Limbo Review

Jack be nimble, Jack be quick... Jack get impaled by a stick.

The tagline is “Uncertain of his Sister's Fate, a Boy enters LIMBO”, and that’s pretty much the only thing I can tell you about the story. There’s a very light touch narrative told through gameplay, but nothing that’s overt. Limbo is more about the experience instead of trying to tell a story.

Presented as a black and white 2D platformer with many shades of grey, you control the boy in fairly typical platforming controls. You’ve got a jump button, an action button and analog movement, all of which are used to continue your journey moving left to right in a very dire world.

Along your path you’ll often encounter puzzles that vary in their difficulty, starting off simple and becoming more complex, but there was only one point where I really got stuck and had a tough time figuring out what needed to be done. I’m not saying that Limbo is an easy title, but it’s certainly not something that will give puzzle veterans much of a challenge. I’d go into some explanation of cooler puzzles, but that would be ruining the one mechanic this game has. Suffice it to say, there’s a handful of clever devices interspersed with the fairly standard and I honestly hoped for more out of them.

The biggest strength that Limbo brings to the table is its presentation. Every foreground object and character are silhouettes while the rest of the non-interactive world is contained within a misty embrace and is mildly out of focus. Character animation is handled wonderfully and the attention to detail is pretty staggering. Sliding down a slope will produce small pebbles along your feet, ropes will flop around realistically, and when you get dismembered by a saw blade, your body parts really do come apart quite well.

Sound design is also in step with the graphical. Generally, there is no musical score except during key moments. Instead, Playdead opted to focus on the sounds that objects and beings within the world create. While a fairly quiet and subdued game, it makes things like the aforementioned saw blade that more menacing. The combination of relatively featureless characters with sparse audio cues creates a unique, albeit bleak game world.

Once you finish the game, there’s really nothing left to go back for unless you’re into getting all the achievements. In one playthrough, I was awarded with a single achievement, but if you’re a masochist there’s one in there that asks you to finish the game in one sitting, dying fewer than five times as well as several others that are fairly cryptic in their descriptions.

Limbo is a solid and atmospheric puzzle platformer that is a bit light on difficulty and replay value. Despite my adoration for the fluid character movements and minimalist design, I came away feeling like I wanted more. It’s a good way to spend an evening, but don’t go in expecting a Braid-esque experience.

Score: 3.5 out of 5

The Good Great hopeless and somber-filled atmosphere. Character animations are top notch.
The Bad A very brief experience. Puzzle veterans will have little trouble overcoming the obstacles.
The Ugly Saw blades.

So bought.

and I like DTOID's last line:

"I'm not going to tell you to buy it. I'm going to ask you to buy it."

I hate Braid; this is a feeling that has slowly stewed since it was released. I wanted to like...but something about it just pisses me off.
If Limbo isn't Braid-esque, I'm sold.

I'm clearly in the minority with my score, but I'm not quite sure why.

I'm a jaded gamer who dislikes the "indie" title as much as the "social networking" title. Indie games are founded on gimicks that don't advance games very far and the gameplay they offer isn't worth much after the first playthrough. The game looks great. Semms like the game just plays okay.

You are in the minority with your score probably because mony blogs Read: joystiq, kotaku, destructoid etc. Take anything that calls itself "indie" and pukes hearts, stars and gloworms on it until people buy it.

I trust your reviews before any of those "games journalizm websites" above.

@modeps - Because it's cooler to get crazy with the hyperbole when it comes to these games.

It's strange. I think I trust/respect most "Red" peoples opinions here. Weird. Take Evil Avatar for example. We played Red Dead Redemption with a few EvAv'ers and formed a posse. He asked me to look at his horse. And I did. I thought it was amazing. He sunsqeuently asked me to give it a lick. I swear it tasted like rasins. Johan's pretty spot on/jaded too.

I haven't played the game yet, but I don't understand how just one look at this game doesn't advance "games/genre".

All these "AAA" games are sold on cramming an experience down your throat in a relentless pursuit of "mature storytelling" that completely misses the point of storytelling in general.

Hopefully the minimalist direction of this game will help to point the focus on what really matters in conveying a story and not all the ridiculous fluff that developers think it needs to have.

"We need to have an expanded universe like Star Wars! We need to have an extensive lore like The Lord of The Rings! We need to have an open world like GTA! We need to have good and evil choices like KOTOR! We need to have lots of cutscenes like Metal Gear Solid! That's how you tell a good story!"

...or you can just have a boy, a little danger, a little drama, and a nugget of truth.

Thanks for that, but sometimes I get enamored as much as them. I absolutely loved Braid for everything it had to offer and that was as indie as this one, but this time after I played I felt just about nothing other than "Hey, I liked that art style." Some other sites are saying that it 'stuck with them' long after they finished, but I totally didn't get that feeling. Maybe I expected too much.

Controls are just fine. No problems with them at all. They're simple, intuitive, and responsive.

I like the ridiculous fluff called gameplay.

I do too. Above all else. But games need story, and developers currently are sacrificing everyhting including gameplay as slaves to the pursuit of "story" which really means overcooked narrative.

I don't care if the game is a bit short--I love stylish puzzle platformers like this, and I have 1200 MSP sitting in my account right now just waiting till Wednesday for this to drop.

Love the visual style.

I keep wondering if just a "little" color might not improve the look. Enough color to be very subtle, enough that people might still think it was B&W without realizing it.

Do want ;)

Games like this, when successful, lead to talent rise in the industry, and similar future games. This game may be short, but, if successful, the creators can get a publisher for a more substantial effort.

Is the gameplay worth it? Dunno. But the guy responsible for visual style has a career :P

I'm enjoying it a great deal... for the price, I'd recommend grabbing now, playing in a dark room, and just enjoy for what it is. But hey - that's just one opinion! :)

To be fair, modeps once said that Earthworm Jim was "mostly style over substance", so I don't know how much credibility he really has when it comes to rating platform games. :p

Four hours of gameplay I would say should be more along the lines of a 10 dollar game. I have played plenty of download only games that were a lot longer with more re-playability for ten. Just because this game is an indie darling doesn't mean it should price higher. But maybe thats just me.

Eh, I loved Portal for the 6 or so hours I played it, never went back and played it again after my first run through, and still thought it was easily worth $15. I'll give this a shot as well. Even if it's only 4 hours, if it's good fun for that time, that's still good entertainment value per dollar.

I'm more of a quality over quantity guy - for what it's worth, I find the value for what the game delivers to be just fine. But everyone has their own line...
