Next-Gen (http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2969&Itemid=2) brings words that Yuji Naka has left Sega to form his own company named Prope.

Apparently, Naka and Sega are still on amicable terms, as the publisher will contribute 10 percent of the studio's startup capital. Sega said that its support of the company is in line with a plan to help Sega developers form independent companies.

According to Prope's website, the name is derived from the Latin word meaning "'beside' and 'near' future."
I'm not really sure if this is good or bad for the franchise. I guess these means he hasn't had much involvement in the upcoming Sonic title. But the last few Sonic titles were forgetful anyway.

Well, considering the terms he appearently left under, I say it wouldn't be too far fetched for him to be able to use the Sonic license if he wanted to. Though, I'd say he left to escape the franchise. Hopefully we'll see good things, but I'm skeptical about anything having to do with Sega these days. Seems like I haven't gotten one good thing from them since the Dreamcast...

Quite frankly, this isn't all that upsetting, and maybe even a good thing. The Sonic series has been on a steady fall since Adventure (with the exception of the excellent GBA titles). Hopefully this means the series will become reinvented by new blood (for the better of course). My biggest gripe with the whole sonic universe now is the 10+ characters. It's just too many and waters down everything about the franchise. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and maybe Shadow. That should be it. I couldn't believe it when they announced yet another "surprise" character for the PSP Sonic Rivals in a Gamespot interview. Enough is enough!

I was never a big sonic fan anyhow. A charachter who got his start as nothing more than a placeholder doesn't seem like that great of a charachter.

but he is the placeholder with attitude!

I think Sega is involved in this as they will probably sill be the publisher of games his new studio makes, but it allows for more freedom for the devlopers, and less potential money loss for Sega. One of those good breakups where everyone gets better for it.

The only Sonic game I've ever played was the one on my Game Gear.

I'm not sure why I bothered with this post.

sonic 1 was a good distraction from mario, sonic 2 added some much needed features to the original formula and was better, the sequels on genesis were more of the exact same--with some new characters thrown in. then came the cartoon, more sequels, then the dreamcast version (which I disliked immensly). every sonic game since seems to keep the dreamcast's vision as opposed to its original roots. anyone remember Contra: Shattered Soldier? or the newly released Mario for DS? give me a sonic side-scroller and ill give it a look. otherwise, i could care less. just my thoughts on that hedgehog thing...

I really don't get it with 2d. If these machines have so much power, why hasn't there been a 2D/3D hybrid to knock my boxers off. I mean more sprite can't be added to Ryu. Cel shaded side scrollers. Something like a moving cartoon. I don't know but yeah flat isn't bad.

Didn't he just finish up Shadow the Hedgehog? I'm sorry, what has this guy done for Sonic in the past 10 years that's actaully good? I don't think I remember a really great Sonic game since the Genesis days ...

Didn't play much of it, but Sonic Rush for the DS looked pretty damn sweet. Reminded me a lot of Sonic 3 (for Genesis).

But that's how Kirby started out, and he literally sucks!

I hope this doesn't effect current games in developement, like, say, oh, Phantasy Star Universe.
