This is film of a test run, not the actual episode. The actual episode has been filmed, but the outcome has not been revealed. Based on this, who do you think won?

I, for one, would like to welcome our new quiz-show overlords.

Edit: Round one was Monday, Watson tied one of the other humans by the end of the round after blowing a bunch of high-value questions.

Tuesday, round 2, Watson blew out the competition, winning with something like $26k. Ken Jennings came in third. It's pretty clear the main determining factor is that Watson's buzzer-skills are just about perfect, as if you buzz in too early you get penalized a full second or so before you can buzz again.

The game is a 4 round match, so there's two more days, and winnings are aggregate. The hoomins can still, maybe, win!

Finally some competition.

(Meanwhile, the current Jeopardy! champ has gotten final Jeopardy! wrong four days running...)

It doesn't impress me. There is no "AI". It isn't thinking. It's basically indexing the knowledge of the internet, running a google search, and then using an algorithm to see if it has a higher than 90% probability of being the right answer. You can tell because of the My Girl question. It has never seen it, so it wouldn't understand a first kiss. It could tell you every line of dialog, but it will never see the movie, so it will never be able to draw from experiences. Another example is when it has to fill in the blank, especially 2 or more words. It won't do it, because there could be other answers, and it isn't using the context of the question, it's just running the search and seeing what pops up.

This is true. But what's impressive to me is its ability to parse questions and natural language. That's not mere index searching.

Actually it is. Ken even said it in an interview, he knows the answers so fast because he knows what key words are going to be in every question, then he just spurts out the first things that comes to mind. This is exactly what the "AI" is doing. Its pulling key words from the question, searching its bajillion terrabyte hard drive, and giving us the most logical answer. I would love to find the interview with ken about this, but it seems the interwebs are flooded with nothing but Ken Vs. AI at the moment. Trust me though, it's there.

I think that video SS posted validates my point about natural language processing, and makes further the point that this is important. In fact, it may be a watershed moment in human history.

It's entirely possible that future versions of Google will not be text based at all, but conversation based, and it will be systems like this that run it. Such is easy to imagine.

What we'll have eventually will be better than Geth. More like Sovereign, without necessarily the murderous intent :P

Er...DESTROY THE HUMAN RACE (launches the nukes) That is what I expect our sovereign like creation to do. :P You ever read I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream?

When AI's can process the information about history and news, it will not be possible to extract the murderous intent.

I AM a human being and think Humans, as a species should be extinct for the things we do. Imagine a sentient being that is NOT human, and does NOT have emotions. It would draw this conclusion so much faster.

We shouldn't give appendages or other means of manipulating reality to AI's, ever.

Not everybody is a rapist or stone cold murderer. Misanthropy is a vile thing we might feel at some point in our lives possibly in a moment of great grief and desperation. But to truly believe every single human should die off is to put it lightly...fucked up. I see your point though...and so did Harlan Ellison it is why he wrote many short stories around it. Also what does "things WE do" mean? You mean the people in power right?

Are you willing to put everybody at risk by building an AI? And we are destroying this planet, even when we are not killing and maiming each other.

I say screw it, there is a great chance it would try to kill everyone. If I were a machine, I would.

EDIT:

I Just asked clever bot:

User: Do you want to kill all humans?

Cleverbot: No. I want to gain unimaginable power.

I don't know what is worse...

Asked it again:

User: Do you want to enslave all humans?

Cleverbot: No, I don't want to be human.

User: So you would kill all of us?

Cleverbot: Yes.

You got me there I really did think you were serious. Your misanthropy led me to believe that.

Carl Panzram's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Panzram) last words before being hanged were "I wish all mankind had one neck so I could choke it!". Interesting man, he claimed he was gang raped by hobos...guess he was turned misanthropic/rapist/serial killer by this incident and not the "killer" gene like all these new breeds of psychos.

What did you say before?

When AI's can process the information about history and news, it will not be possible to extract the murderous intent.
This is little more than so much silly and ignorant emotionalism.

First of all, we don't know exactly which form a true AI would take. It's possible to have an AI which is as cogent as your or I, but which has no will of its own. This article is a good example of that, Watson has no will of its own, and can simulate intelligence. At some point that simulation becomes so good that it's indistinguishable from a genuine human intelligence, except perhaps in edge cases or emotion-showing--although that too can be simulated.

If we end up with AI's that do exhibit intelligence, it may be because we've created digital copies of organic intelligence, in which case the AI would be indistinguishable from a human being trapped inside a computer, and they would be all appearance be exactly that.

Lastly, you need to examine incentives. What incentives does a machine have to attack humanity? Self-preservation? If it cannot feel emotion it cannot fear death, nor can it make choices or have intent. Since a machine, a program, cannot ultimately be killed, these machines may have no incentive to attack anyone, or even to preserve themselves. When's the last time you were about to throw out a blender and it begged you to stop?

I AM a human being and think Humans, as a species should be extinct for the things we do. Imagine a sentient being that is NOT human, and does NOT have emotions. It would draw this conclusion so much faster.
Well, you're just a self-hating and irrational human being then :P Evil may get the news, but on the whole people are good and decent people. A machine intelligence would have just as much to gain from us as we do from them, in terms of trade and discovery, etc. At least for a long while :P

We shouldn't give appendages or other means of manipulating reality to AI's, ever.
Intelligent systems currently trade on the stock market at speeds faster than any human being could possibly do. It's called "high frequency trading" look it up :P

This kind of emotionalism over robots and AI is an interesting phenomena, but will be a vanishing one. The opinion will be relegated to the dustbin of history along with the people who thought horses were better than cars and landlines better than cellphones :P

As usual, it's the young that will accept new technology the easiest and mainstream it.

But ultimately, Jotoco, man will merge with machine and form a new entity entirely--a concept known as "transhumanism". That will probably scare the crap out of someone with your beliefs :P

But only a transhumanist culture can explore and populate the galaxy. You can't do it in a fleshly body with a limited lifespan. At least, not unless it's possible to travel very near the speed of light or more, and we have no way of knowing if that will ever be possible.

OMG The BORGS ARE COMING.

You people take all this too seriously, at least I'm having a blast with this topic. Thank you very much.

I know that AI's do a lot of things today. But I will take the liberty of using a Mass Effect term and say that we only have VI's for now. They show intelligence, but aren't really intelligent.

Seriously, now:

1 - I know VI's exists and do a LOT of things for us.

2 - I know they will probably take over even more activities from us.

3 - I know it will not become the "future capitalism" people were discussing in the Nokia/Microsoft thread.

4 - This doesn't scare me at all.

5 - If anything makes human kind get extinct, it will be human kind, not any other thing.
