determine how long I will keep playing this game. But it is a blast to actually be part of the DC World and I will be getting the DC UO comic book.
Also check out this week's Weekend Confirmed podcast at about Minute 38 when they start gushing over DCUO. http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/67315

I'm really loving this game. It's been hard to put it down and play anything else. The only thing that bugs me is the lack of a market/broker system. There is a "broker room" with many consoles and apparent vendors in the Watchtower, but it is inactive. I'm waiting to hear what they plan to do with them.

^Yeah, that's been that way since beta. They've told us the auction houses will get added ASAP, we're just waiting on the update that turns them on. Supposed to be coming along with the much needed chat system retooling.

Any word in regard to the auction houses, which are still not active in the game?
Chris Cao: Yes, definitely, with the first update. We're actually working on it right now. We had some issues in beta with making sure that fonts were readable and the UI was working well. We've worked hard to fix those things, and [it is] basically the very next thing on the docket to get out to all of you. You have stuff in your bags, and you need a way to trade it -- we understand that.

Feb Content Patch info from IGN: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/114/1147019p1.html
When Sony Online Entertainment announced that there'd be a $15 a month subscription charge for DC Universe Online -- the company's newest MMO -- the developers said that there'd be "roughly" monthly content updates to make that investment worth the money. Now, less than a month after its release, DC Universe Online is ready to announce February's round of goodies, and the package includes a new story mission, a new duo, and tons of extra stuff.
"What's happening in February is more like what's happening going forward -- we're going to just keep growing the thing," said Chris Cao, DCUO game director.
The only bad news is that we'll have to wait until "mid to late February" to get our hands on all this stuff, but once it's live -- with the exception of the seasonal goodies -- it's live for good.
Catwoman Content
SOE has been hyping a classic character playing a large role in this batch of content, and it turns out it's Catwoman. Selina Kyle is going to factor into a few new parts to DCUO.
* Level 30 Catwoman Episode: Here, your character will race to Gotham Museum and find Catwoman robbing the joint. Then, some ancient Egyptian artifacts turn people into lions and tigers that you have to fight. Look for five boss battles in this mission.
* Legends PVP: Catwoman will now be playable in "Play as Iconic" PVP.
* Multiplayer Race: Chase Catwoman with your friends.
* New Loot: You'll now be able to collect the "ancient Mayan Armor" and "Cat Burglar" gear.
Valentine's Day Content
Believe it or not, February is for lovers -- and now, DCUO is, too. In a rather interesting move, the Goddess of Love is pissed and has put down fountains across Metropolis. Enter one of these, and you'll be transported to a 100-person instance where you'll play as a cherub and battle "to determine the true meaning of love."
* Collectable Hearts: Completing races, participating in PVP and other actions will earn you hearts that you can use to purchase chocolates and gifts to give to other players.
* PVP Battles: Dunk the other team into the fountain.
* Love Alert: This is a four-player boss fight against the Goddess of Love, Devotion and Scorn.
* Loot: There's a new harlequin clown suit with hearts and a cherub disguise to earn.
* Mock the Boss: When you replay boss fights, you'll be able to give them "be mine" cards for Feat points.
More Cool Content
* New Duo: A two-player Bane duo will be available for players.
* PVP Expansion: There will be a new Gotham PVP zone.
* New Tier 2 Raid: There's a new eight-player raid zone for the Batcave. You'll fight alongside Batman against Brainiac and Brother Eye.
* Buy and Sell: Auction houses will go live in the Watchtower and the Hall of Doom so that places can swap gear on a massive scale.
* Additions: New collections, races and investigations will be added.

This is supposed to be an awesome DC UO new video: http://www.ign.com/videos/2011/02/01/dc-universe-online-the-second-blur-trailerl The video is awesome. See the future where a future batman (missing an eye and has a robotic arm) is betrayed by Lex Luthor. Continues to push the DC UO story forward.

Snip:
"We are going to take it a month at a time and build on that. We are adding more raids. We are going to continue to do that. We are going to add more suits for you guys as soon as you've earned these and keep expanding it. Whether it be new power types or other stuff going in new content, it's all going to be driven by what the audience is after."
