There's a 20 minute video tour of the upcoming Xbox 360 dashboard update over at Gamevideos (http://www.gamevideos.com/video/id/3954).

It's a bit lengthy but, it really shows off where Microsoft wants to go with the Marketplace.

I think this was linked already in the first spring update by bap...

Edit - This (http://gamevideos.com/video/watch?video=3954&largeFormat=wmv) is it. It's in a bigger format as well.

Agreed. People act like MS is giving us some wonderful gift or revolutionary update.
I'm just happy for download queuing and boot-to-console, mainly.

If you watch the 20 minute video, you'll see quite a few changes. As for how revolutionary it is.... 360 Live seems to have two camps.

One that thinks Live is revolutionary and another that thinks it's just slightly more sophisticated than WOW, Ultima Online, Gamespy, Steam or another MMO.

Remember it's not just one game, it's supporting 58 games at the moment with multiplayer, chat, friends lists, scoreboards, auto updates and single signon ecomerce in over 30 different countries.

I would think that's a little more challenging than a few MMO servers on a single game.

Anyway, I think we'll learn more about how difficult it is when we see the Sony and Nintendo offerings this Xmas. Neither are trying to be as ambitious as Microsoft, but on the other hand if it's that easy, they should be able to come close with little difficulty and provide us with bi-annual updates for free as well.

Neither Gamespy, Steam, nor Live are MMO's. They are gameing hubs, with match-making services.

I think it's incredibly gay.

Notice that I used the word gay, the word that you DESPISE as an adjective, but this isn't in the derogatory sense. It's just cementing a fact. So there.

Perigon,

Yes, I know that. Give me a little credit.... :)

They are all examples of having some portion of Xbox 360 Live functionalty. For those that have tried Live and and all the mentioned services, that is painfully obvious, but still many who haven't tried Xbox Live or 360 Live compare it to some other ecommerce or MMO type service incorrectly, when it's so much more.

To a percentage of the posters, Live is just not that complex or sophisticated. Hence, some of the flames on the service or complaints about UI or delay in the updates etc, as it shouldn't be that hard..., when I believe it is that hard.

Sony should snap out a similar service if its truly that easy. I doubt they will, because only when we see a similar offering will we really have something to compare Live against, IMO.

Now, while I do pay for Live, I don't think anything that it does couldn't be done easily for free. None of the games are hosted on Microsoft servers, so the majority of the bandwidth being used is on the consumer's side. I am somewhat glad that it is a pay-service though, otherwise they likely wouldn't bother putting the work into it that they do, and we'd be left with an ununified online platform similar to what Sony has going.

As posted in this thread: (http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12916) Microsoft sends word that...during E3 there were over 5 million downloads equaling 6 tera bytes of data.

That's what your Live fees are paying for. For a little more discussion on this listen to this week's Gaming Steve podcast. (http://www.gamingsteve.com/)

Agreed.

It could be free and the costs absorbed by 360 or software sales. It's a business model decision. However, as strange as it sounds, I'd rather pay...

Microsoft would likely put less effort into a "free" Live service and $4 a month is well worth it for a quality service, IMO.

I'm one of the 55% or so 360 users and spend about 50% of my time on multiplayer games.

Ludoc

Some one has to pay for them. MS offsets their cost for bandwidth by charging Gold members a premium. As you said the Gold members' provide their own bandwidth for games. Those of us who like to play online and pay for the privilege are actually subsidizing everyone else's downloads.

Xbox Live: From each according to his ability to pay for online multiplayer; to each according to each according to his need to download trailers and demos.

Pumped Up,

You'll be glad to know (actually, I doubt it, since I've seen many of your previous anti-Microsoft posts) that Microsoft is working on over 10+ 1st party titles. I'd expect they have far more employees/developers working on those titles than the Live service, unless you have some facts to back up your "focus" claim.

As for working on "good games". Here's a pretty good place to start while trying to decide if Microsoft is indeed focusing on bringing us good games.

Not a bad idea. I listen while riding my bike, working out or playing 360 games, but it would be nice if you could somehow subscribe via Live without having to copy via USB.

Kudos to mIcrosoft for improving the level of service.

This is the kind of attitude that builds long-term customers. Screwing yous customers over like Sony does may serve short-term profits, but just pisses people off in the long haul.

Microsoft is making a fan outta me. I may be picking up a 360.
