View Full Version : Weekend Gamer - What are you playing?

This is a weekend I have been looking forward to. I don't know why because I probably have little time to play. But, if I do, I will be playing Oblivion. WoW? CoH? What are those? It is Oblivion, all Oblivion all the time. Once I decided that the main quest did not have to be done right away (that there was no urgency), I have enjoyed myself immensely. I have a few complaints, but they didn't make this game just for me, and the complaints are minor. The crashes are getting annoying, but when they send a patch up (instead of Horse armor), then hopefully that will take care of it. Where is a good place to get mods is my next question. And, what are you playing this weekend? If not Oblivion, then what?

Tetris DS, Brain Age, Oblivion, Top Spin, Rumble Rose XX and Dreamfall.

I will be trying to get promoted to Don in Godfather for the PC.

When I'm not being pisan I will be old school with Lunar Silver star story complete.

Going to try to hit up the new Tomb Raider. But i'll be mostly working on a side web project which I'm starting to regretting signing onto...just using up too much of my free time.

SW:EAW and GalCiv 2. I'm on a space kick. I breezed through Oblivion in like 3 days, doing most of the sidequests. All in all, I was pretty disappointed. The story bores me to tears, the AI is pretty lame, and all I got was the feeling of sameness. Awesome graphics, though. But graphics don't make the game, especially not an RPG. I'm depressed to know that they're going to be making Fallout 3. Why does the combat in oblivion feel so weak? So uninspiring.

Just bought GRAW so I'll be giving that a spin.
Also, last night I beat Bark at the Moon on Expert!

Condemned on the PC and Tomb Raider, with a smattering of Metroid on the DS on the side.

Oh, and let's not forget the saturday night visit to KK Slider.

I've got to chime in on the Oblivion thing... the level scaling 100% broke the game for me, makes me rather dislike the entire thing. That, and having played EQ 1 for 5 years, I can see a boring stupid quest hiding under any number of layers of fluff, and Oblivion just seemed to have a boatload of really... boring stupid quests. Go point a to point b, find item c, return it, or kill person d, the end... There's no challenge in the original game thanks to everything scaling to just below your skill, and if you up the difficulty slider, it becomes a game of just beating a dead horse for even longer periods of time, but still easy. Downloading a plethora of mods fixed all the balance issues, and left the vapid and cookie-cutter-cloned game world intact... just no compelling pull.

Condemned was treating me fairly well yesterday, though... didn't know it was a hobo beating simulator, and it feels like they're kind of trying all the same tricks as F.E.A.R. without breaking out too much, but we'll see. At least it's got some story progression in it... and more than 5 voice actors. ;)

Probably the homework and upcoming finals week-game, hopefully interspersed with Oblivion. Damn, 30 hours in and only level 6.

I'm getting really overpowered for my level, because I went with the warrior class then decided I really liked magic. I'm finding fights with weapons tough, but I can always back off and let rip a few fireballs :D

Oblivion for me too, I hope to go over 70hrs on my third character :D

Maybe I will start some shrine quest, the Azure star sounds interesting.

Oblivion on my PC, a bunch of games on my 360, a few minutes of Minish Cap or Animal Crossing on my DS, and maybe some GC/PS2 games. Those two consoles look at me like sad, negelected, dusty puppies.

Lord Dong - I had the same annoyance until I discovered this:

Since you only level up based on your major skills, pick major skills you hardly ever use (or not at all). So, Armorer, Hand to Hand, Alchemy, etc. for major skills. Then pick your minor skills as the ones you are going to level as your character. That way, you only "level up" when YOU want to, and meanwhile your skills make you more powerful as per a normal RPG.

I'm Grand Champion of the Arena, Arch-Mage of the Mage guild, and almost Master of the Fighters guild and I just went to 5th level.

Having invested 400+ hours into a morrowind mod... If I want to break Oblivion, all I gotta do is open the TES editor. ;)

Currently running a mod that you only level up after 5 skill gains in one of the following: blunt, blade, destruction, restoration, marksman... um.... and a few other combat related. So level is now an expression of combat level. While that balances that aspect of the game, I'm still having trouble getting past the leveled list issues and the lack of real original content in dungeons and shrines. I find myself walking right by Ayleid ruins, caves, and towers, because I'm 99% sure I already know what I'll find inside...

Nothing exciting.

That saddens me.

Hopefully for me I will be clearing up for the second time the first Oblivion gate to rescue that stupid Martin ( I had to start the game again cuz I read some interesting things about making the character more useful for skill that I couldn't use just because was not major e.c.t)

Just go to www.GameFaqs.com and look for a strategy or character creation and you will see and know what I'm trying to tell you guys ;) .

I must say play Tetris DS multiplayer is quite cool.

Also played Hunters briefly, interesting control scheme. But unless I am missing something it's nearly impossible to play for more than 20 minute spurts due to all the support being forced on your non-stylus hand.

A good place for Oblivion (and Morrowind) mods is http://tessource.net/ or the official Oblivion Mods forum at elderscrolls.com.

