So, has anyone figured out how to properly divert water? I got a lake near my fortress, and no matter what I do, I can't get the water to flow more than a little bit out. It'll always degrade till it just stops.

Instead of diverting the water, I fashioned a pair of pails and decided to scoop and transport water to my moat, and to a bathtub on my second floor. More than a bucket's worth of water was transported for sure, and now that I know how it works, I feel better about potentially creating some awesome underground streams.

hah Finally took a shot at this this morning. Things were moving slow until I realized you had to hold left-click to harvest. Now that I see the possibilities and have a basic grasp of the crafting system, I don't even know what I want to do first. Enjoying my cool little snowy mountains world.
Seems like it'd be more fun online though. Building your own castle is great and all, but I'd like to wander around and see other people's works. Is it still possible to get multiplay in with the account system not working? Are there any official EvAv servers running?

I am so sad that you can't make infinite lave pools, had a castle with a lava moat, but for some reason the save file got deleted, maybe caused by server downtime?

Water (and Lava) will always form a stream unless there's two or more water/lava spring tiles next to it. It's a little wonky, but basically if you dump three buckets of water like this:
X X
X
then that middle space will get totally filled with water like:
XXX
X
I don't think
X
X
will fill any tiles, but:
X X
I think does.
Obviously you have to be careful doing this with lava.
The penny arcade comic sums this game up perfectly.
Seriously awesome little game with lots of potential. Buy it!

Still water is made of water blocks, which kinda act like infinite water springs. Place a block on land and it tries to create a waterfall of sorts. It doesn't behave realisitically, but hey.

Yeah, that will be horrible. I might start making "lamps" out of magma though.

The stinkin' torches better stay lit dangit. Also, i think you might be able to use a bucket and lava to make a killer heat source for the kiln. I keep dying on my way back up because skeletons are coming in from somewhere.
Are trap doors (horizontal) available yet? Probably the best use of redstone and magma I can think of yet. Should be perfect for killing off creepers.
Edit: removed one "probably".

I think objects like stairs and doors take a little longer to destroy to prevent accidently removing them. Stairs should dissolve into one block of whatever you made it out of when demolished.
Use a pickaxe for stone stairs, and an axe for wooden.

Yeah I think stairs specifically are a little bugged. I've found that I'll accidentally destroy blocks behind the stairs so I believe that the hitbox is little messed up. If you put another block on top of the stairs, they'll go away completely, allowing easy removal.
I'm pretty sure it was working Sunday and Monday.

Dropbox + Minecraft = Portable saves.
I'm on a Mac sometimes, and on a PC other times.
Here are some steps to set it up on a Mac.
Signup with Dropbox (http://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTExNDIyMzk) (yes, that's a referral, yes we both benefit from it with extra space, yes it's free) and install the client application on your machine.
Locate your Minecraft Save directory, it's probably in /Users/YOURUSER/Library/Application Support/minecraft and move the whole directory into your Dropbox folder, which is probably /Users/YOURUSER/Dropbox/.
Create a symbolic link through the console to the Dropbox save folder
ln -s /Users/YOURUSER/Dropbox/Minecraft/saves /Users/YOURUSER/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves
Now, Dropbox will auto-sync to their service, which auto distributes to any computer you've got the application running on, and Minecraft thinks the saves are still where they should be, but they're really not.
I've been told by Corwiniii that there's a symlink style application for Windows that'll make creating them real easy, but I've yet to explore that avenue.

So I realized last night that I made the most rookie of all rookie mistakes. My first world that I made was a snow world, lucky me. I had established a nice base with a mineshaft, farm, and had worked up a lot of good resources. I decided I was going to establish an underwater fortress out in the ocean a little ways away from my base camp. Heading out onto the ice, I cut a hole and saw it quickly ice over again. This won't do, I will need to surface quite a bit to breathe. I place a cobblestone block on the ice and surround all sides of the block with torches. The ice all around the block starts to melt but the block stays put. Success! I dive down only to realize that my icebreaker is over a very uneven floor bed and to the side is some flatter areas. A smart person would've surfaced and moved the icebreaker so that it was over the workspace. Not me ... After a few failed attempts to time breath with swimming diagonally to the surface, I drown. No problem right? I realize then that this was my first death and the surroundings of my spawn point do not look familiar. Is that a torch in the distance? No. Where is my home base? Maybe if I look out on the water I will find my ice breaker. Surely that is the easiest way. No dice. After wandering for a half hour or so I realize that I traveled entirely too far from my spawn point when choosing a base.
Rookie mistakes ... rookie mistakes.

