Battle for Wesnoth is a turn-based strategy game for the PC which is free to download and it has a multiplayer side as well as single-player campaigns! The game is still being worked on but a release has now been made and people are able to play it and get a taste of this great game. Here's some details:
The Battle for Wesnoth is a turn-based strategy game with a fantasy theme. Build up a great army, gradually turning raw recruits into hardened veterans. In later games, recall your toughest warriors and form a deadly host against whom none can stand! Choose units from a large pool of specialists, and hand-pick a force with the right strengths to fight well on different terrains against all manner of opposition. Fight to regain the throne of Wesnoth, of which you are the legitimate heir, or use your dread power over the Undead to dominate the land of mortals, or lead your glorious Orcish tribe to victory against the humans who dared despoil your lands … Wesnoth has many different sagas waiting to be played out. You can create your own custom units, and write your own scenarios – or even full-blown campaigns. You can also challenge your friends – or strangers – and fight in epic multi-player fantasy battles.

This game is great. If you've ever played Dark Wizard on Sega CD it's very similar!

This game is pretty good, especially for people who are too ADD to play typical turn-based strategy games, like myself.

Looks promising, I'm downloading now. I'll be back with impressions in a bit.

I love these Free Game articles. Maybe we could make it a weekly feature, like the comic book reviews? Maybe offer a bit more depth on the game and how to get it running? (Depending on the game)
There are some awesome freebies out there. eg System Shock 2 with the upgraded enemy meshes. Zap! Demo is so cool it might be worth mentioning as well, since you play in the same rooms are the full retail players.

Yeah, this was a lot of fun, but I got a crash when asking the wizard to attack something.

I actually tried doing this, and ironically this was my first game. I wanted to do a pseudo interview with the lead designer but it fall through and eventually everything just died. Maybe I"ll kick it up again.

errr...do you mean System Shock 2 is available as a free download, or just the meshes?

Just the meshes, I assume they're talking about. ;)
Still, I strongly support making free game notifications a regular feature - or even quality shareware/indie stuff. The "Download This!" column over at GameSpy has led me to lots of good stuff, and we can always use more free games to play.
For my contribution, if any of you haven't played N (http://www.harveycartel.org/metanet/n.html) yet, go download it. You'll thank me. :D

Yes, free games can be hard to find, I go searching for them a lot as well. It would be good if the authours could inform our sites about them, that way we wouldn't need to dig around.

System Shock 2 is free.
I got it fromm the The Underdogs last year, though their site is undergoing a revamp.

Heres another link, but looks like you have to pay bandwidth.

The meshes are free, and they are a great upgrade.
I don't remember where I got them from but you should be able to find it pretty easily.

But wait, what if you are unlucky enough to have never played the game in the first place, or absent enough to have lost it? Well the good news is that you can download SS2 without breaking any laws. This is about the only positive thing to come from the demise of the sorely missed Looking Glass development house, as the rights to the game are in limbo. So you can head over to that fine repository of abandonware games, the underdogs, and get yourself a copy. Here's the link, and another to a fix for XP/2000 users: www.brave.net.nz/shock2_xp_2000_fix.zip

The System Shock 2 Texture Upgrade Project (aka "SHTUP", pronounced "shtoop").
http://shtup.home.att.net/downloads/shtup_alpha002.zip
The full scope of SHTUP is as follows:
1. Upgrade the resolution of as many object textures as possible.
2. Spruce up terrain textures where possible.
3. Fix any existing errors in graphics (typos, palette errors, map errors, etc).
