Strategy Informer (http://www.strategyinformer.com/) has posted up a new game called Wormux, which is a clone of the popular Worms series by Team-17. This is a free download project which is being worked on by a group of fans. Here's the introduction:

Almost everyone has heard of the Worms(R) series of games, developed by Team17. Worms was created in 1990, the goal of the game consisting of a several teams of "worms" fighting to the death on a 2D map. Wormux is heavily influenced by all games in this genre, including Scorched Earth and Liero.

Wormux is free software clone of this game concept. Though currently under heavy development, it is already very playable, with lots of weapons (Dynamite, Baseball Bat, Teleportation, etc.). There are also lots of maps available for your battling pleasure! Wormux takes the genre to the next level, with great customisation options leading to great gameplay. There is a wide selection of teams, from the Aliens to the Chickens. Also, new battlefields can be downloaded from the Internet, making strategy an important part of each battle.

Awesome. I miss the good old 2D Worms games. I think I blew my whole first year of university having Worms 2 parties with my housemates.

I rented it. It's classic 2D Worms on the DS, but it is ridiculously slow and I just found the screen far to small to do anything accurately. I'm sure it would be worth picking up if you found it really cheap, but, and it pains me to say this, I'd give it a pass.

I didn't try any hotseat matches though, and that might have been fun. If it had WFC capabilities it would have been awesome, but for matches against the computer it took way too long for the CPU to do anything.

Blah, knew it was too good to be true.

A waste of my money.
Far Less weapons, including a lack of a jackhammer
Flickery top screen at times.
Some screwed up anmations, when you fire the uzi the 3 frames it shows are, worm holding uzi, worm half way in ground, no worm.
And terrible ai that can do 1 of 5 things

stand still until end of turn, fire at own feet
stand still until end of turn, fire at friend
stand still until end of turn, teleport high above previous position, fall down.
stand still until end of turn, jump into water.
stand still until end of turn, make an amazing shot at the player.

It shouldnt be legal to sell such a low quality hunk of crap.
Nintendo seems to have pretty low standards, anyone played the ds king kong or ds marvel nemisis: rise of the imperfects?

That's why you don't play ports on the DS. I stick to the original titles.

I have to wonder what advantages this offers me over say, a nice classic game of Worms Armageddon. Hopefully, as it seems, the ability to make my own maps. Random maps are great, but it's nice to make your own. The official website is here (http://www.wormux.org/wiki/en/index.php), by the way. Info on making your own, here (http://www.wormux.org/wiki/Create_your_own_map.php).

Oh, and Worms DS really is as awful as said.

BTW, the DS version of Worms was not developed by Team17. That was outsourced. The new 2D Worms on the PSP WAS developed by Team17, and is quite good.
