Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare NYCC Preview

Shamble On, And now's the time, the time is now, to sing my song.

After getting acquainted with the very large and crowded New York Comic Con show floor, we made our way to the first appointment which was Rockstar's Read Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare. Meeting producer Rich Rosado, we were given a quick rundown as to what the deal was with this piece of $DLC as well as got a bit of hands-on time with it. There's one minor story spoiler here, so please be wary of that.

Undead Nightmare takes place towards the end of the campaign while John Marston is back on his homestead. While the time spent teaching young Jack how to hunt and herd cattle is only a handful of missions long, it actually spans several months, allowing Rockstar to add a side-story in. They want users to experience this add-on for themselves so many of the specifics were left out, but the intention is that Undead Nightmare is a fun aside that'll give fans of the game a bunch of new stuff to do within the confines of the world, both single and multiplayer. The jist is that some bad stuff starts happening, and you get pulled into it.

The hands-on portion of the game itself was a fairly simple horde mode equivalent. As Marson, you walk into a cemetery and set fire to a coffin that's laying in the middle. I wasn't entirely sure what time of day it was due to a new misty overtone everything had, but possibly either at dusk or dawn. Once the first coffin is ablaze, you're greeted with some of the "locals" who aren't very happy with your actions and your next task is to light off several other pine boxes that are scattered throughout the graveyard while fighting off the shambling night-crew.

To assist you with some of the messy work, you've got a sweet new weapon: the blunderbus. It functions similarly to the current shotguns but basically turns your enemies into a red mist at close range. Pretty awesome. It's particularly helpful as it seems as though there are different attack styles of the new enemies. At a distance they move like your typical, slow Dawn of the Dead zombies but as they close in, they'll pick up their pace and start to swarm. There's even at least one variation zombie which when knocked down, will emit a noxious plume after a few seconds, area of effect style. After burning all the boxes, a final zombie climbed out of the ground and after taking care of him, I had to clean out the graveyard, and that was the end of the demo. The graveyard itself was a fairly small area, but it wasn't confined which felt a bit odd considering the game would give you a warning if you backed yourself out too far.

I asked about the lovely Bonnie MacFarlane, concerned about her well being considering this new threat on the land, and it was suggested that I swing by and find out for myself (in the full version). When pressed further, Rosado revealed that they've been working on this for quite some time, and have examined a ton of different locales asking the question "What would this area look like?" Thieves Landing was already a fairly dark place to begin with so I'm anxious to see how it looks after the zombies hit. From the sounds of it, most of the world has been retouched to give it a creeptastic vibe. Even the menus have been updated to utilize a new font, and when you die the screen displays "UNDEAD" in a toxic green.

There's still no release date announced, but we're expecting that information soon. I'd personally hope this would drop on, or just before Halloween. Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare will cost $10 when released through Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network.