I foresee this being an isue for me also. I started my current save game about a week ago, and I haven't died yet. I remember spawning in an area that was not suitable for building, so I wandered around for a while (going island to island) before I came across landscape that I found acceptable. When I eventually die, I'm going to be completely screwed. I put a ton of torches on the highest landmark on my island, but I'm sure I still won't be able to find it.

After wandering for a half hour or so I realize that I traveled entirely too far from my spawn point when choosing a base.
Rookie mistakes ... rookie mistakes.
Did that too. Like 3 times. I wasn't aware there was a fixed "spawn point"; I wasn't really sure WHAT the logic was... I didn't recognize the spawn point as being where I started, since I immediately ran around like a schmuck the first time, so I assumed it was random within a radius of my corpse, or something.
Once I realized the simple nature of how it works, it was too late: I'd already established (yet another) rather sweet mountain side retreat...
So I thought I'd get smart. I'd build a huge ass tower, and plant torches all around it, up high, like I was trying to keep airplanes from hitting it or something! I'd see it at night. It was tall and huge. With my view distance maxed, there's no way I could miss this, even from a distance.
So, very confidently, once I got done with this super sized tower.... I jumped.
Purposely. Because either this tower was going to work, or not, and I'm not going to invest more time in a home that I'll just lose. Again.
And so I died, spawning a few dangerous minutes before sundown. Since my spawn point was rather low, with mountainous regions around me, I made my way up a hill and looked around.
Nothing.
Okay, don't panic. I'll just get even HIGHER so I can get a better view.
I'll just build a mini tower, planting dirt under my feet until I hit the sky. No problem! I'll much more easily see the direction of home, and I'll be back toiling in the mines in no time.
I look out across the now-darkness drenched landscape on my pole of dirt, my home nowhere to be seen. Shaking my head in disbelief, I realize that my big ass tower is apparently far outside even the best distance the engine will render.
The spiders and skeletons laugh at me from below.

Last night I was building an underground escape route from my castle (or, alternate entrance for whatever situation decided to present itself). I've had time's where I'd forgotten to close a door to my abode and all the sudden I've got a bunch of unwanted visitors. I had just finished the connection to a nearby beach when I saw a small depression in the earth I didn't notice before. I assumed it was made by a random exploding guy so I jumped in.
It didn't take long before I realized it wasn't a random crater, but instead a very vast cavern that went straight down for way longer than I expected. I carefully navigated the steep rock face, cutting into it when necessary and stopping to pick up some needed iron ore and coal, but it just kept going and I was on edge the entire time worrying I'd slip and fall to my death.
Finally, I hit bottom. I half expected some monsters to attack, or the cavern to just end but no such luck. It expanded into the darkness on either side of the shaft, both directions basically just kept going. I still haven't explored it all, but I've found a ton of coal and a bunch of iron just by navigating it.
Words can't really express the fear I had while going down into that darkness, or the sheer awe that something in the world like this could be randomly created by the engine.
Ive got myself a nice 5 story tower near the coast on my latest map. The map is quite frankly awesome with deep mines going far into the earth everywhere and awesome formations of land, water and lava.
My current project is to get enough glas to make an underwater room. I know how to make glas by smelting sand but how do I go about making something underwater. Do I place dirt on the bottom and than glas around it and than just hollow out the dirt or can one remove water if I first make a glasbubbel?
edit - also the stupid creeper that blows up is annoying. I've got a nice fence around my place now to keep them out but before I put that down they used to blow up my attempts at a garden :(

That is exactly how you do it. I use stone to give myself a border. Then I fill the border in with dirt and pile it up as high as I want the bubble. Then surround all the dirt with glass.
You have a couple of options of getting in. You can create an "airlock" by digging a hole just outside your stone blocks and go 2 down 2 in and then up. Or you can create a tunnel system from land (or your base if it is reasonable) and just tunnel straight up into it. Once you are inside clear out all the dirt and you are good to go.
It is also easy to expand with glass tunnels and other bubbles. Just use a stone border, fill in with dirt, surround with glass, and then break the connecting glass from inside your initial room and carve out the dirt in the expansion.

Make a sponge, it removes two tiles of water around it in all directions, permanently. Un;ess you leave spawnable water nearby.

Why not have a water passage under your barrier. I don't think monsters can go underwater, can they? That way you don't need to build or destroy anything to get in or out.

Yeah that is what I meant by "airlock". I have never seen a monster go underwater but you may not want to have a hole in the floor leading into the water or maybe you do. In my case, I decided that I wanted to have a sort of impregnable feel to it (like all glass underwater bubbles do ...) and wanted the only access to be a big tunnel from my main base. To each their own I suppose.

