It's more correct to call gangsters redneck-wannabes. Black culture in particular has inherited and lives out to this day the Southern redneck culture that originally came from attitudes carried to America by northern Brits who emigrated from England and settled mostly in the south. Likewise, what has been called "ebonics" has nothing to do with "African speech patterns", and itself too are a set of verbal tendencies and grammar-constructions that existed in Northern England and were carried here by English emigrants.

It's a culture that believed in personal honor, and even honor killings over just about anything else--such things had widespread social approval. A personal slight was reasonable pretext for immediate explosion into violence--just as we see today in gang cultures.

Here's one humorous, though black, anecdote from the book:

Taking a steamer in the deep south long ago was actually incredibly dangerous. As many as 30% of all steamboats were destroyed well before their expected lifetime, because of the Southern culture. You see, these southern rednecks loved to race them. In their zeal to achieve speed, they often disabled safety features and locked-down pressure-release values. Either they'd run the boat aground and sink it, or the boiler would explode, killing everyone aboard.

So, in this particular incident, two steamboats met and the beer drinking rednecks urged the captain to begin a race. He didn't want to, but they pulled guns on him, the other boat did likewise, and the race began.

On this particular boat was a grandmother who'd traveled to town to purchase large amounts of bacon to salt up and store, w/e. As the race began and everyone began hooting and hollering, the two boats raced at full steam and were neck and neck. Below were slaves feeding coal and wood into the boiler, and the granny urged them to throw her bacon into the boiler. Sure enough, their boat began to pull ahead.

Then the boiler on the other boat exploded. Body parts rained down around them, some 30 people died. They just laughed and celebrated, and the granny yelled out over and over, "Was my bacon that did it!"

It was this same culture of honor that led to the Hatfields vs the McCoys, though that was a Scottish culture, although North Britain and south Scotland are basically the same place in that day and age.

The Scottish later cast off that culture, become enthralled with education, and became a leading intellectual center of Europe, the world even. But the people who emigrated to America from there did so before that cultural shift and continued the ancient Scottish, redneck culture into America.

This culture was an anti-intellectual culture, few could read. It was also a lazy culture, disdaining work, and even more so when slavery became widespread in the antebellum South.

Black Americans inherited this culture from white Southern rednecks and continue it today. And it's deeply ironic when Black school children harangue other Black school children who do well in school by saying they're "acting white", when those who are held to be "authentically Black" are acting out a white redneck subculture transplanted from England, both in values and in speech.
