According to 1up the folks who can't get it thru Live may have to pick up an magazine to get the disc that includes the patch.

OMG That is so gay. They should mail every owner of the game a disc that has the patch on it.

Why? It isn't like you can't play through the entire campaign without the patch.

Well, they'd need to know our addresses, so how about just the ones that actually mailed in their registration cards?

Wow, done already. :D

Since you're obviously using internet right now, connect your 360 to Live, get a free account and boot up the game. It's like getting a disc sent to you without having to wait and pay for shipping.

Well...I just finished up the main questline today. The last 3 quests are just amazing. What a great game.

Onto the dark brotherhood.

It's only been about 10 weeks since release. That's actually pretty good for a multi-platform patch.

Have you guys heard about the concept for the new official mod? It's the stupdiest fucking thing in the world:
The new quest revolves around a powerful mage who has set off in search of the Daedric Artifact Mehrunes' Razor. The Razor has the ability to instantly kill enemies, and the mage intends to use it to overthrow the Empire. It's up to the players to ensure that power doesn't fall into the wrong hands--or at least, anyone else's wrong hands.
Jeezy creezy, can they sink any lower? Insanely powerful, seemingly unstoppable (you just KNOW there's gonna be some counteract that the wizard forgot about) weapon? Check. Evil mage seeking it? Check. Empire with hundreds of guards and elite soldiers? Check. But only ONE GUY (that's you!) who can stop this man from destroying the empire? Check plus plus

Ehhh... I guess. Still, I think a lot of people would've wanted it out faster. I haven't had any major problems, though, so I'm fine.

It's fantasy stuff. You were expecting Shakespeare? ;p

I vote for too long, but indeed nice. Though, I'd like to see a change list. If this actually fixes some of the more annoying aspects (arguably bugs) of the game on the 360 version (PC has mods), I may be willing to buy extra content.

Of course I wasn't, but this shit is just retarded. I mean, I know TES series is probably one of the most generic out there, but come on that's just weak.

Here's hoping it fixes my charachter. I got to level 50 in hand to hand (one of my major skills) by watching the people fighting outside the arena and it didn't tell me I became a journey man. Since then my hand to hand wont level up unless I use a trainer.I havn't touched the game since then.

Yeah, it would have been better if they had a transexual character and a band of acquaintances setting out to stop the ultimate evil from destorying the world, right?

Now THAT'S original!

Play the Harvest Moon games. Most of them don't have anything bad that's going to happen anytime soon. Sure, sometimes you have to save a small village, but that's about it. Moist of the Harvest Moon games are just about handling your farm and raising a family.

Well, you have the 2 extremes. The fact that nothing happens if you don't do the quest sort of crowns the silliness of it.

Draw a line through it, make it so that it effects the life and death of a character or a small town. Obviously that has to be designed beforehand to maintain a consistency with the core game, but there's nothing keeping them from making official mods that inter-relate to eachother in some way or another. It's probably the smart thing to do.

I think RPGs could be made where conflicts can just involve warring countries or other problems on a smaller scale. Baldur's Gate had a guy trying to take the mantle of his dead God of Murder father by starting a war in the Sword Coast, which would have created hundreds or thousands of casualties, thus (hopefully for Sarevok) promoting him to godhood. Sure, a megalomaniac isn't anything new, nor is harnessing the power of a god, but at least it didn't mean the end of the world.

I agree that game stories are too "end of the world" ridden. Ever notice how the same thing happens in fantasy books, where the central conflict is happening on one continent while the rest are oblivious? (think Wheel of Time) I'd be pretty pissed if my planet ended and the Lord of Darkness took over because of the events on some distant land. Well, now that I think about it, it isn't too far off in these modern times, but in medieval fantasy settings? G'ah.

Personally, I'd like to see quests that focused more on npc interaction and relation that actually took advantage of the so-called Radiant AI than just more powergamer bullshit. But of course, Oblivion's main market is add-addled dumbfuck teens so that's not likely to happen anytime soon.

Microsoft's 360 certification process takes a few weeks (independent testing, basically). If they've been fixing other bugs... well, they can't release them in the patch without sending the beta patch to Microsoft first.

1. Fix group of bugs "A".
2. Send patch "A" to Microsoft, begin working on group of bugs "B".
3. If Microsoft OKs patch A, release A. If Microsoft does not OK A, they re-fix the bugs in A and send it back, possibly with any fixes that would have been in patch B that are done.
4. Once A is approved and delivered, finish up and send in B for approval, and begin working on C.
5. Remind people that the Designers working on the downloadable content are NOT PROGRAMMERS, and they downloadable content DOESN'T NEED PROGRAMMERS.
6. Repeat steps 2-5 as needed.

I really hope that the new patch won't make the map mods stop working. I love the Elven Maps and No Border Icons patches, and those stopped working after the beta patch, along with the keyring patch.

Wait. What bugs were there in the Xbox 360 version?

Something I find hilarious about the whole "omg save the world from teh evil man!" is how badly it fits in to Oblivion's "sandbox" style. The game boasts you can go anywhere and do anything and do sidequests and do things at your leisure but then bam! you have these guys yelling down your throat about you HAVE TO SAVE THE WORLD RIGHT NOW OR IT'LL BLOW UP! Yet...it never does. It's totally immersion breaking. If I'm supposed to be saving the world, why am I collecting freaking flowers for the Mages Guild? And if the world is going to end, how come it hasn't happened already what with all those opened Oblivion gates I've walked past and whatnot. Gosh.

It just reeks of horrid design.

I'm not really saying all games need to be this way, much less all entertainment in general, but could you see a sitcom like Seinfeld working in a videogame, much less an epic fantasy setting? You're completely ignoring all context.

Supertongue5000
06-05-2006, 06:54 AM
No, but I could see just working as a freelance mercenary fit in an "epic" fantasy setting. Of course, most developers would make it so you find some evil ANCIENT EVIL and you have to save the world!! Again!!! Saving the world is dumb and boring, and offers little roleplaying value beyond Big Sword or Kinda Big Sword. The market unfortunately eats this shit up so the developers are too big of pussies to try anything different.

Okay, you're right that a freelance mercenary idea could work, but what the fuck are you talking about with the rest of that post? You said the market eats it up, THEN you said the developers are too big of pussies to try anything different? No they're not... they're just doing what sells, as you just pointed out. That doesn't make them pussies, it makes them money.

Supertongue5000
06-05-2006, 07:33 AM
It does make them pussies because they have this huge-ass brand (TES) that'd probably net them 500,000 copies sold just on the basis of the license and hype, but they're not doing shit with it. They're sitting there making the most generic and massmarket game possibly when they could be doing great things with the setting. Think of what they could've done with the RadiantAI compared to what they did do.
Okay, you're right that a freelance mercenary idea could work
Along with a bajillion other ideas. Fantasy isn't just about saving the world and if you think that's the only possible plot device, then no offense, you're a dumbfuck.

I don't think it's the only plot device that works. Hell, it's one that I would pretty actively avoid when writing fantasy myself. But let's be honest here -- you're fucking Nichols, aren't you? Either him or someone who sounds just the fuck like him. Great.
