2 Ohms of resistance? For those of you who aren't electronics people, that's reasonably close to being a wire. And just inside the Kindle where the hooks go are the ground and power for the Kindle... remember that's how it powers the light. In fact, when my Kindle is in the case, there is more electricity running through those hooks and the case than there is going to the Kindle's actual electronics.

This is why the Kindle crashes. Once a bit of paint has rubbed off the hooks, most of the Kindle's power flows through the cover, leading to brownouts; the CPU does not get enough juice to operate properly and ends out either hung or rebooting!

If you're like me then you got your mother a 3g kindle for christmas but watch out? Depending what kind you purchased could wind up a big headache.

The 3G lit kindle needs the gold hooks to complete a circuit and light up. So what does amazon think about that?

Amazon guy: Hmmmm the cheaper model is going to sell a lot more but the permium model requires that cover which short circuits the un-lit version. Making 2 different covers will cost too much money and time to manufacture. Lets just spay some cheap black paint over the gold hooks so we only have to make 1 set of covers.

Oops... as soon as the paint wears off people's un-lit kindels will start crashing.

Fuck you Amazon!

I'm assuming you're talking about the case with a light? I got a 3G Kindle for my birthday last month and got a regular leather case. Haven't had any issues.

Did your paint wear off yet? I have not tested my case because it's a Christmas present for someone else. All I know is after examining it, I've got one with black hooks so back it goes.

So, the solution is, cut the wire on the cover between the hooks and remove a small section of it so it can't touch. Doesn't sound too hard.

That would ruin it. Either way you'd have to cut through stitched leather and felt.

Isn't that on the inside though? One slit in the cover and you're basically done, and it's invisible. Or, there's already a hole next to the hook anyway, can't the wire be accessed from there? This doesn't seem an interminable problem, though your point about Amazon's stupidity is well taken :P