I love this part of it too. The unknown. Kind of how EverQuest was for me back in 1999...no maps of the lands, just memory. If you forgot how to get somewhere, then you're kind of screwed if you're in danger. What if Minecraft became an MMO and people set up towns or villages along routes to other places and to the...beyond. That would be insanely awesome. Yeah...now it will happen too :)

The death penalty in this game is incredibly harsh, they really need to tone it down. Losing everying could be devistating depending on what you are carrying. I would at least like it if your stuff just landed around where you went down and stayed out for a few days for you to collect.

I've been told by Corwiniii that there's a symlink style application for Windows that'll make creating them real easy, but I've yet to explore that avenue.
First of all, modeps gave you all the wrong dropbox link. Use THIS ONE (http://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTI4NjYyMTQ5). The other will give your machine horrible viruses, I promise.
Second, the GUI symlink program I use for Windows is Winbolic Link. It's free and simple. Select the folder to link to on the right (dropbox), and the folder to drop the link in on the left (old save location), hit "Create NTFS unction" or whatever, and you're done.
Minecraft has also taken me over. I'm playing on a private server with a bunch of friends of mine. Syltech Mining Inc' is going strong.
I think we need to set up an evav server.

Thank you for that, I built a giant potted plant and a huge bug. But I'd like to play SMP with you guys. My name is The_Gear. Alright, due to finding lava near my mining co' i decided to make a new main shaft.
I diverted the flow of lava and then created a 3x3 empty pit around an impossibly large lava waterfall. I then surrounded this 3x3 empty pit with a spiraling staircase.
Self Illuminating and awesome looking mine shaft was a complete success! I was also able to get this lava-fall to last all the way until i hit a lava lake, where i proceeded to find diamonds and redstone and all sorts of awesome stuff!

If you die your stuff sticks around for awhile. So go back and get it. If its in lava it's gone though. It's best to start close to your spawn point or make a trail or road from it so you can get back to where you were or are building. To make a road just make a long pathway that's easy to travel on.

A Biome is a just an area with specific climatic and geographical conditions. In real life its the difference in areas such as a rain forest or desert. Notch hopes to have more varied environments throughout the world as you explore instead of just small patches of sand with a cactus.

If that is the case, I can see some folks planting a farm of torches to reap the benefits. Which will only work if the lanterns work like everything else. Once destroyed/mined/beat to deat/(insert verb here), they revert back to a collectible item added to your inventory. It would be nice if this weren't the case but I can hear the rusty cogs turning from here.
Finally have my home built and will be lighting my path from spawn point this evening. I will do the right thing and place all my belongings on the shelf (think Donnie Brasko) before taking the long step off the mountain.
If I missed it in the thread, all apologies beforehand. Am I the only one that grabs my old save data before starting up? Just in case there is a crash, I do not want to have to start all over. No matter how much fun it is.

Nice pyramid Syl. Certainly is a large undertaking.
I have been playing on a private SMP server for quite some time now (since after the game went back online a few weeks ago?). Currently in SMP the most explicit bugs are: no damage, iron doors don't work, wooden doors glitch, red dust does not work, items are easily duplicated/lost, and a semi-frequent socket error (which causes items to duplicate that are in hand). Regardless, it is still fun.
We have been toying around with a very interesting mod called Runecraft. It allows for a few very interesting ideas. Namely, Teleportation waypoints, and secret/hidden doors. As well as certain temporary enhancements on tools.
I should also mention that I have not seen many of you reskinning your clients. Textures are held in your Minecraft.jar, and are completely customizable. The game creator drew the graphics is a very small resolution. It is easily changed, and redraws your tiles at 512x512 (with exception to items, since the compass and various other items do not function at anything above 256x256). Some, however, are much, much larger than 512x512. Though, they look... wonky.

I played with my two brother-in-laws (20 and 28) and 12 year old sister-in-law last night. What a blast! It's kind of a bummer that you don't take damage in multiplayer (yet) but it kind of helps while I get used to the game. The guys found a lava cave under the huge tower they built the night before and were mining minerals down there. I spent the evening working on my own shelter with it's own tower that I'll join up to their tower with a bridge. It's some serious fun.

Ahh what a good feeling. To be young in the world of minecraft yet again. I still have fun with it on an almost daily basis. It is weird because you need so little yet the game is centered around expansion. I guess I have started running into the snag where all of my creations and explorations really attribute nothing because I can not share with anyone. I am really looking forward to more solid multiplayer and new updates.
For now I sit atop my tower looking out across the ocean with my subaqua base below me, wondering why the dreaded ocean keeps putting the fire out of the scores of zombies swimming directly below me. I used to think day was my savior, now I realize it is all a curse...

