1UP (http://www.1up.com/) is reporting (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3150631) that Golden Axe is making a return to the PS3 and Xbox 360.
Sega announced today the return of Golden Axe, the fan favorite hack-n-slash adventure game first made popular in arcades in 1989. Slated to hit PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2007, the Golden Axe next-gen project comes from Secret Level, a developer Sega recently acquired.
While next to no details have been revealed about the next-gen incarnation of Golden Axe, a teaser trailer for the game will be shown at the E3 show...
Very nice, so where's the updated version of Altered Beast to go with it?

I love Golden Axe as much as the next guy, but this is sadly going to end up being another Gauntlet sized failure. Altered Beast did in fact have a recent sequel on the GBA, and it sucked. Trying to resurrect classics out of the blue rarely produces acceptable results.
I'd happily be wrong, though.

You never know, could all depend on the dev. Altered Beast on GBA was more of...well, the same. Which is what GBA owners wanted short of a port.

True, I love my GBA specially for "more of the same"... but the difference is the new Altered Beast simply wasn't very good.

I thought the EA LOTR Games were kind of like a modern Golden Axe, maybe this will be like that.

I just want a faithful port of the arcade Golden Axe. I spent hours at an arcade in Ocean City, MD many summers ago playing that thing till I beat it. It loved that game.

I love Golden Axe, but I'm not holding my breath (aka the ps2 Altered Beast and Vector Man sequels that never came out).
I would really like a good D&D-style 3d beat 'em up. My problem with Gauntlet/D&D Heroes/Baldur's Gate:DA/etc is that there's no technique. You simply mash X to swing, and mash R1 to refill your life gauge with the 50 potions you're somehow carrying. The EA LotR games tried, but I didn't really care for the strict combo timing and rigid animation - made it really frustrating and annoying to play. God of War combat in the Golden Axe universe would be cool.

vectorman was my FAV! I was crushed when the sequel was canned--it seemingly featured fully destructable environments ALA red faction--too bad the game looked to have lost most of its "style" and "character", but since its been long cancelled, thats neither here or there.
as for the new golden axe, I just hope they make it longer than the original. even as a kid I would yell: "that's it?!? we haven't been here for more than a couple hours!"

The retro trend doesn't always mesh well with the technophile gaming culture of today. The old-style games were designed to match the current hardware of the time, and many of them included design decisions that were a direct result of those limitations. Trying to recreate those games using current-gen technology is just futile for the most part (look at Gauntlet, NARC, Altered Beast, etc.). Just about the only exception is driving games like OutRun and Spyhunter, but really, all you need to do to update a driving game is upgrade the graphics/physics. Hack 'n slash, shooters, etc. have changed WAY too much as the hardware has changed.

Very good point, but I think Golden Axe could be an exception. It has enough elements that could be included to make it obvious that it's a Golden Axe game while completely updating the gameplay. I'm thinking about the three classic characters, the enemy designs, the magic, hitting those little guys to make them drop potions and riding on the dragons and battle chickens.

It was released in Japan! Rise from you grave! I wonder if they kept the homosexual undertones...
