View Full Version : Scott Miller on E3

Scott Miller (3D Realms) offers his thoughts on E3 in his blog (http://dukenukem.typepad.com/game_matters/2006/05/brand_new_brand.html). Here's a taste:

Saw the Turok demo, and WTF? It was a 3 minute slide show! Doesn't even star a Native American -- they've gone the nameless soldier route. Guaranteed failure.Oh, and heard a LOT of negative comments about the Wii controller from developers who messed with it. Be very worried, Nintendo. Didn't get to see it myself because I didn't have 2+ hours to wait in line. What a dumb way to run a booth, meanwhile the open booths of Sony and Microsoft I explored fully.E3 didn't impress this guy. Maybe they should have shown Duke Nukem Forever to spice things up...

Personally, I would rather see a blog from George Broussard. George always struck me as more of a "gamer" than Scott.

Personally I'd rather George and Scott have sex with each other until blod vessels in their brains pop and they die of aneurisms.

This guy obviously suffers from the "Evil Avatar" syndrome. Defined by the inability to see any good in anything Nintendo does or sells. His opinion matters about as much to me as the release of his next game.

At what point of not releasing anything for play does a company like 3D Realms stop being considered a video game developer and start being considered a welfare organization for incompitent artists & programmers?

No, no, no. That's any good that Sony does, which there is none, so there are no worries.

Someone from 3DRealms is complaining about a long wait? Oh the irony.

Oh Scott, how do you do it? Every time you or George open your mouths it's a criticism to some other manufacturer that actually produces a product or service. Somehow this is so fitting, though.

Is there anyone at 3drealms that isn't arrogant? I suppose they are rightfully so. I mean, how many devs do you know that can get paid for hours and hours of 'work' and have nothing to show for it?

He said other developers were not impressed with the Wii control pad, not he wasn't...

He seemed just as jaded as 90% of this site. Every cries for game innovations, then we get the same games, but with a new control pad and it is all gravy.

He isn't a fanboy, he seemed to hate everything.

Prey is looking pretty sweet.

It's too bad that Human Head developed Prey and NOT 3D Realms. 3D Realms is publishing the game though.

Also I think this is a cry for attention from 3D Realms. "Please pay attention to us. We used to make games!"

I agree about the Turok demo. It was sort of slapdash - they ushered us in and then said, "have a seat" which apparently meant, "park your ass on the carpet wherever you want, cause each spot is equally uncomfortable". Hey - at least i got a tee shirt.

On a brighter note, the Gears of War demo was jaw dropping.

And my flamebait for the day goes out to sony fanboys who wagged their heads in dismay at some of our decisions to buy into the *** hype and pick up a 360. I played a couple PS3 games at this E3, and they sure look fun. Fun and familiar. Yup, they look just like the games I've been playing since last November.

For a company that has reached the "automatically funny" status, in that the mere mention of their name is a joke itself (see: Gallagher), Miller and Broussard sure don't mind shitting all over everyone else's work.

Maybe they're nice guys in person, but they sure act like assholes when they're at a keyboard.

I don't think 3D Realms has any space in the world of gaming to talk about not liking anything they see at E3.

Like, for reals. How long has Duke Nukem Forever been in development?

gzsfrk
05-15-2006, 02:44 PM
Anything Scott Miller says critical of another developer is strictly laughable. 3D Realms is now and forevermore the laughing stock of the gaming industry, followed by anything Romero has touched since he left id for a distant second.

Scott is full of it. Period.

This E3 was killer. Who the FUCK said the Wii controlers were horrible? I played it. Everyone else who played it loved it. Sure it needs tweaking but people dug it. End.

Its just hilarious to read shit like this from someone who hasnt even released a 3d game or even any product for that matter in years.

I was talking about the Man and not the site. If you've been around for a few years you would know that Evil Avatar (the man) criticizes everything that comes out of Nintendo (something about the DS failing because it doesn't have any features that any gamer actually wants).

Yes, if you've been reading the site over the past week or 2 you would think that things around here are pretty pro-nintendo but that is a VERY recent development.

Meh, whatever:

where I discuss why our industry would be better off making original brands, versus turning to licenses so darn often, as if we do not have a creative mind of our own.

Then why does he keep bitching about Duke Nukem Forever? Even if it should turn up one day, it's anything but creative or original.

Overall impressions. There are a LOT of games that I would not have green-lit.

No shit. When DNF finally comes out, it probably took him at least 12 years to green-lit his own game.

A lot of clueless publishers thinking their little me-too game with a few changes here and there are going to carry the day. Um... no. Money down the drain.

Didn't get any further than this one, can someone beat him to death with a Wii controller?

Wow, what an absolute assclown. How about you and your team actually develop a game and release it before spouting off on others, hmm Scotty boy? This E3 was absolutley amazing (aside from the turd that was the sony showing e.e ) for gamers and I for one am excited as can be for the Wii and future 360 games. When DNF is released from this joker and doesn't suck then he can criticize all he damn well pleases. Until then he needs to shut up and get back to "work" on his "game".

