Marvel Super Hero Squad: Infinity Gauntlet NYCC 2010 Preview

You’ve no doubt seen the toys. Perhaps you have even caught an episode of the cartoon on television. Hasbro has hit pay dirt with the super-deformed iterations of Marvel’s finest in toy form; but how does that translate to a console game? Griptonite had a daunting task; create my favorite Marvel story arc, The Infinity Gauntlet into a videogame. In one of the very few videogame playable demo areas where you were not barraged with elbows as people walked by or suffocated by nerd stench, we got a chance to try out Griptonite's latest.

The universe changing story arc that was The Infinity Gauntlet in Marvel Comics was a big deal. Adam Warlock, Silver Surfer, Thanos… Death herself. Marvel Super Hero Squad: The Infinity Gauntlet is a much lighter hearted affair with such tense moments as Hercules getting his fingers stuck in one of those Chinese finger stick things. It’s Thor’s birthday! A level ensues with the ultimate goal of chasing down his birthday cake while the cake does everything in its power to avoid your super hero grasp. Want a kiss from Enchantress? Race to the end of the level while avoiding all the traps and enemies to claim your prize. Throughout these levels you will be searching for the Infinity Gems that each has its own advantage to having it in your possession. Modeps was fighting in a Vs. battle and took control of Iron Man while battling Thor. He used an Infinity Gem to pause the actions of Thor, for just enough time to allow more blasting fun. Battle Doctor Doom’s Lethal Legion to prevent him from completing the Infinity Gem set allowing him to take over the world.

I had the opportunity to start off playing as Falcon teamed up with Thor in what was an Asgard-like environment. Later on I was She-Hulk accompanied by The Hulk in a more modern city area which modeps finished off later on. Each character has their own repertoire of skills, a basic attack, an air attack, a special move and of course the ability to jump. In total there will be 30 characters that will be available to you in the modes of play that are included. While we didn’t actually get to see any boss characters the roster of villains includes many from the top tier of the Marvel universe including Galactus, Super-Skrull, Thanos, Loki, Abomination and Doctor Doom.

If you have seen the show or toys, you know what to expect. Super deformed Marvel characters that have physiques that do not match their printed counterparts. With that in mind you can expect to see relatively basic textures and geometry in the models when compared to something such as the Ultimate Alliance series. While playing it I noticed similarities in how it plays with the Lego * series mechanics. The viewpoint changes based on the environment, sometimes it is ¾ perspective, other times zoomed in more to a side view and there are even some scenarios reminiscent of Contra (NES) end of level 3rd person action. While the mechanics are similar to the Lego series of games it is a bit more zoomed in so it feels like there is less space to work with in each level, which is not necessarily a bad thing as this game is marketing towards kids, but will interest any comic fan.

Local Drop-in and out of is included which should be standard for all current beat-em ups, so I am thankful they included it. One of the other game modes you can take part in is a race mode where you can travel around six differently configured tracks while controlling Stark Enterprises robots with various hazards you must avoid. The perspective, controls and scale looked inspired by the old Off-Road/Super Off-Road games. When asked about the environments for the tracks I was unfortunately told they are all the same, just different paths for the cars to race in which is a missed opportunity in my opinion.

Full voice acting was heard throughout the demo but because of the large amount of noise in the area I was not able to hear it all clearly while discussing the game with the person giving the demo, but expect the dialogue to be comical with a more childish slant on things. $DLC/DLC was discussed with respect to costumes and various additions to the game, though no definite price point or content was given, just examples of possible content.

If you are not expecting a serious story, or blood and gore and like comics, this game should be right up your alley. This game is intended for the younger crowd but should still be interesting enough for comic fans to want to take a shot at it.

Unfortunately you aren't actually racing with your character; you are basically shown at some kind of Stark Enterprises electronic console with a joystick, etc and your hands move around while little robots race around the super offroad looking tracks.

Also to note, couch co-op only.

Based on the audience this game is for that was probably an easy choice for them

I played it at NYCC and was really impressed at the quality and depth. My 8yr old will love it and frankly there is not a great selection of games for kids under 12 this year. What I like it the co-op option, cool story and that they have Nova and Quicksilver. Well played THQ!