I just remembered that this version we have all paid for is the alpha version. Alpha. They're not even to beta yet. Who pays $14 for a game still in alpha!?! Well, we do that's who. I can only imagine what this game will become. It's pretty exciting to be in on the ground floor...with millions of other people.
I suspect a more versatile multiplayer patch will come down the road. I spent more time on my in-laws server than my single player map. I prefer to build somewhere I can share my creation with others. You can't do that in single player other than screenshots. It just seems lonely and almost pointless. But there is a certain charm to it. Creating your lonely castle, not another person in sight. When night comes, it's just you and the undread.
I envision a day when Minecraft goes completely MMO. Although hopefully you're able to protect your creations from destruction by random players.

Anyone have any idea how big the maps are? I remember reading that the free version had a limit of 38 blocks up and down, but that limit doesn't seem to be there in the premium version (at least not when digging down). And looking at a few people blogging through their days of playing, the maps seem absolutely huge in all directions.
EDIT: Nevermind. I found a Minecraft site that isn't blocked. Apparently they're roughly 8x larger than Earth.

Yeah Notch has a youtube video up of someone with a train ride across the globe, and it is insane. I realized I have been mining and building exclusively in a zone roughly the size of a four city-street block radius. Anyway, i wish there was at least some sort of credits/trading system online at this point. I have a lot of diamonds I don't need, and if there were an easy way to trade some of it for, say, a bajillion blocks of wood it *wood* make my life easier. Yeah, i did that just there.

Just google it, it's an application and it takes a TON of time to render and get things done, but it works with singleplayer as well.
If you want to use it on a server, you have to be the host with the complete map file. Apparently the google map for our server is about 4 gigs right now, the server itself is only about 900 megs.
Also, that map just updated to some point yesterday, as my new road is finished on the map and the amount of work on the library has become rather obvious.

Right, but it's a cliche within the map industry that to have a perfect map it would have to be as big as the actual terrain it was modeling and laid over an area the exact same size. So, my comment was sort of a pun on "big"-size(disk-space) vs "big"-space(physically) :P

When it exists it will be made into a game :)
There was a dev awhile back that wanted to use Google maps to allow players to input their GPS coordinates for their house, and from that the game would go into Streetview and pull up textures of your very street to extrapolate houses and whatnot, along with the overhead view for the floorplan of your neighbohood.
So, it would recreate your neighboorhood in game, and then have zombies attack you in your own house :P How cool is that. Yet, we're really not too far from being able to do exactly that.
MIT has a program where they use GPS coordinates and an intelligent system to take hi-res photos of an outdoor area in 360 degrees and uses those images to derive architectural structure along with their textures and has done things like recreate campus digitally, polygons, buildings and all, in hi-res detail.

He says he used schematics of the model in the video I saw.
That seemed to imply outside maps, not auto-generating from some model. How would you even do that anyway.
The only really efficient way to do it would be to digitize an actual 3D model of the ship and create a voxel-map from it, then upload that.
He also said he's looking for 30 people to fill in decks :P
If you were doing this by hand it'd be a bitch, you'd need to convert units into 1 meter cubed to get close curve approximations. You could actually do that using pixellation of a picture of the ship, and each deck, on a graphics-program like Photoshop. Then just count blocks and follow the pixels as you build.
Or you could get fancy, import 3D models from some dataset, and write a converter and then run your own server.
But, consider that the model's incomplete, he didn't build in the nacelles. I can believe he did it by hand. Wouldn't take more than a couple weeks tops.
It's not really a hack, but it was made outside of minecraft in another 3D modeling program and then imported.

I didn't. But use powered minecarts to take me around when I go to the bathroom or stuff. Or just look up some sites in the mean time, it takes about 2~3 min to take me from base closest (to the spawn) base to the furthest, so it's kinda useful.

