Has anyone seen this? I watched it last night and I've been scouring the internet but am more confused than ever. Hopefully some of you have seen it and wouldn't mind a little discussion.

Spoilers:
The main source of my confusion is the lighthouse where the supposed experiments and/or lobotomies take place. I'm 100% sure there are two[possibly three] different lighthouses unless it is a major fuck up. When we first see the lighthouse there is a perimeter fence with two guards and some fencing along a path in front of it. All later shots are only the perimeter fencing even when Teddy assaults the one guard who asked if he was going to kill him. This would go along with people who believe that Teddy was sane from the start. My conclusion was the typical one of him being insane then cured yet he fakes still being insane in the end to escape from himself.

I could go into it more if anyone cares to discuss but that's the main thing still blowing my mind right now.

I saw it, I thought it was pretty stupid. They break too many of their own rules. At the end they talk about him never having been left alone -- but there were multiple times where they left him alone.

I guess when the entire movie doesn't work, I don't spend a lot of time worrying about the ending.

Yeah there are a lot of loopholes but those could be contributed to how the story is structured... It was probably meant to be interpreted differently by the viewers.

I loved the movie and especially now that I can't stop thinking about it... You rarely need to put any thought in film these days.

engh...

I think any "loopholes" in the story are purely unintentional. I believe that you got all the elements that were there to get.

As for why the fence is different I think you're just looking at a continuity error. But if I was going for my Marvel Comics "no prize" for explaining it, maybe the gate was severely destroyed during the storm.

Those screen shots just made me remember how gorgeously shot that film was. It's one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen.

I'll add that I think the acting wasn't bad at all, but there was only so much they could do with such a broken and implausable story. Great movies like that you end up going back and watching it again and catching all the little details that led up to the "Ah, ha!" moment.

But, in Shutter Island there are only two details you catch on the second watch and everything else was just mush.

The Director needed to go back and watch Memento about 600 times.
