Of course, you didn't hear anything about that here because Mr. Evil Avatar "doesn't think the Nintendo DS gives gamers what they want."
In fact, I'm almost the only person regularly posting DS news around here.
It kinda bugs me.

I can safely say that getting a DS Lite made my life a lot happier. The DS has some great games, but the original form factor was pretty uncomfortable, and the weight of the thing made it easy to fatigue your hands when you played a button-intensive game.
On the plus side, all of the gamer dorks that I see on my commute freak out over it the same way they did when I first got my PSP. Besides, now my girlfriend can steal my DS for WarioWare action without me getting frustrated. ;-)

Guess I'll be getting a black version. Yay for spending cash on stuff I don't need.

Is this a better 'gaming' system than the PSP? A friend of mine was asking about a portable gaming system. Which would be the best? For £99 it seems good value.

Morratut, most people will probably tell you to get the DS. But it is best to do your own research and then form your own opinion on the subject. Because the DS and the PSP are pretty different.
On Topic: Why does it have to cost more then the US one?

Morratut: Depends on what your friend is looking for. The DS is a lot more friendly to someone with less time to devote in a single sitting, and the hardware is designed for longevity. The PSP is finally starting to come into its own game-wise, but the barrier of entry is pretty rough cost-wise. If you want to do anything with the wifi connection (downloadable content, homebrew) or the multimedia capabilities, you'll have to drop another 50-100 bucks on storage media.
Personally, I feel the DS feels more like a handheld system should. The PSP tries to hard to bring the 'console' experience to a handheld, and I don't think it translates well enough.

WTH, have you been reading any threads on this site? There are a lot of DS items being discussed. Just becuase there's no front page news doens't mean it's not popular.
Besides Evil is not the only editor on the site. This anti-anything bias here has gone a little too far.

I'm all for black. Is Nintendo screwin' the poo...nintendogs by offering all these different colors in all these different regions?

As Bap pointed out, there was a news item. Plus, there is a rather long thread (http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12858) with people praising the new game and giving impressions. It was on the side bar all last week.
For some reason this site now has a reputation of Nintendo bashing when for the last several months there has been nothing but praise for Nintendo.
Now Sony, well, they haven't been getting much love from anyone as of late.

The screen brightness on the DS Lite makes it an amazing improvement on the original. I know a lot of you have probably seen the video comparisons, but when you put your old DS next to a light, the difference is just incredible. And the battery lasts way longer on the light. My regular DS goes about 9 hours, the DS light goes about 17 or so. With these improvements, the DS becomes not only the system with the better gaming library, it becomes the better portable hardware. Try playing either the original DS or the PSP outside on a sunny day. It is virtually impossible to see the screen on either. But when you turn the DS Lite up to the brightest setting, you can actually see the screen. So the improvements are not just aesthetic, they effect the functionality as a portable system.
If the PSP ever goes down in price to the $150 mark or so, I will probably consider it and there certainly have been a number of cool games coming out recently (Megaman, Daxter, Syphon Filter) and the future looks even better with a New Ghost and Gobblins and Ractchet on the way. But I think it should definitely be a "second" portable system (if anyone needs such), not the first. The DS is more portable and durable (clamshell means you can toss it just about anywhere), the battery life with the Lite now basically quadruples that of the PSP, and screen brightness means it can actually be used outside during the daytime. With the Xbox, Gamecube and PS3 I would definitely agree with the sentiment that which one you would enjoy the most would depend on the type of games you prefer. With the PSP and DS I don't even see that question as relevent. The PSP has had some nice improvements, but the DS is still the superior portable system regardless of gaming preferences both in terms of portable hardware and in terms of software library.

I can deal with things coming out a little later, but I really hate having to pay more for them.

The only problem I have with the DS is lack of RPGs. Not the the PSP has many either, but I don't see many I want coming out until early next year. That, and I hate Nintendo for releasing a new, superior version of their hardware right after I buy the older unit. So much more comfortable and brighter....DAMN YOU!

With nintendo ripping off Apple so much, you think they would release the black as well as the white color in the US....hell they could really rip off apple and charge extra for the black DS...heh.

RPG's don't make it to the handhelds too much because most people just want quick little spurts of gameplay. not super long gameplay sessions. But there have been some great RPGs released on the GBA that you could play on the DS like Golden Sun, Kingdom Hearts and several FF games.

If you like RPG's you can also fall back on the GBA lineup since the DS will play them. I've been enjoying the hell out of Final Fantasy 1, 2, & 4. You can also play the Golden Sun games. They are both very good.

The completely overhauled Final Fantasy 3 remake is coming out in September. That's probably as significant of an RPG release as you can get on a handheld system.

also i recomend trying some of the Castlevania games on GBA...they are fantastic and while not traditional RPG's, they do borrow the leveling up and items and all the jazz...but the action is all whipin' and jumpin' like it should!
