From the mind of Will Wright, the creator of The Sims, comes SPORE, an epic journey that takes you from the origin and evolution of life through the development of civilization and technology and eventually all the way into the deepest reaches of outer space.

Begin your odyssey at the dawn of life as a simple microbe just trying to survive, then use the fun, intuitive Editors to evolve the creature from its microscopic origins into an intelligent, tool-using race. Guide your species as it builds (and the player designs) villages, buildings, cities, and vehicles. Along the way to becoming a global civilization you can choose whether to hunt or forage, attack or trade, be nice or play rough!Check 8 new Spore screens (http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=34549) over at WorthPlaying.

You're new here... so I can't tell if you're being serious or sarcastic.

Anyways, the screens look similar to the video that was released for E3. Yet I still eat up any Spore news. I can't wait for this game to be finished.

Hehe, that or use proper grammer. Since you didn't capitalize your sentence I didn't know if you had two periods from bad grammer, or if you were trying to use an ellipse. Remember, an ellipse is three periods, capitialization is good, and punctuation is your friend ;).

Still can't wait to get some Spore, though.

How about spelling, genius? You're grammar-nazi street-cred is also seriously affected by 1) your use of sentence fragments, and 2) your posts being less than 5000 words long. Try harder please.

I think spore looks quite interesting and cant wait for it to come out, but 2007 is so far away. :(

Spore has the potential to be one of the greatest games ever. Like Sim City and The Sims. And Will Wright is not Peter Molyneux. He NEVER missed the mark... And he always suprises the early critics.

Both his previous oevres got a lot of flak before release.

Spore could be made of vector graphics, I'd think it's cool anyway.

I'm a horrible horrible speller. Lots of times I'll use spell check on words I know I have wrong before posting, but not always. Some I just don't even notice are wrong, the correct spelling of grammar eludes me.

Wait... so you'll say using sentence fragments is bad, and then use one directly after saying so. Where is the noun for for "Try harder please." I know it's implied, and I don't normally care, but you were just nitpicking about it O.o.

Mostly I was just referring to how capitalization and punctuation makes it easier for others to understand the context of what you're saying, especially when someone is making a dry joke. I wasn't trying to be some hard core grammar nazi.

Indeed. But when correcting someone else's spelling errors, you should try not to have any of your own. It just looks bad.

And Will Wright is not Peter Molyneux.
Stormwatcher sees into my inmost thoughts and knows my fears. His words assuage my mind and salve my dreams. I am wrapped in the warming cloak of his reassurance. My thanks. :)

For the grammar-police: the verb of the sentence "Try harder, please" is in the imperative form. The English imperative needs no noun because the listener is the implied subject.

Am I a grammar-Nazi for defending someone's grammar?

Conjunction junction what's your function?

Spore looks interesting but the jury is still out regarding the FUN factor.

It's worth pointing out that Peter Molyneux didn't used to be Peter Molyneux, if you follow. He put out a series of fantastic games; I've enjoyed Dungeon Keeper way more than anything Wright's made. He only started having issues when he overreached, with games that were chock full of good ideas but which were never assembled into a sensible core of gameplay.

I'm yet to see why Spore doesn't fit into that latter category.

Because it's not out yet for people to judge? Reactions right now are based only on videos, screenshots, and previews so far, and they look great. And as you said, it's Molyneux that's known for the overreaching ideas that never deliver, not Wright.

Am I the only one who thinks the game looks too cartoony and the graphics look bad?

I hope it's so fun the fugly graphics don't even bother me.

I dig the graphics personally. I wouldn't mind a bit of an upgrade before the game's out, though, since we've still got quite a wait.

The cartoonyness of the graphics is due in part to the fact that whoever was playing it wanted to make some sort of Gomer Pyle animal. Cartoonyness is probably exacerbated by the fact that the animal models (and probably everything else) uses either proceduraly generated textures or general textures. Without textures designed with exactly what the modeler has in mind, any 3D model will look cartoony.

As for my own opinion, I think that this is the perfect game to bring procedural generation to the spotlight, since a game where the player creates a goofy looking animal and helps it breed up a sentient race of goofy animals needs cartoony graphics.

The graphics are unimpressive, but that doesn't bother me.

1. The graphics are at least serviceable; I'm not going to get a headache staring at this stuff for hours.

2. The very premise is fairly cartoony; a verite aesthetic would arguably subtract from the game's effect.

3. It's June 2006; I assume most of the graphical work will be done later.

4. If they're not working on superlative graphics, that must mean they're spending a lot of time honing superlative gameplay. Right? Right??

Stormwatcher, I think I need a hug.

I was trying to point out the stupidity of defining "ellipse" in response to an obviously sarcastic post... I lay no claim to even moderate writing ability anymore. Getting my engineering degree pretty much turned me into an idiot savant. :)

We've seen plenty of footage and complete gameplay descriptions. If that's enough information to justify getting hyped about the game, it's enough to justify not being hyped as well. Depending on one's inclination.

My point with Pete was that previously lauded developers can go astray when they make games with tons of great ideas that don't add up to a fun, coherent whole. And it is my opinion, as informed as any observer's, that the game's concepts are diffuse enough to defeat attempts to add up nicely.

True point. It's all we have to base hype off of, by hype's very nature. But either way, obviously what we've seen is getting more people hyped than not hyped. Whether or not the game lives up to that we won't know till it's released, obviously.

Fair enough. That said, I personally don't agree with you. Judging by the footage I've seen, previews I've read, and accounts from the few people who've had the chance to play the game so far, I think it sounds like it's really going to deliver and pull together these admittedly different game types into a solid whole. I could be wrong, as could you, but I'm excited to find out at least. More than I can say for most games.