Wow, coming from someone who can't even make ONE game his opinion is really valid. Of course, now 3D realms has some competition for best Vaporware in the form of StarCraft: Ghost. DNF has a great lead and some really incompetent leadership but maybe SC: Ghost can catch up!

So then, what do you think about the Nintendo DS? Because if you honestly believe the DS is failing because it doesn't provide what gamers want, that would be a strange opinion with things as they stand, regardless of your overall view of Nintendo.

MajSheppard
05-15-2006, 03:25 PM
You know what I noticed. It seems that people wait until the E3 dies down to speak smack about others. Like then it is legit because they waited until it was over. I think it odd that you can be so wise about something you didn't even play because you were too lazy to wait in line.

Not famous enough to cut the line angers you doesn't it?

I am going to listen to the hundereds of people who were excited about the Wii instead of your crazy rant.

I wouldn't be surprised if that guy went and killed himself now. There is no way to come back from an owning like that.

I don't think SC: Ghost counts as vaporware anymore, since I'm pretty sure it got cancelled. Whereas DNF is "still in development."

You know, the difference between Miller/George and Romero is that even Romero has produced SOMETHING since the catastrophe that was Ion Storm. Err, Scott and George have made... what in the past how many years?

When Romero smack talks I know he's a punk, but at least he's still putting his money where his mouth is.

This guy is a retard, plain and simple. First, there was no need to wait on a 2 hour line, or more ... if he had ANY clout (or an exhibitor badge ... which he should have, being that Prey was on the floor), he could get in with no wait. I saw the thing on Wednesday and Thursday after a 15 minute waits (tops).
Plus, the Nintendo booth was run very well. They were careful of how many people to let in to avoid a mob scene. Did he NOT see all those people on line (the 6 hour line)? Imagine if they were all in that booth at once? Fool.

Personally, I thought the Wii was great! Many people obviously agree having played it. However, he DID NOT play it, yet posts this BS opinion.

Fact of the matter is, Scott Miller and his "larger than life" pal need to STFU and finish their game. No more blabbing about other developers (who finished games) until they finish their's, and ensure their game is 1/4 as good as they hype it to be.

I believe SC:G has been moved to "next gen" development. At least, that was the latest I had read. I played the multiplayer last September at conference and it was actually pretty fun. It seemed polished and ready to roll. I guess the single player is where they are sucking.

I think the N64 was a steaming pile of obsolete crap from the day it launched yet I love the GC, GBA, DS and will soon put some sweet, sweet lovin' on the Wii. Does that make me anti-Nintendo, a hypocrite or both? I know people who wouldn't pee on Bill Gates if he was on fire yet they love their XB. There is no law that says you have to blow bubbles about everything a company does. Picking and choosing is fine and dandy.

I've never noticed an anti-Nintendo slant on this site and I've been around damn near forever it seems. What I have seen is opinions of all shapes and sizes and volumes. You make it sound as if Evil is not allowed a disenting opinion because he owns the site. Sheesh.

I agree with you GunnyMo about the N64...I still think Mario64 is far far far far away from where the Super Mario universe should be going...

I also felt that the PS2 was overhyped crap...the DC was certainly as capable...minus the DVD situation...The PS2 felt sluggish and archaic the first time I turned it on.

And I was only responding to the fact that there seemed to be a smackwar coming around...he's free to have his opinion, obviously, but I thought his defense of his statement about the SP was a little over the top...but then again, it's gotta be tough to be a Nintendo hater (for the most part) these days...I am really happy to see Nintendo making a comeback from out of nowhere. I remember when people wrote them off when the GC was released. I'm just glad to see them kicking ass...

And the GC was really a tighter system that the PS2...fixed all the issues I had with the PS2 (the GC is snappy, smart, and once they got divx involved, a perfect gaming system).

What I look forward to the most is the ability to play lightgun games on my HD system finally...I don't need HD gaming if it looks good (FZero looked great), but I really am sad that I can't play any of my TimeCrisis games anymore. Namco should really look into releasing their gun games for the Wii...I own them all and would buy them all over again if I could actually play them on my TV!

You can complain about a company's decisions and practices all you want, but when you make stupid blanket statements like, "The Nintendo DS has no features gamers want" right before it launches, and then not long after when that statement proves totally false by the DS being one the fastest selling handhelds in history, at least have the balls to admit you have no clue what you're talking about.

Simple as that.

I certainly don't agree with what Scott Miller has to say. I hope George Broussard isn't as dismissive of other companies' games. I'd love to hear what bad things these so called developers had to say about Nintendo. But in all honesty, Nintendo Wii would be fine with mainly its first party games and a hand full of 3rd party titles from mainly Japanese companies (Capcom comes to mind first) so the "Be very worried, Nintendo" is a tad overdramatic.
