Multiplayer in first-person shooters isn't confined to infantry combat anymore, as more and more games incorporate vehicles into the action. This can have a dramatic impact on the gameplay, as you now have grunts, tanks, and aircraft thrown together into the fray. Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is such a game, and this upcoming online shooter from Activision and developer Splash Damage will take the mythos of the Quake universe into a whole new territory. In Quake Wars, the Global Defense Force defends Earth from the alien race known as the Strogg.
I've never been a huge fan of the Quake franchise, but on the other hand I have enjoyed Wolfeinstein: Enemy Territory since its release (and I still play it) and I'm really looking forward to this game.

LOL
I never thought I'd see something like that on Evil Avatar.
Once upon a time, you'd have been run out of town by villagers brandishing pitchforks and torches. :D

I was a HUGE fan of Quake 1, but the rest of the games have gotten progressively worse in my opinion. I really liked that whole medieval/industrial/steampunk/space asthetic in the first one though.

I wish this was getting released sometime during the summer rather than fall. Hopefully, they will follow the trend of past quake games and release a multi-player test/demo.

This was not much of a preview.. actually it wasn't much of anything. But it did provide more concrete info then anyone else. Which I guess says really how little we know about this game. For instance, the wording of the preview seemed to suggest that there would be a singleplayer component. Really I've been thinking of this game as a purely online beast. Essentially an alternative to Battlefield. I suppose it still might since battlefield 'technically' had a singleplayer.
What I didn't see in this preview was any information on powerful vehicles.. All three vehicles seemed to have serious drawbacks, or were underpowered.

That's actually a draw for me. As much as I like whoring vehicles in Battlefield, I'm ready for a more balanced infantry, where vehicles require a lot of skill and luck to stay alive.
I do see this stealing BF 2142's thunder, which seems really generic by comparison.

I have to agree with bone, im glad its only 3 vehicles, and toned down capabilities at that. BF2 vehicles have just minimalized infantry combat, and, with ET's past emphasis on useful, class based gameplay, im hoping they are doing everything they can to keep the fun fast paced, and on the ground.

QW looks better and better, I cant wait. About vehicles though... Id be totally fine with them in any game like this, if it wasnt nearly impossible to take them out like in BF2. I should be able to take a tank out with one missle, or at least disable it, so what do you think that means for a humvee... Combat without vehicles is what should be the main focus though no matter what.

I think tribes (1&2) had the best vehicle balance out there. BF2 is frustrating at times but the vehicles are completely vulnerable. Now the planes/choppers on the other hand...

Bleh combat without vehicles is just deathmatch. Or maybe team based deathmatch. Vehicles add strategy other then twitch gameplay.
I agree that vehicles in battlefield 2 are overpowered, but theres a balance line in there somewhere between taking out a heavily armored large target like a tank with a single missle and being virtually invulnerable to any 3 or 4 soldiers attacking you ala Battlefield 2.
Additionally we know that these are not the only vehicles in the game. On the human side we've seen a tank and an APC I believe.
If your in a vehicle you should have more firepower and armor then any foot soldier. But there should be more ways to get taken out. Perhaps some sort of base defense that once manned is really good at taking out vehicles but not so good at taking out people.

I think it would make for an interesting twist infantry could overwhelm the vehicle and dethrone the driver if they can slow him down enough. I mean, can't a game let me outfit myself with an arc welder to pop the hatch on that tank?

Then...why can't the tank (esp a future tank) electrify it's outer body and just fry you?

What? There isn't more vehicles in the game for the GDF? I thought this was a GDF Preview PART 1. :(
Oh well I was expecting more but hey this game still has me begging for it to be release tomorrow. I don't mind a few vehicles to get you to the battlefield which are mainly infantry based :)

Simple: Energy costs. In the future during the Strogg invasion gas is $22.99/gallon.

I'm sorry, but that's virtually the whole point of a FPS. One of the skillsets required to play this genre is hand-eye coordination ('twitch'). It's like bitching about basketbal requiring athletic ability. Jesus...if you want a game for physical retards go play a turn based game were you can munch on your fritos inbetween turns.
God, what's next, after dumbing down the twitch ability let's dumb down the strategy aspect and just call the genre Everybody Wins: Multiplayer Edition.

What it is even better was that look and feel wasnt by design...its a result of id's total lack of internal organization and direction. Read Masters of Doom.

Frankly, if I don't feel the fluid control from this game that I do when I play RTCW:ET, they can have it back. I'd play it without vehicles. Who needs them? Did TFC have any damn vehicles? Huh?

People here speak about BF/BF2 as if they are the only games with vehicles. UT2k4 had good vehicle/infantry balance. You had 1 gun that could kill all vehicles in 2 shots, some in 1, and it had homing capabilities.
I never played much BF since it requires too much coordination to have a good time. I did play a ton of UT2k4 for a while though.
I did play RTCW:ET for a month or two, I thought it was pretty damn awesome, especially considering the price. I'm really looking forward to Splash Damage's efforts in QW.

Is there actually a game focussed on infantry combat? Most shooters I can think of are more based on squad combat. I'd love an massive Infantry combat game, and no, I don't mean like Joint Operations, I mean a Stalingrad simulation with 150 people a side. That would be fantastic.

And don't get me started on the price of bananas. Stupid Stroggs raising the price of fruit and petrol.
