Pro-G (http://www.pro-g.co.uk) has posted a review of Rogue Trooper (http://www.pro-g.co.uk/ps2/rogue_trooper/review.html), Rebellion's third-person shooter based on the comic of the same name.

It's amazing when you sit down with a game that you had the lowest of expectations for, only to find an incredibly well put together experience. It certainly doesn't happen that often, but Rogue Trooper from Eidos and Rebellion is one of the most impressive third-person shooters in recent memory.

The only sub-par game I've known to come out of Rebellion has been Judge Dredd: Dredd Vs Death.

Cool. This might very well be a reason to dust off the ol' gen 1 box.

I love Rogue Trooper.

Wow. I expected this to suck. Awesome! I'm more of a Dredd fan myself - exactly how bad was Rebellion's Dredd vs Death?

It was okay, just really early 90s, and the megacity's empty in the game vs packed to the brim which is how it's suppose to be.

Wow, the review extols the game through the roof and ends up giving it just an 8! Granted 8 is still a great score but the review makes you think of the game as somthing a bit more

The entire G.I. battalion is wiped out - all except one. As the 'Rouge Trooper' you set off to bring the traitor to justice.

LOL !

I agree, it was kinda fun, but pretty crap really. I never played gunlok, and I loved AVP even though it was missing a storyline.

The first thing you will notice are the terrible graphics. I have seen better textures and models on early 3rd party PS2 games. No physics, very basic lighting and particle effects and poor to average cut scene animation. (gameplay actually looks a bit better than the cut scenes) At one point the game introduces a female character and while having the obligatory huge breasts, the animation made me think that these guys have never actually seen a women outside of a comic book. The controls, while solid do feel just a tiny bit sluggish. The sound is completely average, nothing bad enough to break the immersion but nothing you would remember 30sec after turning off the game.

Voice acting is average, the story seems above par for a shooter and well put together, the gameplay itself is pretty fun, basic but solid. As you progress through the game you get "chips" which store the personalities and abilities of your comrades. After the scripted deaths of certain allies you remove their "chips" to place them in pre-determined slots on your equipment giving you new abilities. Another intersting feature is, Instead of collecting ammo and med packs etc.. you collect salvage which is then used to make and upgrade items/ammo.

If this game used a more advanced engine, not necessarily next gen but final gen Xbox/PS2 quality it would have made a huge difference and could have elevated this game from average to great. It kind of reminds me of a what in my opinion a very basic, oldschool Gears of War would be like. Using cover, suppression fire etc..etc.. it really is a shame about the graphics.

Graphics 4/10
Sound 6/10
Gameplay 8/10
Funfactor 8/10

Even at $29.99 it seems a bit expensive but if you can find it for $19.99 and feel like playing a solid action game and don't care about graphics it is well worth it.

Having been a fan of the Rogue strip in 2000AD since the Prog when he 1st appeared, I eagerly awaited the release of this game. (In fact I still have the majority of the Rogue Trooper series somewhere in a box...)

I was expecting another shoot-em-up by Eidos/Rebellion - imagine my surprise when from the getgo I got immersed into the whole Rogue storyline again.

I have read many sci-fi comics and books and have been an avid gamer for years (mostly strategy - although have started to play action type games recently) - I must honestly say that this IS THE BEST interpretation of a comic I have ever come across.

The game immerses you in the Rogue storyline without compromising the original strip. Gameplay is good, graphics excellent, controls easy to learn - it's just a slick, polished product overall. Although I don't believe any game could get a 10 rating this one definately gets a 9 from me.

Having said that - I do believe that 1st person shoot-em-up freaks WILL find fault with the game if evaluated purely as a shooter.

If you are / were however a 2000AD & Rogue Trooper fan I would strongly suggest that you get this one! For me it was more of a trip down Rogue Trooper memory lane than analysing the gameplay etc..

Can't wait for the movie....
