An interesting article that compares screenshots of Super Mario 2 and Doki Doki Panic (http://nintendo.about.com/od/editorials/ss/mariocompare.htm) to see exactly what Nintendo changed before releasing the game in the U.S. and Europe. Pretty of interesting in an old-school sort of way.
Part of the point of this article is to highlight not only the things that did change, but also to highlight how little things changed. Like I said, many of the character animations stayed the same, including the way the characters look when they jump. Float Princess! Float!
In total, Nintendo changed something like 12 things, and some of the Doki Doki Panic elements carried over into later Mario games. Like the slot machine game at the end of the level, and then showed up in Mario 3, as well. That came straight from Doki Doki Panic in the original form.