There are literally thousands of Oblivion mods out already, so happy browsing!

This weekend I'll likely play Oblivion, Guitar Hero (still) and my handhelds (maybe Tetris DS and I'm thinking about picking up a PSP game... not sure which yet).

Between bouts of Animal Crossing and Brain Age I'll try to slip in some Super Princess Peach, and maybe beat Aria of Sorrow.

Also playing Suikoden V with the hubby...well, more like watching him play while I cuddle with him. I'm one of the few people (that I've seen anyway) that actually enjoys watching people play games.

I hear you. I like the way I play because whenever I want to level, I just quickly get 10 points among my "major" skills and bingo, new monsters new treasure - but on MY schedule, not the game's.

Auto Assault on a trial for one (It's actually much better so far than I remember in beta, Innnteresting.)

City of Villians for a bit, (When oh when will Issue 7 finally come forth?)

And some Okami. (Japanese import, I understand 20% of the game's japanese, but its preeeety.)

Maybe I should write up an impressions post about Okami?

I hear that. Met a new woman last Friday, haven't had a chance to game since. Hmm, I did get a bit of DS gaming in on the subway to/from work. I looked at my pc last night, there was a layer of dust on the display. Talk about a wake-up call.

A few days ago I would have said Dreamfall would be on the menu. But the story grabbed me by the balls. Now 17 hours later I just finished it. Golly what a game. Stupid combat, and stealth, but fantastic story. I won't say more then that less it spoils it for anyone.

So I guess its back to oblivion and WoW for me. Somehow that prospect feels very muted after the ride I was just put through. So yeah.. if your on the fence about dreamfall, I say its a buy.

I guess it is sad that I have skipped going into dungeons because of the sameness for a lot of them in the beginning. Exploring the world and finding them has been a lot of fun. Though I did find two dungeons I hadn't seen before. I just hate that they restock after you have cleared them out. Hard to keep track of where you have been. Biggest complaint is that it seems to be a port from a console to a PC. They don't take advantage of things that the PC can do. The scaling for monsters can be annoying at times (sometimes you just want to go somewhere and kick some serious...) Despite all that, I am enjoying it. I am level 25 and have only done one main Oblivion quest so far.

My friend has borrowed my ps2 for a while so I'm stuck with the gamecube. However, I still have a few unplayed gc games in the queue. So I'm finishing Pikmin 2. I enjoyed it, but I think I liked the first better. Afterwards, I'll probably start Eternal Darkness. This game came with my gc and I still haven't played it.

I'm doing the work thing this weekend, which means I'll probably get a lot of DS play.

Gamewise: Brain Age, MP: Hunters, AC:WW, maybe some FFIV: Advance or Castlevania DS.

I'm almost finished KH2 (according to my brother) so I'll hopefully wrap that up over the weekend.

And on the PC I'll try to get some more Oblivion time in (I've only managed to play about 14-15 hours so far... I hate you people and your lack of non-gaming commitments! You remind me of the life I once had!) and I might fire up FEAR or Far Cry or Dawn Of War... but Oblivion will likely get my attention this weekend if I get time to play on the PC. Although I'm also trying to learn CSS and XHTML stuff, so that might factor into my weekend a bit.

Oh, and I'll be going to see Silent Hill tomorrow evening. I can't wait.

Hopefully going to finish up Kingdom Hearts 1 this weekend, but we'll see. Fighting Oogie Boogie currently, so I'm getting down to the wire I think. Have Neverland left and maybe one other....

Broke down and also picked up Alien Hominid for the PS2. Game is an absolute blast, but it's wicked cheap in many places. Gameplay is similar to Metal Slug with more of a 'flash' look to it, but whereas you could make it through Metal Slug without dying (theoretically), Alien Hominid forces you to die in a couple of places which just doesn't make any sense. Perhaps it's to lengthen an otherwise short gameplay experience. Got the game for 10 bucks though, so no complaints there.

Finishing up Suikoden V, then going to beat Tomb Raider (heard it's short), and then maybe work on the career mode of Top Spin 2.

Wolfgang - If you haven't played Fight Night, do so. It is one of the funnest games I've played in ages. . . though you'll be sick of it after you beat career mode. . . well, I was anyway. Good game mechancis, but it's the same great game mechanics. I would have kept it and played it again when I was less tired of it, but the ads in the game are so obnoxious that I chose to not buy it on principle.

I freakin love alien hominid. I was all about Metal Slug too, (except Metal slug 3 on Xbox, with its retarted continue system), but I love the crazy style and humour in Alien Hominid, just a real blast to play. Plus, I like that the developers were independant.

As for what I will be playing, I work on saturday, the rest of the time will be used to catch up on some Oblivion (finish off the Thieves guild Quests), Tomb Raider Legend (Finish up the game and start on the trials).

I also picked up Samurai Champloo for Ps2, so I will hopefully find some time for that. Its really hard to sit down and play any game that doesn't have achievement points... I guess after I get all the achivements in the 360 games I have, then I can move on to my huge backlog of games I haven't played/finished.
