So my preferred digital plan from comcast gets me 6mb down, 2mb up with what they told me was the "best" modem (SB5120) they had to offer 6 months ago. Well I just installed my new cable modem and went from about 6mb down to 20mb down pinging cnet. It SCREAMS on torrents and we are only DOCIS 2.0 rated in my area. 3.0 coming soon which this one supports. The thing is a breeze to get going and took 10 minutes topps to configure. At a little under 80$ USD it's a HUGE boost for the money and highly recommended.

Oh yeah pros and cons.

Pros: I won't be bitching about it in the forums. Easy to install. Good price. Huge value.

Cons: Needs to be compatible with your cable company. You need cable. It will cut into your cheetos and Mtn.Dew budget. You'll be seen as a geek until you show them you can download seasons of chickflick crap in the blink of an eye.

I thought Comcast throttled bandwidth. How does getting a better modem let you go over 12Mb (a speed which I get now using my Comcast-issued modem)?

Also, don't you have to work with Comcast to set the modem up to work on their service? Having to deal with their shoddy customer support ALONE is a good CON to list for the product if that's the case. Or can this modem "clone" the vital info of your current cable modem such that it's a seamless transition?

We've had cable and broadband here for eons so it's very saturated and you're lucky to get nice speeds. To set up the modem all you have to do is plug it in, then a comcast page comes up, you put in your account number, and it configures. Takes about 15 minutes. The DOCIS as I understand it (without researching it) are like bandwidth pipelines allowing you to achieve speeds much higher than on the print of your contract. Last but not least the issue with throttling only comes up if you abuse your service. It's silky smooth here.

Running torrents with a solid 20Mb down, I'd imagine it wouldn't take but a few days for you to hit that 250GB limit. Then get ready to go back to dial-up! :)

Seriously, though--are you sure they ONLY throttle you if you're tagged as an abuser/reach the 250GB limit? Because I know they sell tiers of service: 2Mb, 6Mb, and 12Mb. So I know they at least do throttling if you're on a lower tier. But maybe if you're on the 12Mb plan, they let you run as hot as your signal and hardware let you? Dunno--I wish someone who knew definitively would chime in.

I doubt Comcast wants to disclose exactly how they throttle people. I've never experienced it.
