Here is a thread (http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&message.id=358886&view=by_date_ascending&page=1) which has SCEA official images of the 2005 PS3 and the 2006 PS3. It's changed quite a bit since last E3.

Jeez... the new one is like one big vent hole. Seems quite a bit larger as well, which is surprising since it was pretty big to begin with.

Friends of mine who have to sit next to PS3 dev kits all day tell me that its quite loud too. I imagine that even the final hardware will have to struggle to be quiet and not overheat. Should be do-able though.

I have no idea why people complain about noise factor on their console/PC. Like, wtf. Do you play with your ear up against the vents with the game volume muted? Are you up past your bedtime and your mom is going to come down to the basement and give you hell about it?

my PC is on 24/7. which is why i complain about it's noise.
consoles though? i agree with you completely. with sound on its impossible to hear the noise - and i have a mega-loud notebook.
Busted_Astromech
05-13-2006, 11:23 AM
No, but you can complain because the noise is noticeable during quiet moments in a game--and this can be the trigger that sucks you out of the action to realize, "oh, that's right, my PS3 is LOUD."
Chameleo
05-13-2006, 11:26 AM
Oh. heh, yeah that's true. hehehe...
funny when you're totally immersed in the action, and you hear this loud fan whirring around you. For a millisecond you think its from the game, and then you realize its your blow-drier console about to overheat and shut down. hahahaha

I haven't seen much mention of this issue, but it sure seems like analysts and Sony fanboys were pretty critical of the original Xbox due to its size and the footprint it left on tv stands, saying that was part of the problem with Xbox sales numbers in Japan. If Japanese gamers have such a problem with the size of home electronics, why the heck is nobody saying this will be an issue for the PS3? The only thing I can think of is that the Japanese market is gaga for Sony (and of course, Nintendo)...brand blindness, not consumer choice and individual thought.

Looking good, looks real now instead of an obvious mockup.
What'd we lose? 2 rear USB, 1 or 2 hdmi-out(depending on model), and one network jack. Gained a couple indicator lights on the front, a more substantial base, and lots of vents to prevent meltdown after 12 hours of mgs4.
Where is the transformer for the ps3, is it a brick, or is it internal?

So, did a Sony Exec quote this? Or did the poster come up with it? I can't figure out whether it's a knock on Nintendo or a knock on Sony.

I'm going to re-post my comments from another thread here, as I think they fit in this thread pretty well, and hopefully add to the discussion...
The key distinctions in my mind between the PS3 and 360 are the following:
1. The 360 allows the consumer to choose a cheaper version which is actually upgradeable, and allows the consumer to forgo paying for an expensive DVD format (since it's an accessory, so consumers can defer the choice and see who wins the format war for DVDs. If Blu-ray loses, all the PS3 purchases have spent about $200 extra on their system for a useless technology). Also, Sony's Turd pack, the supposedly cheaper version, is permanently crippled and they are forcing their Blu-ray format down the throats of every purchaser, with no real-world benefit for the consumer and all the benefit for Sony if their format wins.
2. MS has a real, time-tested, fun, engaging online community in Live; Sony has talked of matching or surpassing Live's experience, but until they do, their track record causes me to be skeptical (and that's being kind...they're really full of %&$* until they back up their talk on this).
3. Most games in this generation will be multiplatform, with only a rare few third-party titles becoming exclusives (and, of course, first-party titles will be exclusives). With games and systems as expensive as they are, most people have modest game collections anyway, and most people will only own one or, rarely, two systems. Considering price and online attributes, I'd choose 360 in a heartbeat over the PS3
I own a 360, I'll be getting a Wii when it comes out, and I hope Blu-ray fails (though I don't believe it would be good for the industry if Sony and the PS3 as a game console failed).

The Xbox has to stay in it's horizontal position. The PS2/PS3 does not. MS adressed this problem with the 360.

The PS3 has a rounded body, which will make it a fairly uncomfortable fit, whether horizontal or vertical.
Either way, I think it's a double-standard on the part of Sony fanboys, and even analysts, who decried the size and design of the original Xbox, primarily for its bulk and not horizontal/vertical issues, and have yet to deal with the obvious heft of the PS3.
Johan
05-13-2006, 02:55 PM
Also, due to its rounded body, good luck stacking another component with it when it is horizontal...you'll need to balance it really well with some lego blocks or something, or it'll roll all over the place.
Stupid design and a double-standard; if heft sucks for the Xbox, it oughta suck for the PS3 too.

The cheapter PS3 has a fixed 20GB hard drive...it cannot be removed, swapped or upgraded (as opposed to both versions of the 360, which can be functionally equivalent if the consumer chooses).

I was told by a PS3 rep at E3 that it was upgradable. Take from that what you will.

The PS3 has USB ports which could be put to use for upgradeable HDD, Wi-Fi, and adapters for memory sticks for the 20gb version. Hell since I think they said the HD-DVD player for the 360 was going to connect through USB, couldn't we assume something of that nature could be put in for hdmi support for the 20gb ps3..?
Please tell me I'm not the ONLY one who has thought of this.

I believe that external hard drives have to be programed into the OS. There is no indication that the PS3 can do this.
For example, can you save things to a Hard Drive plugged into your PS2?

The OS (assuming it is the same OS on both versions) should be able to support external HD's because that's basically what memory sticks are. And the 60gb does support read/write on those. Even if it's not supported right now, I wouldn't imagine that being something terribly difficult to support. It would at least help Sony to defend themselves from the whole 'at least you can upgrade the 360's core version' argument.

Absolutely spot on the money! You buy the less expensive (some would say cheap) PS3, you're stuck with a 20GB hard drive. Which, like everything else PS3-related this week, is fucking baws!

I wonder how much bigger my 360 would look if it had the power supply inside. *looks at powersupply*, yeah, it would probably look like a small fridge :) So, was the power supply externalized to keep from making the mother of all fat consoles? I dunno, but whatever. :) I'm surprised the PS3 isn't even bigger, looking at the new gargantuan BD/HDDVD players out there...
Has the 20gig drive been confirmed to not be removable? I'm hearing different.

I know you've had a tough week, so I'll break it to you gently (highlight the text in the box):
In addition, the lower-end model also lacks WiFi and the slot for Memory Stick Duo cards included in the full-spec PS3.
A Sony representative on the show floor at E3 also emphasized that gamers won't be able to upgrade the memory of the 20GB version; if that's the PS3 incarnation you opt for, you're permanently stuck with a 20GB memory limit.
Amazingly, Sony big boss man Phil Harrison, in a BBC interview earlier this week, insisted, "What we should be clear about is that the functionality is identical in both machines. There is no difference in what the machine does."
Unfortunately, the actual facts seem to suggest otherwise.

No, not that tough, honestly. Call it mildly annoyed at some of the childish crap - it's not like I don't agree with some of the sentiment :)
The rep talking about memory could be talking about memcards, no memslots, no memory upgrade? Of course I could be reading into it.

My guess is Sony doesn't even know yet. Stuff is probably not finalized. They are in scramble mode and communication channels aren't their top priority.

The power supply unit of PS3 is internal. The quietness is equal to the PS2.
Which is cool, because the 360 sounds like a 747 in my room. After all this time, however, it doesn't bother me anymore as I really don't notice it when I've got my hands tied with Oblivion, so there's something to be said for that :)

Sony has also told us a large number of untruths.
I'm now of the mind that I don't believe anything Sony says until I can see it for myself.