Has anyone found a legitimate use for mine carts and tracks yet in the normal game? I tried creating a simple transportation system and it's just annoying to use. I'd spend less time walking than actually moving... and powered minecarts are slower than walking anyway.
use perpetual motion minecarts so much faster and no need to use up any coal or lava etc. for fuel!
and after looking at some of the things people have created on here its made me feel like ive totally wasted my time on it :L

I just read this: The update is going well. There are six new block types (five of them have unique abilities), one new monster, a new dimension, and a couple of bug fixes. Once I get the portals working, I’ll have something very interesting going and I’ll spend the rest of the time leading up to the release adding new smaller features and polishing stuff quote is from nocht's blog here (http://notch.tumblr.com/).
I was wondering about the new dimension? and I am looking so much forward to the new blocks and some sources says that the new monster will be a shark
Let me hear your thoughts

I hate and love you minecraft. I finally got around to going the server route cause I was just not finding any iron ore. I kept finding red dust but so near the surface, I really didn't thing anything about it. I just kept mining away. So on the server, I gifted myself some iron blocks. What???? Let me begin by stating I have installed Doku's texture pack. I thought what I was mining was red dust only to find that it was IRON ORE all this fragging time. I guess I could have looked at the .png file and gotten that info. So now I shall forge my lumps and lumps of iron ore as I slowly wash the egg off of my face. Ouch. Me being lazy. meh.
Time to kill some ducks....er, chickens.

didnt think of that XD im trying to order a server now but i need to find a few things out first. As a side note we're probably going to be using a whitelist so we would need to know who might actually come on the server so we can create the list, also would anyone be willing to donate a little bit of money a year to help pay out for the costs? it doesnt have to be alot even something like 1 dollar a year would be ok just something to help ease out the costs abit.

Alright, i did a LOT of exploring on our server after the update. Some of the better stuff I saw. (Our server is pretty huge, so you have to walk an incredible distance from spawn for the new stuff)
One of the more interesting natural structures I've ever seen:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/Sylaran/Game%20Screens/th_Minecraft019.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v404/Sylaran/Game%20Screens/Minecraft019.jpg)

Incredibly tall and spontaneously floating trees!

Snow as far as the eye can see!

What are those black shapes floating in the air?
That is a problem with our server. For some reason, at the edge of the draw distance, we have floating furnaces in the air. You can never reach them, but they're always there.
It's a question for the ages. We just deal with it. Luckily the halloween update fixed our crash issues at spawn.

I'm amazed. Where do you guys go for building tips? I'm totally addicted but I dig and dig and never find diamond or dungeons or any of that other cool stuff. I'm just happy I have enough coal to keep going. HALP!
You just kinda... dig. I started theg ame with absolutely no documentation except for crafting recipes.
You find diamond and dungeons and stuff after prolonged spelunking. I have an insanely large mining complex underneath my main pyramid and surrounding area. Diamonds and redstone spawn near the lower limit, which is pretty far down. I suggest digging until you find the lava lake level and then stay around that level. I tend to have the best luck around lava lakes and they're a constant source of light!

Alright, even though that SECOND server exploded, i took a break for a few weeks and started again.
Still SMP, but now there are mobs, oh god, the mobs.
woo.
Here is the current state of my hard work.
Also some drastic confusion.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/Sylaran/Game%20Screens/th_Minecraft040.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v404/Sylaran/Game%20Screens/Minecraft040.jpg)

Here is the top of my pyramid once i filled all of it in. All the torches are on a 5x5 grid and I built a landbridge to start trying to get the thing covered in grass. It will eventually be surrounded by fence and have some water in it, as well as perhaps some glass to let light through.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/Sylaran/Game%20Screens/th_Minecraft043.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v404/Sylaran/Game%20Screens/Minecraft043.jpg)
This was a creeper caused problem when he blew up a bit of my moat. Almost caused a forest fire but me and leon got it under countrol. I have no idea if that lava will stay forever.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/Sylaran/Game%20Screens/th_Minecraft044.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v404/Sylaran/Game%20Screens/Minecraft044.jpg)
This is just a picture showing how much open space is in my mine thanks to the massive crater that was created (by griefing, long story.)

This is where my confusion is.
Do you see all obsidian? I didn't create it, there are no sources of water nearby, yet i had one (small) lava lake turn completely into obsidian (causing all sorts of monster ruckus down there) and this, much larger, lava lake is now half obsidian. What could cause this if it wasn't human? So confused.

I love it, but what pisses me off are the two dark grey stripes on top in southwest that are further apart from the rest of the stripes, thus breaking the pattern...
That was my fault for accidentally making my pyramid an odd number of blocks across. Those "grey strips" are actually the water source that supplies the waterfalls for all of the farming underneath it. Considering that you rarely ever actually see the top-view of the pyramid, keeping the efficiency of the farms up was more important to me than the aesthetics. (That one square difference enabled around 30 more squares of reeds to be grown.)

Not really. If your second to top layer is a 3x3 grid then you can put one singular block in the middle without having to make it uneven.

How are we not understanding each other here? A 3x3 grid is an odd number on both sides, exactly as I said, so that you can put a single block in the very center.
